Germany by Neil MacGregor Pdf

From Neil MacGregor, the author of A History of the World in 100 Objects, this is a view of Germany like no other Today, as the dominant economic force in Europe, Germany looms as large as ever over world affairs. But how much do we really understand about it, and how do its people understand themselves? In this enthralling new book, Neil MacGregor guides us through the complex history, culture and identity of this most mercurial of countries by telling the stories behind 30 objects in his uniquely magical way. Beginning with the fifteenth-century invention of the Gutenberg press, MacGregor ventures beyond the usual sticking point of the Second World War to get to the heart of a nation that has given us Luther and Hitler, the Beetle and Brecht - and remade our world again and again. This is a view of Germany like no other. Neil MacGregor has been Director of the British Museum since August 2002. He was Director of the National Gallery in London from 1987 to 2002. His celebrated books include A History of the World in 100 Objects, now translated into more than a dozen languages and one of the top-selling titles ever published by Penguin Press, and Shakespeare's Restless World.

Memories of the British Museum (Classic Reprint) by Robert Cowtan Pdf

Excerpt from Memories of the British Museum That is now known all the world over as The British Museum stands on the site of Montague House, which is as clean gone as if it had never existed. The first Montague House was burnt to the ground January 19, 1686, "than which," says Evelyn in his Diary, "for painting and furniture there was nothing more glorious in England." Lady Rachel Russell, who lived at Bedford House close by, witnessed its destruction, and mentions it in her letters. The second Montague House, which was to become the British Museum, stood in what was then a suburb of London, and with its beautiful gardens covered a space of nearly eight acres. Holocaust Memory and National Museums in Britain by Emily-Jayne Stiles Pdf

This book explores the Holocaust exhibition opened within the Imperial War Museum (IWM) in 2000; setting out the long and often contentious debates surrounding the conception, design, and finally the opening of an important exhibition within a national museum in Britain. It considers a process of memory-making through an assessment of Holocaust photographs, material culture, and survivor testimonies; exploring theories of cultural memory as they apply to the national museum context. Anchored in time and place, the Holocaust exhibition within Britain’s national museum of war is influenced by, and reflects, an international rise in Holocaust consciousness in the 1990s. This book considers the construction of Holocaust memory in 1990s Britain, providing a foundation for understanding current and future national memory projects. Through all aspects of the display, the Holocaust is presented as meaningful in terms of what it says about Nazism and what this, in turn, says about Britishness. From the original debates surrounding the inclusion of a Holocaust gallery at the IWM, to the acquisition of Holocaust artefacts that could act as 'concrete evidence' of Nazi barbarity and criminality, the Holocaust reaffirms an image of Britain that avoids critical self-reflection despite raising uncomfortably close questions. The various display elements are brought together to consider multiple strands of the Holocaust story as it is told by national museums in Britain.

The British Museum by Charles River Charles River Editors Pdf

*Includes pictures *Includes contemporary accounts *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading The British Museum has for centuries been a source of pride for the UK, and for good reason. Writing at the height of the Victorian Era, historian Edward Edwards observed, "In two particulars, more especially, our great National Museum stands distinguished among institutions of its kind. The collections which compose it extend over a wider range than that covered by any other public establishment having a like purpose. And, if we take them as a whole, those collections are also far more conspicuously indebted to the liberality of individual benefactors. In the public degree of which there is elsewhere no example, the British private Museum has been gradually built up by the munificence of open-handed Collectors, rather than by the public means of the Nation, as administered by Parliament, or by the Governments of the day." In the centuries that followed, the British Museum devoted itself to acquiring historical artifacts that showcased the influence and prestige of the British Empire, as well as the facilities in which to house them, surviving wars, financial challenges, controversies, and political pressures. In the process, it became one of the British Empire's greatest cultural jewels, and to this day it holds the distinctions of being the world's first national public museum and the most venerated museum of its kind in Britain. Of course, there are problems with almost every museum's collection, and the British Museum is a prime example. Objects in museums have to come from somewhere, and in many cases, the items on display were not passed on by the hands of the original owner. Put simply, museums have often acquired artifacts in dubious ways, and this was especially the case during the height of imperialism. Dealing with objects claimed by someone else is a constant issue in the 21st century, as it was over a century ago when Edwards noted, "[The museum] testifies to the strength amongst us - even at times deeply tinged with civil discord - of public and patriotic feeling. Nor is this all. It testifies, negatively, but not less strongly, to a conscientious sense of responsibility, on the part of those who have administered British rule in conquered countries, and in remote dependencies of the Crown. Few readers of such a book as this are likely to be altogether unacquainted with national museums and national libraries which have been largely enriched by the strong hand of the spoiler. Into some such collections it is impossible for portions of the people at whose aggregate expense they are maintained to enter, without occasional feelings of disgust and humiliation. There are, it is true, a few trophies of successful war in our own Museum. But there is nothing in its vast stores which, to any visitor of any nationality whatever, can bring back memories oi ruthless and insolent spoliation." The British Museum: The History and Legacy of Britain's Most Famous Public Museum examines the origins of the museum, the buildings, and some of the most important items housed there. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the British Museum like never before.
