Masters of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Edwin Watts Chubb Pdf

Excerpt from Masters of English Literature An Introductory chapter is included so as to present a very brief survey of the whole field of English literature At the end of each chapter there is a list of books and magazine articles. It is hoped that these reference lists will be especially helpful to those who wish to make a fuller study of the author. Instead of inserting separate chapters on the literary movements and tendencies of the age, I have included such matter in the body of the biographical and critical comment on each author. The Masters of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Stephen Gwynn Pdf

Excerpt from The Masters of English Literature Some explanation is needed to account for the appearance of this book, in a period which sets so much value on specialised study. The writer would justify it by the view, first, that in English literature there are certain authors who may be classed as obligatory - concerning whom total ignorance is a defect at least to be concealed; and secondly, that the ordinary reader has neither the time nor inclination to study all these authors at first hand. An attempt has therefore been made to put together a survey of the literature which should concern itself only with such authors as can be deemed in this manner essential; with the hope that it might usefully supplement the necessarily partial knowledge possessed by young or busy people, and perhaps serve as a guide to those who wish to extend their reading. The main criterion which has regulated the selection of names is public fame. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Course of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by James Hannay Pdf

Excerpt from A Course of English LiteratureThe present book is based upon a series of papers contributed some years ago to a popular periodical. It is intended for the use, not of schools only, but of that large and increasing class of young men in our great cities, who desire to be guided to the acquirement of a respectable knowledge of our national literature. I believe that there is sufficient novelty in its plan and execution to entitle it to a fair trial; and I am not without hopes that it may help to keep alive that interest in the great masters of the past, which cannot perish without injury.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Masters of Victorian Literature by Richard D. Graham Pdf

Excerpt from The Masters of Victorian Literature: 1837-1897 The following pages have been written chiefly for the younger students of English Literature. Existing works on this subject usually st0p at the threshold of our own time, but the interest of young students, so far from ending there, is strongly attracted towards the authors of to-day. To gratify their natural curiosity, and especially to foster in them a taste for what is beautiful, and of permanent value in the literature of the Victorian era, is the aim which the author has had in view. No scheme of ex amination has been present to his thoughts in writing. At the same time he has made ample use of facts, and even of dates, in connection with the per sonal element in the literature of the period, and has sought to show into what setting of circumstances in the life-history of the writer himself, the works of his genius are to be fitted. The Scandi navian lands, Germany, Italy, England and Spain, all have felt the leadership of France in this regard and hence any attempt to sketch the history of the Novel on English soil, would ignore causes, that did not acknowledge the Gallic debt. Masters of Literature, De Quincey (Classic Reprint) by Thomas de Quincey Pdf

Excerpt from Masters of Literature, De Quincey De Quincey's active life synchronized with the period when the English and Scottish literary periodicals were at the apogee of their influence and success. They sup plied the public with a great deal both of its serious, and its lighter, reading; they were powerful, wealthy, and important, and their circulation was, for their time, large; they were conducted by enterprising publishers or keen men of business who, in their ardent rivalry with one another, were eager to draw the ablest pens of Britain into their service. A monthly or quarterly press which had among its contributors such writers as Coleridge, Keats, Landor, Sir William Hamilton, Christopher North, Lockhart, Hood, Lamb, Hazlitt, Jeffrey, John Stuart Mill, Carlyle, and Macaulay, had some reason to think well of itself. Excerpt from History of English Literature This work has a twofold purpose. It seeks, in gen eral, to promote an historical understanding of Eng lish literature; and at the same time to extend this to wider circles. Regard for these wider circles, whose interest I hope to gain in a subject certainly not unworthy of it, has excluded from my book much that will be missed by the student, and even some things which will be regretted by the master. First Steps in English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Arthur Gilman Pdf

Excerpt from First Steps in English Literature In laying out his work the author first discussed the general divisions of the subject, and found that but two needed to be indicated. These, in turn, fell naturally into four subdivisions each, and thus he had a plan of the simplest description, without resorting to any questionable system of nomencla ture, or attempting to mark out divisions where none actually exist. In casting about for names for the divisions thus indicated, the author found the work already done, and it was only necessary for him to adopt those that had stood the test of use, and were supported by the suffrages of schol ars who were acknowledged masters of the sub ject. The Great Masters of Russian Literature in the Nineteenth Century (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Dupuy Pdf

Excerpt from The Great Masters of Russian Literature in the Nineteenth Century But these trivialities, dressed in graceful idioms, are simply charming. To touch them, to analyze them, is like touching a soap-bubble. Fortunately, M. Dupuy has also all the Gallic acuteness and cleverness bf illus tration and, in spite of occasional glittering, illusive triteness, there is a solid basis of value, which remains even when the scintillations are dulled, when the iri descence is obscured by the veil of translation. His skill in giving the gist of a book is thoroughly characteristic and that, it is to be hoped, shines through the English. A History of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Robert Huntington Fletcher Pdf

Excerpt from A History of English Literature This book aims to provide a general manual of English Literature for students in colleges and universities and others beyond the high-school age. The first purposes of every such book must be to outline the development of the literature with due regard to national life, and to give appreciative interpretation of the work of the most im portant authors. I have written the present volume be cause I have found no other that, to my mind, combines satisfactory accomplishment of these ends with a selec tion of authors sufficiently limited for clearness and with adequate accuracy and fulness of details, biographical and other. A manual, it seems to me, should supply a sys tematic statement of the important facts, so that the greater part of the student's time, in class and without, may be left free for the study of the literature itself. I hope that the book may prove adaptable to various methods and conditions of work. Experience has suggested the brief introductory statement of main literary prin ciples, too often taken for granted by teachers, with much resulting haziness in the student's mind. The list of as signments and questions at the end is intended, of course, to be freely treated. I hope that the list of available inexpensive editions of the chief authors may suggest a practical method of providing the material, especially for colleges which can provide enough copies for class use. Poets, of course, may be satisfactorily read in volumes of selections; but to me, at least, a book of brief extracts from twenty or a hundred prose authors is an absurdity. Perhaps I may venture to add that personally I find it ad visable to pass hastily over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and so gain as much time as possible for the nineteenth. The Dialogue in English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Elizabeth Merrill Pdf

Excerpt from The Dialogue in English Literature The general history of the dialogue has been set forth in Hirzel's Der Dialog, ein Literarhistorischer Versuch (Leipsic, 1895), which includes, in addition to a full account of classic dialogues, some brief mention of those in modern literatures. This book has furnished the starting-point for the following discussion, which aims to deal, rather inclusively, with the varieties of dialogue in our literature, as well as to give an account of the English dialogues that are most typical, or of the greatest value artistically. I have grouped these dialogues in certain general classes, after setting aside for separate treatment the mediaeval period and the nineteenth century; for, though the classes do indeed overlap, such a grouping reveals some important tendencies. A few translations that have come to form part of English literature, or have closely affected its development, appear in the course of the discussion, but only a few out of many. The following pages may perhaps suggest that, though English literature has produced no dialogues of such permanent beauty and importance as those which have come to us from the Greeks, and though English dialogues, in general, have been far less dramatic and far more expository in tone than the best of those in classic literature, they have been more numerous and of greater interest than is generally realized.
