Matthew Arnold's Sohrab and Rustum by Justus Collins Castleman Pdf

Excerpt from Matthew Arnold's Sohrab and Rustum: And Other Poems; Edited, With Introduction and Notes Matthew Arnolds' poetry is preeminently the work of a scholar and a gentleman, and, as such, has a place in the high school and in the lives of young people. The ethical teachings of his verse, with their unvarying insistence upon the supremacy of conduct and duty, are especially helpful, while the classic nature of his style and manner afford a singular charm and interest. The aim of this little volume, then, is to familiarize, in a measure, the high school student with one of the ablest poetic spirits of the last century and to add one more name to his list of poet acquaintances. The present edition attempts little in the way of criticism, the introduction and notes being intended merely to supply the needs of those students who do not have access to a well-stocked library. Suggestive questions have also been added, which are designed to aid in the appreciation and interpretation of the included poems. The History of Persia, from the Most Early Period to the Present Time by John Malcolm Pdf

Sir John Malcolm (1769-1833) was a British soldier, colonial administrator, diplomat, linguist, and historian. He was born in Scotland, left school at age 12, and, through an uncle, secured a position in the East India Company. While stationed in various parts of India as an officer in the company's military forces, he became interested in foreign languages, which he studied diligently. He became fluent in Persian and, over the years, served as an interpreter and British envoy to Persia in various capacities. In 1815, he published his The History of Persia, From the Most Early Period to the Present Time, which earned him literary fame and an honorary doctorate from Oxford University. In two volumes, the book covers the period from the legendary Pishdadian Dynasty to the early 19th century. Malcolm drew on both written sources and his own extensive experiences in India and Persia. Volume 2 is particularly valuable as an account of Persia in the early 1700s, with descriptions of the country's rulers, religions, government, and society. Although Malcolm deeply admired Persian culture and civilization, he believed that the country badly needed political reform, a subject that he addressed in the concluding section of the book. Translated into French in 1821 and German in 1830, The History of Persia was the standard Western work on Persia until the appearance, in 1915, of Percy Molesworth Sykes's A History of Persia.

Through the black Tartar tents he pass'd, which stood Clustering like beehives on the low flat strand Of Oxus, where the summer floods o'erflow 1 Soh'rab. 2 The great river Amu Daria was called the Oxus by the Greeks and Romans, and the Jihun or Amu by the Arabs and Persians. 3 "Tartar '; is the general name applied to many nomadic tribes of southern Russia and central Asia, and particularly to those inhabiting the drainage basin of the Caspian and Aral Seas. 4 Pe'ran-We'sa. The Turanians are the Scythians of the Greek historians. Turan was separated from Iran, or the Persian Empire, by the Oxus. PeranWisa was a Turanian chief, and the commander of King Afrasiab's forces, which included representatives of many Tartar tribes, as indicated in lines "9-134 IS 15 When the sun melts the snows in high Pamere; J Through the black tents he pass'd, o'er that low strand, And to a hillock came, a little back From the stream's brink--the spot where first a boat, Crossing the stream in summer, scrapes the land. 20 The men of former times had crown'd the top With a clay fort; but that was fall'n, and now The Tartars built there Peran-Wisa's tent, A dome of laths, and o'er it felts were spread.
