Computer Aided Assessment of Mathematics by Chris Sangwin Pdf

Assessment is a key driver in mathematics education. This book examines computer aided assessment (CAA) of mathematics in which computer algebra systems (CAS) are used to establish the mathematical properties of expressions provided by students in response to questions. In order to automate such assessment, the relevant criteria must be encoded and, in articulating precisely the desired criteria, the teacher needs to think very carefully about the goals of the task. Hence CAA acts as a vehicle to examine assessment and mathematics education in detail and from a fresh perspective. One example is how it is natural for busy teachers to set only those questions that can be marked by hand in a straightforward way, even though the constraints of paper-based formats restrict what they do and why. There are other kinds of questions, such as those with non-unique correct answers, or where assessing the properties requires the marker themselves to undertake a significant computation. It is simply not sensible for a person to set these to large groups of students when marking by hand. However, such questions have their place and value in provoking thought and learning. This book, aimed at teachers in both schools and universities, explores how, in certain cases, different question types can be automatically assessed. Case studies of existing systems have been included to illustrate this in a concrete and practical way.

New Trends in Astronomy Teaching by L. Gouguenheim,D. McNally,J. R. Percy Pdf

How do students learn astronomy? How can the World-Wide Web be used to teach? And how do planetariums help with educating the public? These are just some of the timely questions addressed in this stimulating review of new trends in the teaching of astronomy. Based on an international meeting hosted by the University of London and the Open University (IAU Colloquium 162), this volume presents articles by experts from around the world. The proceedings of the first IAU Colloquium (105), The Teaching of Astronomy, edited by Percy and Pasachoff, were first published in 1990 and soon became established as the definitive resource for astronomy teachers. Astronomy education has advanced enormously in the intervening 7 years, and this sequel will inspire and encourage teachers of astronomy at all levels and provide them with wealth of ideas and experience on which to build.

Readings in Innovative Ideas in Teaching Collegiate Mathematics by Mohammad-Hossain Ahmadi Pdf

Professional mathematicians from the US and Britain address practical aspects of innovative ideas in teaching mathematics, but shy away from either theoretical or historical perspectives on any particular pedagogical approaches. They set out the pros and cons of implementing creative instructional styles in order to share their insights with teachers at all educational levels. Mathwise Integers with Answer Key by Peter L. Wise Pdf

MathWise books are different from most math workbooks for students. Math textbooks and workbooks typically have a mini-lecture at the beginning of each lesson, and then have pages of problems. Students often get impatient with the explanations and have difficulty knowing how to proceed to work the problems. The format looks dry and boring, and students lose interest. MathWise Integers teaches integer addition/subtraction through the Same Sign Rule and the Opposite Sign Rule, but also through visual manipulatives: traditional horizontal number lines, elevator-style number lines, and counters. The rules, visual manipulatives, and the problems themselves are designed to strengthen mathematical reasoning. Additional concepts include: substitution with integers, negative one as a sign switcher, integer multiplication/division, fact families with integers, basic inequalities, multiplication with negative fractions, negative numbers with exponents, and absolute value. Concept Quizzes are used throughout to test/review students' conceptual knowledge of integers. MathWise workbooks are unique in that they give interactive instruction as students are working on math problems. Speech bubbles give insights, hints, and observations in measured doses-not all at once, so that students don't lose attention or get overloaded. Answer frames foster good technique-they ensure that students solve problems in steps and show their work. Number sense and sound mathematical thinking are emphasized throughout. In addition to learning the concepts, students develop power with numbers and understand how and why math works the way it does. These books are skill-specific-not grade specific. Challenge problems are sprinkled throughout the books to stretch students' thinking and to help them grow in their problem-solving skills. MathWise books can be used to supplement any curriculum. They can be used for remediation with higher grades, and they can be used for enrichment with lower grades. They can also be used to pre-teach concepts or to review material that was previously presented. Students often say that the MathWise books helped them to really understand the material for the first time. The layout, explanations, tips and tricks, sequence of instruction, and mathematical connections presented in these books all contribute to the success of the curriculum. The material in the MathWise books took over 14 years to create and design. These books have been used, tested, and critiqued in the classroom for over a decade. "

Speech bubbles give insights, hints, and observations in measured doses-not all at once, so that students don't lose attention or get overloaded. Answer frames foster good technique-they ensure that students solve problems in steps and show their work. This is especially important in algebra, because the steps are essential components of the process, yet students want to solve equations mentally. Number sense and sound mathematical thinking are emphasized throughout. In addition to learning the concepts, students develop power with numbers and understand how and why math works the way it does. These books are skill-specific-not grade specific. For a video description of the MathWise series of workbooks click on the "Follow the Author" - Peter L. Wise. MathWise books are specially designed to be unique and effective. Most math textbooks and workbooks have a mini-lecture at the beginning of each lesson, and then have pages of problems. Students often get impatient with the explanations and have difficulty knowing how to proceed to work the problems. The format looks dry and boring, and students lose interest. MathWise books communicate with students as they work through the book. The answer boxes teach good technique, neatness, and organization. Students are guided through the steps in a friendly way, with speech bubbles giving hints and explanations. MathWise books emphasize deeper level understanding of the material-how and why math works the way it does. The key is: "Understand more, memorize less." MathWise books all work together to ensure the development of strong number sense and mathematical thinking. MathWise Linear Equations starts with the basics of graphing and progresses to a wide range of topics, including: Slope Slope-intercept form Solving for intercepts Solving for x- or y-values Finding equations from 2 points Standard-form equations Point Slope equations Linear inequalities Systems of equations SPECIAL FEATURES Tips and Tricks Students have found the tips and tricks to be helpful and memorable, and they have also found that they add interest and excitement to their math studies. Speech Bubbles with Teacher Insights Speech bubbles are used to provide guidance, point out insights, or give helpful hints as students are solving math problems. Students learn best by doing, and the instruction given in the speech bubbles is designed to (1) sharpen students' powers of observation, (2) increase number sense, and (3) instruct in digestible chunks. Simplicity of Instruction Every page (excluding review pages or quizzes) has a specific focus. Most pages have generous amounts of white space to keep students focused. Movement is from the simple to the increasingly complex. Step-By-Step Procedures Students learn best when given explicit, step-by-step instruction. When several steps are involved, the steps are numbered. This makes learning much more logical and memorable. Logical-Sequential Instruction Carefully designed problems are presented in a logical sequence, so that previous answers contribute to students' abilities to solve future problems. The order in which math problems are presented is critical to promoting number sense. This edition comes with an answer key and is reproducible for single-classroom use.
