Medusa's Coil (Annotated) by H. P. Lovecraft,Zealia Bishop Pdf
The drive toward Cape Girardeau had been through unfamiliar country; and as the late afternoon light grew golden and half-dreamlike I realized that I must have directions if I expected to reach the town before night. I did not care to be wandering about these bleak southern Missouri lowlands after dark, for roads were poor and the November cold rather formidable in an open roadster. Black clouds, too, were massing on the horizon; so I looked about among the long, grey and blue shadows that streaked the flat, brownish fields, hoping to glimpse some house where I might get the needed information.

The unnamed narrator of the story is driving to Cape Girardeau, Missouri but gets lost in the unfamiliar country. He comes across a rundown plantation house and finds the only inhabitant is an emaciated old man called Antoine de Russy. The narrator asks if he can spend the night in the house: the old man agrees and begins to tell the tale of the place. He explains that he inherited the estate from his grandfather and married in 1885. He had a son Dennis who, as a young man, was sent to the Sorbonne in Paris. There Dennis met an artist, Frank Marsh from New Orleans, and the two men became involved in a mystical cult. Dennis became infatuated with the head of the cult, a woman called Marceline and married her. Around 1916 Dennis returned to Missouri with his new wife, but Antoine and his servants found her strangely repulsive.

De Russy suffers from spinal neuritis and hasn't been able to keep up the place; he must stay on, however, to guard--something. A storm's coming, so narrator asks Antoine to house him overnight. Antoine's surprised, as locals won't even visit Riverside now. He leads narrator to a sitting room, less shabby than the rest of the house. Our adventurous narrator's wish to plumb the de Russy mysteries is soon satisfied, for Antoine seems eager to tell his story.
