Geometry of Moduli Spaces and Representation Theory by Roman Bezrukavnikov,Alexander Braverman,Zhiwei Yun Pdf

This book is based on lectures given at the Graduate Summer School of the 2015 Park City Mathematics Institute program “Geometry of moduli spaces and representation theory”, and is devoted to several interrelated topics in algebraic geometry, topology of algebraic varieties, and representation theory. Geometric representation theory is a young but fast developing research area at the intersection of these subjects. An early profound achievement was the famous conjecture by Kazhdan–Lusztig about characters of highest weight modules over a complex semi-simple Lie algebra, and its subsequent proof by Beilinson-Bernstein and Brylinski-Kashiwara. Two remarkable features of this proof have inspired much of subsequent development: intricate algebraic data turned out to be encoded in topological invariants of singular geometric spaces, while proving this fact required deep general theorems from algebraic geometry. Another focus of the program was enumerative algebraic geometry. Recent progress showed the role of Lie theoretic structures in problems such as calculation of quantum cohomology, K-theory, etc. Although the motivation and technical background of these constructions is quite different from that of geometric Langlands duality, both theories deal with topological invariants of moduli spaces of maps from a target of complex dimension one. Thus they are at least heuristically related, while several recent works indicate possible strong technical connections. The main goal of this collection of notes is to provide young researchers and experts alike with an introduction to these areas of active research and promote interaction between the two related directions.

Contexts for Learning Mathematics Level 1 Read-Alouds by Catherine Twomey Fosnot Pdf

Building learning around rich, instructionally sound contexts was an overarching goal during the development of the Contexts for Learning Mathematics series. Throughout the series context is used to set the stage for learning. It establishes a terrain that will intrigue children and ignite their imaginations. The contexts are situations children can imagine - either realistic or fictional - that enable them to reflect on what they are doing and apply mathematical thinking to their own world. Contexts for investigations are typically developed with stories and pictures. These are carefully crafted to involve students in meaningful investigations of the big ideas, strategies, and models that shape mathematical thinking. - The images and texts are engaging and include age-appropriate children using mathematics to solve real-world problems. - The numbers referenced represent landmark numbers or number relationships that are significant and telling. - The models and metaphors within a context make relationships and strategies more tangible and explicit. The contexts for the eight units in Investigating Number Sense, Addition, and Subtraction (Grades K - 3) are established through eight engaging read-aloud books (15" x 12") that meld humor, intrigue, and good math sense. Quantum Field Theory and Manifold Invariants by Daniel S. Freed,Sergei Gukov,Ciprian Manolescu,Constantin Teleman,Ulrike Tillmann Pdf

This volume contains lectures from the Graduate Summer School “Quantum Field Theory and Manifold Invariants” held at Park City Mathematics Institute 2019. The lectures span topics in topology, global analysis, and physics, and they range from introductory to cutting edge. Topics treated include mathematical gauge theory (anti-self-dual equations, Seiberg-Witten equations, Higgs bundles), classical and categorified knot invariants (Khovanov homology, Heegaard Floer homology), instanton Floer homology, invertible topological field theory, BPS states and spectral networks. This collection presents a rich blend of geometry and topology, with some theoretical physics thrown in as well, and so provides a snapshot of a vibrant and fast-moving field. Graduate students with basic preparation in topology and geometry can use this volume to learn advanced background material before being brought to the frontiers of current developments. Seasoned researchers will also benefit from the systematic presentation of exciting new advances by leaders in their fields.

Math City by Ahmad Amani Pdf

Monster Number was grossly overweight and had a shaggy body, like a mammoth. In the beginning, Monster Number could not walk very well. Though he swayed a little, tottering and often falling, my father trained him for detecting and killing. After a few days, we attacked Math City. Math City was bombarded, the doors and the walls shaking while the dark shade of the Monster Number came down, covering the city. Monster Number threw big stones, one after another; and like a repulsive ghoul crashed through any barrier. Then, after many horrible explosions, Monster Number entered the city, and we followed him. He smashed countless numbers as he put down his steps on the earth.

Making Math Learning Fun for Inner City School Students by Glendolyn Duhon-Jeanlouis,Alice Duhon-Ross McCallum,Ashraf Esmail Pdf

Making Math Learning Fun for Inner City School Students is an effective tool for educators and a textbook for professors of higher education. The concepts discussed in the book provide a body of knowledge that will enable leaders to understand the critical issues surrounding inner city school students in their ability to learn mathematical concepts. Research shows that three to five teachers of mathematics leave the school system within the first two years of teaching because of frustration experienced while helping inner city school students comprehend and master mathematical skills. Students are often discouraged by inappropriate teaching strategies that favor learning math concepts in isolation, rather than making them relevant to daily life or cultural experiences. Teachers of math must clearly understand inner city school students' learning styles when they are implementing a process for the student to learn. Classroom teachers in the twenty-first century must have valid knowledge of how the brains of inner city school children work. For students to master and comprehend math skills, learning activities must be both fun and relevant to their present body of knowledge about life and living.

X and the City by John A. Adam Pdf

What mathematical modeling uncovers about life in the city X and the City, a book of diverse and accessible math-based topics, uses basic modeling to explore a wide range of entertaining questions about urban life. How do you estimate the number of dental or doctor's offices, gas stations, restaurants, or movie theaters in a city of a given size? How can mathematics be used to maximize traffic flow through tunnels? Can you predict whether a traffic light will stay green long enough for you to cross the intersection? And what is the likelihood that your city will be hit by an asteroid? Every math problem and equation in this book tells a story and examples are explained throughout in an informal and witty style. The level of mathematics ranges from precalculus through calculus to some differential equations, and any reader with knowledge of elementary calculus will be able to follow the materials with ease. There are also some more challenging problems sprinkled in for the more advanced reader. Filled with interesting and unusual observations about how cities work, X and the City shows how mathematics undergirds and plays an important part in the metropolitan landscape.
