Memoirs of a Sportsman (Classic Reprint) by Isabel F. Hapgood Pdf

Excerpt from Memoirs of a Sportsman Some sort the conscience of a people. Before he was born he had lived for thousands of years; infinite successions of reveries had amassed them selves in the depths of his heart. No man has been as much as he the incarnation of a whole race: generations of ancestors, lost in the sleep of centuries, speechless, came through him to life and utterance. Records of the Chase and Memoirs of Celebrated Sportsmen by Cecil Cecil Pdf

Excerpt from Records of the Chase and Memoirs of Celebrated Sportsmen: Illustrating Some of the Usages of Olden Times and Comparing Them With Prevailing Customs The great popularity which the Chase has acquired renders it a subject of vast interest to a large body of the community and I have endeavoured to embody in these pages such incidents in reference to its origin, progress, and present state, as, I humbly conceive, may at once gratify curiosity and afford amusement. The Life of a Sportsman (Classic Reprint) by Nimrod Nimrod Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of a Sportsman MY design and object in writing this work was not merely to depict the life of a sportsman, in the general - perhaps, with some persons, unfavourable - acceptation of that term, but, taking higher ground, to portray the character of an English gentleman attached to the sports and pastimes of his country; and, likewise, to give a sketch of a country gentleman's family, in as close imitation as pos sible of those of the best description, with which it has been my good fortune to become acquainted. In fact, in many instances, the imitation, or resemblance, is so close, as not to be doubtful to many as to who are the original parties; and they themselves cannot be displeased with my selection, when they are intended to be displayed as examplars worthy of being followed by others. Thoughts Upon Sport by Harry R. Sargent Pdf

Excerpt from Thoughts Upon Sport: A Work Dealing Shortly With Each Branch of Sport to Which Are Added, a Complete History of the Curraghmore Hunt and Memoirs of Notable Sportsmen Seeing how easy it is to interfere with Hunting, so that the King of Sports might at any time be annihilated, as was the case with the Curraghmore, with which Hunt I was personally identified for over a quarter of a century, and fearing, perhaps, that an epidemic of antipathy to sport, such as we for a time suffered from in Ireland, might break out in England, I was induced to begin this book as far back as the week of Frigate's Grand National. My primary object being to strive to once more establish the popularity of hunting in Ireland, and perpetuating other sports in England, I approached each branch of my subject from a point of view which I am not aware was ever taken by any other author - viz., that of showing how Sport, quite irrespective of amusement, benefits our nation and has brought about our individuality. While doing so I have sandwiched personal expe rience and anecdotes, from which a moral bearing upon the object may at times be deduced. And, as a pattern for young fellows to follow, I have alluded in short memoirs to some of the most notable sportsmen of the century. According to my lights and to the best of my ability I have suggested reformation where I considered it was desirable or absolutely required and in doing so, being a plain writing man, as I am a plain-spoken one, I have had at times to hit hard, therefore my remarks will not be agreeable to some people. That I cannot help, however sorry I may feel. I have written my book as best I could in the. Interests of Sport pure and simple, so I have not paid attention to interests, which, however individual, are to my mind of secondary consideration. Forty Years of a Sportsman's Life (Classic Reprint) by Claude Champion De Crespigny Pdf

Excerpt from Forty Years of a Sportsman's Life Some fourteen years ago I published a volume of memoirs, in the compiling of which I had the kind assistance of the Duke of Beaufort and Mr. G. A. B. Dewar. It having been suggested to me that I have run through a good many experiences since then, I have been tempted to venture into print once more, and the result is the present volume. A portion of the former book, which deals with my earlier experiences, has naturally been retained, but, with the assistance of Mr. Harold Simpson, it has been thoroughly revised and brought up to date, and I have added another fourteen years of sport and adventure by land, sea, and air. If any apology is needed, I ofier it here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Annals of a Sportsman (Classic Reprint) by Ivan Turgénieff Pdf

Excerpt from Annals of a Sportsman The thought that inspired this composition is worthy of praise. The Reez't: d'un C/zasseur are destined chie y to de pict to us the interesting population which, to the shame of our century, is in Russia still groaning under the odious yoke of serfdom. Little country lordlings indeed figure in the stories; but they are placed in the background, and all interest is centred on the men who live under them. Every one will doubtless applaud the courage of the writer, who, under the suspicious regime then in all its vigor in Russia, did not fear to consecrate his pen to such an enter prise. Before him no one had dared to attempt it; the world in the midst of which he introduces us was a region unknown to Russian literature. My Life as Soldier and Sportsman (Classic Reprint) by J. Robson Scott Pdf

Excerpt from My Life as Soldier and Sportsman When a mere layman writes a book it is customary for him to inscribe a preface or, as Izaak Walton would say, an "epistle" to the readers. My original idea was to write and have printed a few personal reminiscences of the days and weeks I have spent in various sports, for the young folks who may come after me; in fact, I contemplated writing a sort of boys' book. However, it came to pass that I met, and discussed the subject with, Mr Arthur F. Meyrick who, like myself, is getting on in years. He is a most enthusiastic student of racing and other sports, and in addition to suggesting that I should write a larger volume, on more general subjects, he volunteered to contribute to my book by supplying details of the Grand National from Lottery to Troytown. Gradually, as the copy grew, so did the number of new ideas. Thus it came about that causeries on other sports suggested themselves to me. When a young man, Mr Meyrick followed in the footsteps of his father in the journalistic world, and knew most of the celebrities of his time. Edmund Loder, Naturalist, Horticulturist, Traveller and Sportsman by Alfred Edward Pease Pdf

Excerpt from Edmund Loder, Naturalist, Horticulturist, Traveller and Sportsman: A Memoir No biographer escapes criticism. A common remark among critics is that the attention of the writer should have been given to greater condensation and selection. In the following pages some of the extracts may appear superfluous to my readers, yet in every case I have had a reason for the quotation. There is not one, I hope, which will not interest someone, and not a few appear because of a belief that if they may seem of little value now they are more than likely to become interesting hereafter. In any case the question of the form in which a Memoir should be presented is one on which there are such vast differences of opinion that an author cannot expect to please all, whatever plan he may adopt.
