Memoirs of M. Thiers, 1870-1873 (Classic Reprint) by Adolphe Thiers Pdf

Excerpt from Memoirs of M. Thiers, 1870-1873 European Courts that for France and for Europe the best thing to do was to help the present Govern ment of France. Lord Granville fully accepted all I said on this matter, and if he had paused upon it it was as an objection, not on the part of England, but of Prussia seeking pretexts not to treat. He even asked me why the next Constituent Assembly had not been summoned as quickly as possible. I replied that the nature of the circumstances of the moment made it impossible, and in any case he seemed in this to wish to prove that he spoke not for himself but for Prussia, whose ill-will we have to neutralize. At length we came to present circumstances, and I asked what England was willing to do; I asked it in the most urgent manner, reminding him of our forty years' alliance, our brotherhood in arms in the Crimea, and the loyalty of our behaviour during the war in India. I asked if England would refuse all support at a moment when the madness of the fallen Government had left us disarmed before a Power that in no way disguised its passion for aggrandize ment. Massacre by John Merriman Pdf

The Paris Commune lasted for only 64 days in 1871, but during that short time it gave rise to some of the grandest political dreams of the nineteenth century—before culminating in horrific violence. Following the disastrous French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, hungry and politically disenchanted Parisians took up arms against their government in the name of a more just society. They expelled loyalists and soldiers and erected barricades in the streets. In Massacre, John Merriman introduces a cast of inimitable Communards—from les pétroleuses (female incendiaries) to the painter Gustave Courbet—whose idealism fueled a revolution. And he vividly recreates the Commune’s chaotic and bloody end when 30,000 troops stormed the city, burning half of Paris and executing captured Communards en masse. A stirring evocation of the spring when Paris was ablaze with cannon fire and its citizens were their own masters, Massacre reveals how the indomitable spirit of the Commune shook the very foundations of Europe.

Unruly Women of Paris by Gay L. Gullickson Pdf

In this vividly written and amply illustrated book, Gay L. Gullickson analyzes the representations of women who were part of the insurrection known as the Paris Commune. The uprising and its bloody suppression by the French army is still one of the most hotly debated episodes in modern history. Especially controversial was the role played by women, whose prominent place among the Communards shocked many commentators and spawned the legend of the pétroleuses, women who were accused of burning the city during the battle that ended the Commune. In the midst of the turmoil that shook Paris, the media distinguished women for their cruelty and rage. The Paris-Journal, for example, raved: "Madness seems to possess them; one sees them, their hair down like furies, throwing boiling oil, furniture, paving stones, on the soldiers." Gullickson explores the significance of the images created by journalists, memoirists, and political commentators, and elaborated by latter-day historians and political thinkers. The pétroleuse is the most notorious figure to emerge from the Commune, but the literature depicts the Communardes in other guises, too: the innocent victim, the scandalous orator, the Amazon warrior, and the ministering angel, among others. Gullickson argues that these caricatures played an important role in conveying and evoking moral condemnation of the Commune. More important, they reveal the gender conceptualizations that structured, limited, and assigned meaning to women as political actors for the balance of the nineteenth and well into the twentieth century.

The German Influence in France after 1870 by Allan Mitchell Pdf

Mitchell believes that the history of the French Third Republic remains incomplete until one understands the German impact on France after the Franco-Prossian War. As the French groped unsteadily toward a redefinition of their national identity, they were constantly under the influence of the victorious German reich, indicating that the creation of a republican mentality cannot be explained in strictly French terms nor can its origins be traced solely from French sources.
