The Next Everest by Jim Davidson Pdf

A dramatic account of the deadly avalanche on Everest—and a return to reach the summit. On April 25, 2015, Jim Davidson was climbing Mount Everest when a 7.8-magnitude earthquake released avalanches all around him and his team, destroying their only escape route and trapping them at nearly 20,000 feet. It was the largest earthquake in Nepal in eighty-one years and killed nearly 8,900 people. That day also became the deadliest in the history of Everest, with eighteen people losing their lives on the mountain. After spending two unsettling days stranded on Everest, Davidson's team was rescued by helicopter. The experience left him shaken, and despite his thirty-three years of climbing and serving as an expedition leader, he wasn’t sure that he would ever go back. But in the face of risk and uncertainty, he returned in 2017 and finally achieved his dream of reaching the summit. Suspenseful and engrossing, The Next Everest portrays the experience of living through the biggest disaster to ever hit the mountain. Davidson's background in geology and environmental science makes him uniquely qualified to explain why the seismic threats lurking beneath Nepal are even greater today. But this story is not about “conquering” the world’s highest peak. Instead, it reveals how embracing change, challenge, and uncertainty prepares anyone to face their next “Everest” in life.

When Men & Mountains Meet by H.W. Tilman Pdf

'We had climbed a mountain and crossed a pass; been wet, cold, hungry, frightened, and withal happy. One more Himalayan season was over. It was time to begin thinking of the next. "Strenuousness is the immortal path, sloth is the way of death."' First published in 1946, the scope of H.W. 'Bill' Tilman's When Men and Mountains Meet is broad, covering his disastrous expedition to the Assam Himalaya, a small exploratory trip into Sikkim, and then his wartime heroics. In the thirties, Assam was largely unknown and unexplored. It proved a challenging environment for Tilman's party, the jungle leaving the men mosquito-bitten and suffering with tropical diseases, and thwarting their mountaineering success. Sikkim proved altogether more successful. Tilman, who is once again happy and healthy, enjoys some exploratory ice climbing and discovers Abominable Snowman tracks, particularly remarkable as the creature appeared to be wearing boots—' there is no reason why he should not have picked up a discarded pair at the German Base Camp and put them to their obvious use'. And then, in 1939, war breaks out. With good humour and characteristic understatement we hear about Tilman's remarkable Second World War. After digging gun pits on the Belgian border and in Iraq, he was dropped by parachute behind enemy lines to fight alongside Albanian and Italian partisans. Tilman was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his efforts—and the keys to the city of Belluno, which he helped save from occupation and destruction. Tilman's comments on the German approach to Himalayan climbing could equally be applied to his guerrilla warfare ethos. 'They spent a lot of time and money and lost a lot of climbers and porters, through bad luck and more often through bad judgement.' While elsewhere the war machine rumbled on, Tilman's war was fast, exciting, lightweight and foolhardy—and makes for gripping reading.

Christmas Colors by Joaquin Renero Pdf

Christmas Colors is a new A Christmas Carol for our modern hectic and often worrisome times. (Which seem to be sadly lacking in faith, hope, charity and magic.) It is the story of a family fragmented by distance and issues with their businesses, careers and personal and family relationships past and future. Determined to overcome this very Un-Christmas like spirit, the protagonist and narrator Jenny McKee, gathers her family together at their home in Austin, TX and proceeds to sprinkle a little Christmas cheer on them by motivating them to come together to prevent the loss of their fathers house painting business. In the course of the adventure new bonds are forged and a kind of strange Christmas magic begins to fuse the family back into a single motivated unit bent on overcoming their own fears and apprehensions, and unifying against the economic disaster of the past year. This Christmas miracle story is one of passion, whimsy, self-realization and renewal of faith; in God, belief in one another and even in the real Santa Claus. It is a fun; engaging family read that spreads the spirit of the Christmas colors, magic and cheer to every reader.

Why Israel (and its Future) Matters by John L. Rosove Pdf

Presented in the form of letters from a rabbi to his sons, Why Israel (and its Future) Matters argues that young Jews need Israel as a source of pride, connection, and Jewish renewal, and Israel needs them for the liberal values that they can bring to the Zionist enterprise. Exploring the roots and the occasionally antisemitic branches of the campaign against Israel, Rabbi Rosove demonstrates why it’s wrong to characterize Israel as an “oppressor state” and damn it with blanket condemnations. A 15-page appendix features a timeline/mini-history of Zionism and Israel from the 19th century through October 2023. “A must-read!” —Isaac Herzog, President of Israel “This thoughtful and passionate book reminds us that commitment to Israel and to social justice are essential components of a healthy Jewish identity.” —Yossi Klein Halevi, author, Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor “In its call for ‘aspirational Zionism,’ the book is honest and tough about Israel’s flaws, but optimistic about the country’s direction and filled with practical strategies for promoting change. This is a no-nonsense, straight-talking work, intellectually rigorous but deeply personal.” —Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie, President Emeritus, Union for Reform Judaism “A moving love letter to Israel from a rabbinic leader who refuses to give into despair, but instead recommits to building a democratic Israel that lives up to the vision of its founders.” —Rabbi Jill Jacobs, Executive Director, T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights “Rabbi Rosove grapples with modern Israel, Jewish identity, relations between Israelis and Diaspora Jews, and perhaps most significantly whether ‘you can maintain your ethical and moral values while at the same time being supporters of the Jewish state despite its flaws and imperfections.’ It is a book that many of us wish we had written for our own children.” —Daniel Kurtzer, Former U.S. Ambassador to Egypt (1997-2001) and to Israel (2001-2005)

Dark-Light by D.T. Reece Pdf

Everybody wants the truth until they hear it. Well, what if everything we were taught about creation, heaven and hell, aliens, angels, and, of course, demons was completely wrong, worse than it is already. The Dark-Light created us to blend together and live in a wonderful harmony, but the Dark, alone, wanted total control, as most evil does, so the Light must fight to keep the scales even. This is the real story of the Earth. After Dark-Light split into Adem and Lilith, they could not fight each other, so they decided to create a champion, known as a Brielle, to fight in their spot. The Righteous fights for the Light and for truth and justice whereas Armageddon fights for the Dark and all that follows evil. Lilith and Adem each create seven subordinates, known as Murmuhdons, but we call them the seven deadly sins and the seven righteous virtues, who serve the Brielle on Earth as they battle for control of the world and the universe. If we could just come together as one, we would be a prosperous and gorgeous world, but as always, you can’t have good without bad. Not all people are bad. Those are who the Righteous, the world’s first superhero, is fighting for. Destroying the Light is all that Armageddon is fighting for, and our way of life depends on the winner...
