Famous People You Might Meet in Eternity by Tony A. Powers Pdf

When former sportscaster Tony Powers went into surgery for a minor knee repair, he had no idea he would make a side trip to eternity. Once the pretty nurse placed the anesthesia mask over his face and told him to take a few deep breaths, Tony was blasted into the heavens like an astronaut aboard a rocket at Cape Canaveral. He couldn't believe how beautiful it was. He saw a cacophony of rainbow colors and a brilliant dazzling white cloud in the distance. He noticed millions of people of all ages, colors, and creeds as they walked toward the cloud on their way to judgment day. It wasn't long before Tony recognized famous actors, actresses, world leaders, historical figures, coaches, and athletes on their way to judgment. Was all this just an anesthesia-induced dream or a figment of his imagination? Had he been carried into the heavens suspended between life and death? Had Tony been thrust into the third dimension known as the Twilight Zone? Had Tony Powers crossed into eternity?

Tiger, Meet My Sister... by Rick Reilly Pdf

In this hilariously funny essay collection, ESPN columnist Rick Reilly compiles the best of his sports columns—essays that include his expert opinion on athlete tattoos, NFL cheerleaders, and even running with the bulls in Pamplona. Rick Reilly has no compunction telling readers, in his quick-witted style, how he really feels about some of the most popular sports figures of our time. Wondering about quarterback Jay Cutler? “Cutler is the kind of guy you just want to pick up and throw into a swimming pool, which is exactly what Peyton Manning and two linemen did one year at the Pro Bowl.” Or how about Tiger Woods? “Sometimes you wonder where Tiger Woods gets his public-relations advice. Gary Busey?” But for every brazen takedown, Reilly has written a heartwarming story of the power of sports to heal the wounded and lift the downtrodden: the young Ravens fan with cancer who called the plays for a few—victorious—games in 2012, or the onetime top NFL recruit who was finally exonerated after serving five years for a crime he didn’t commit. Whether he makes you laugh, cry, or just gets under your skin, Rick Reilly is sure to offer a unique and hilarious perspective on your favorite golf players, football teams, MVPs, and more. Rick Reilly has been called “one of the funniest humans on the planet—an indescribable amalgam of Dave Barry, Jim Murray, and Lewis Grizzard, with the timing of Jay Leno and the wit of Johnny Carson” (Publishers Weekly). With a new introduction and updates from Reilly on his most talked-about columns, Tiger, Meet My Sister... makes the perfect gift for sports fans of all kinds.

Meet the Candidate Videos by John Parmelee Pdf

Parmelee shows how presidential primary campaign videocassettes serve many functions for candidates on their road to the White House. These videocassettes, which include images and issues often based on polling data and focus groups, are sent out before the primaries to battleground states to establish an initial image of the candidate. A variety of methods are used to explore the videocassettes of the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates—Gary Bauer, Bill Bradley, George W. Bush, Steve Forbes, Al Gore, and John McCain—who released presidential primary meet the candidate videos during the 2000 race. Frame analysis, quantitative content analysis, and in-depth interviews with the producers of these videos were employed to provide answers to Parmelee's main research question: What function do candidate videos serve in presidential primary campaigns? Findings indicate that these videos, which can run from 5 to 20 minutes in length, serve a clear educational function to explain the candidates' stand on key policy issues. The videos—which are mailed to voters, journalists, and potential doners, and shown to Democratic and GOP faithful at party functions—also serve as fundraisers, surrogate speakers, and inoculators. But, while the videos share some common functions, each campaign targets its video to a slightly different audience based on the campaign's overall strategy. Of particular interest to scholars, students, and other researchers involved with American presidential politics and political communications.

Tales from the Chargers Sideline by Sid Brooks,Gerri Brooks Pdf

During his 27-year tenure with the Chargers, beloved equipment manager Sid Brooks kept more than 5,000 football players from appearing naked before their cheering fans. The first African American to hold the job of equipment manager in the NFL, Brooks was tasked with seeing that each player left the locker room in uniform. But the means to that end was far more complicated—and outrageous—than one would believe. In Tales from the Chargers Locker Room, Sid recounts stories unique to a life spent working behind the scenes in the Chargers locker room. He features stories about Chargers greats like Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Kellen Winslow, Louie Kelcher, John Jefferson, Rodney Harrison, and Junior Seau. With an eye for detail, he recounts tales of spies sent out to capture the opposing team’s playbooks; the night the lights went out on Don Shula; wild cab rides; the zany pregame rituals and idiosyncrasies; rivalries born not on the playing field, but at the dominoes table; and plenty of pranks and good-natured ribbing. Brimming with hilarity, insight, and fascinating behind-the-scenes stories, Tales from the Chargers Locker Room is a must-read for every Chargers devotee.

My First Coach by Gary Myers Pdf

From the New York Times bestselling author of Brady vs. Manning and dean of football writers - a book that explores the many interesting facets to NFL quarterbacks and their relationships with their fathers. Tom Brady's father is an estate planner. Jim Harbaugh's father had a long career as a college coach. Archie Manning played fourteen years in the NFL and never made the playoffs, but his sons Peyton and Eli won a combined four Super Bowls. Joe Montana is considered by many to be the greatest quarterback of all time, but his two sons bounced around college football with limited success. Jameis Winston's father supported his family working overnight highway construction in Alabama. Derek Carr's father moved the family to Houston after Derek's older brother, David, was drafted by the Texans. My First Coach goes behind the scenes to explore the unique relationship between these and other quarterbacks and their fathers, as well as investigate various approaches to parenting through their stories. Can young athletes overcome helicopter parents? How did the kids with NFL aspirations deal with their fathers who'd already made it? What kind of pressure did they have to overcome? What kind of pressure did the father who succeeded put on his son to be an athlete? Would the expectations be lower and the results greater if the father was an attorney or doctor? Was it better for the fathers to be overbearing, or borderline disinterested? My First Coach tells the compelling, real-life stories of some of the country's most famous quarterbacks and how they took advantage of or overcame their relationships with their fathers.

Tales from the San Diego Chargers Sideline by Sid Brooks,Gerri Brooks Pdf

During his 27-year tenure with the San Diego Chargers, equipment manager Sid Brooks kept over 5,000 football players from appearing naked before their cheering fans. The first African American to hold the job of equipment manager in the NFL, Brooks’ job was to see that each player left the locker room in uniform. But the means to that end was far more complicated—and outrageous—than one would believe. This reissue of Tales from the Chargers Locker Room takes the reader aboard the elevator to B2, the basement of Qualcomm Stadium, where the Chargers locker room is housed. In that basement, the equipment department and trainers, affectionately known as "dungeon rats," ran the Chargers locker room. There, Sid Brooks became caretaker for all who crossed its threshold. In this book, Sid recounts stories unique to a life spent working behind the scenes in the Chargers locker room. He features stories about Chargers greats like Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Kellen Winslow, Louie Kelcher, John Jefferson, Rodney Harrison, and Junior Seau. With an eye for detail, he recounts tales of spies sent out to capture the opposing team’s playbooks; the night the lights went out on Don Shula; wild cab rides with Fouts, Joiner, and Winslow; the zany pre-game rituals and idiosyncrasies of Russ Washington, Wilbur Young, Pat Curran, Woodrow Lowe, and others; rivalries born not on the playing field, but at the dominoes table; and plenty of pranks and good-natured ribbing. Rarely does a book offer more than a passing glance at what makes a football team a family. But Sid Brooks not only introduces the family here—he also invites the reader over for dinner.
