Memories of the British Museum (Classic Reprint) by Robert Cowtan Pdf

Excerpt from Memories of the British Museum That is now known all the world over as The British Museum stands on the site of Montague House, which is as clean gone as if it had never existed. The first Montague House was burnt to the ground January 19, 1686, "than which," says Evelyn in his Diary, "for painting and furniture there was nothing more glorious in England." Lady Rachel Russell, who lived at Bedford House close by, witnessed its destruction, and mentions it in her letters. The second Montague House, which was to become the British Museum, stood in what was then a suburb of London, and with its beautiful gardens covered a space of nearly eight acres. Memories of Madras (Classic Reprint) by Charles Lawson Pdf

Excerpt from Memories of Madras According to Saint Beuve - as quoted by The Times, on the 1.4th' ultimo there is little that is new in this world, except what has grown old, and very often we discover what has already been known and forgotten. The reflection applies to this book, which contains glimpses of men and things of former days in Madras, that were obtained by delving in the archives of the British Museum and the India Office. The papers appeared originally in the Madras M ail, and have now been recast and enlarged. They are illustrated by examples of the methods of photo-engraving invented by Sir Joseph. The British Museum Library (Classic Reprint) by Gertrude Burford Rawlings Pdf

Excerpt from The British Museum Library This essay traverses some of the ground covered by Edwards's Lives of tin: Founders of tile Brz'tzir/z Museum, and the Reading-room manuals of Sims and Nichols, all long out of print. But it has its own field, and adds a little here and there, I venture to hope, to the published history of our national library. It is not intended as a guide to the Reading room. Lists of some of the official catalogues and other publications that form so distinguished a part of the work of the British Museum are appended for the convenience of students in general. The bibliography indicates the main sources to which I am indebted for material. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Catalogue of Books Placed in the Galleries in the Reading Room of the British Museum (Classic Reprint) by British Museum Dept Of Printed Books Pdf

Excerpt from A Catalogue of Books Placed in the Galleries in the Reading Room of the British Museum The present collection is not to be regarded as a Library of Refer ence. The chief object in forming it has been to bring together in a convenient position the books in general demand, and thus to save time in supplying books to the readers. Many books therefore which would not otherwise have found a place in it have been included, because they were found to. He often asked for, and others because they form parts of collections, desirable as a Whole, from which it was impossible to separate them. List of the Books of Reference in the Reading Room of the British Museum (Classic Reprint) by British Museum Pdf

Excerpt from List of the Books of Reference in the Reading Room of the British Museum The first edition of this List or Brief Catalogue of the Books of Reference in the Reading Room, consisting of nearly volumes, was published in 1859, the second in 1871. Since the latter date frequent improvements have been effected by the introduction of new works and of new editions, whenever these presented any advantage over those previously placed in the Room. For the present issue'a new Plan has been prepared, and a Postscript added to the original Preface of Mr. Winter Jones, in which the history of the Reading Room is continued to the present year. The Subject Index, which in former editions consisted solely of references to the names of authors, now gives the short-title and press-mark of every book indexed, and in its present greatly extended form it is hoped that it may be found useful to Readers. It should be stated that since the last edition of this List was issued a fresh selection has been made of nearly books constantly in demand, and that these have been placed in the Lower Gallery of the Reading Room, where they are at all times easily accessible to Readers. Many books which may be _missed from the Reference Library have, for various reasons, chiefly from considera tions of space, been placed in the Gallery, and neither collection can be regarded \as quite complete without the other. A Catalogue of the collection in the Lower Gallery, drawn up by the late Mr. G. W. Porter, by whom the books were selected, was published in 1880. The British Museum by Anonim Pdf

Excerpt from The British Museum: Historical and Descriptive In modern times, the earliest collections entitled to the name of museums were made in Italy, where, indeed, the fitting Objects already existed in greatest abundance. As, since that period, science and scientific tastes have spread, museums have been established in most European cities of importance, much richer than those of which the ancient world could boast; and even in comparatively modern America there now exist collections of great extent and value. List of Catalogues of English Book Sales, 1676-1900, Now in the British Museum (Classic Reprint) by British Museum Dept. Of Printed Books Pdf

Excerpt from List of Catalogues of English Book Sales, 1676-1900, Now in the British Museum In addition to these Special sets the Museum is fairly rich in the earlier catalogues and in those of other firms, though few of these are priced, and fewer still give the purchasers' names. For some twenty years in the middle of the eighteenth century the collection is very weak, but, taken as a whole, it offers to the student of the history of book-collecting an unrivalled mass of material. Partly to preserve this historical interest, but mainly because of the large number of early anonymous sales, and for greater economy in printing, the order of the List itself is chronological, with a full Index Of Owners, with the dates of their sales. Roman Medallions in the British Museum (Classic Reprint) by Harbert a Grueber Pdf

Excerpt from Roman Medallions in the British Museum This volume contains a Catalogue of the Roman Medallions in the British Museum. The metal of each specimen is given, and its size in inches and tenths. The weight of all examples in gold and silver is stated in English grains. Tables for converting grains into grammes, and inches into millimetres, as well as into the measures of Mionnet's scale, are given at the end of the volume (pp. 152-154). A table of dates and titles also there given (pp. 131-151) will enable the reader to find the year or period to which each medallion may be ascribed. Every medallion of interest is figured in the plates, which are executed by the Autotype mechanical process from casts in plaster, except in the case of the finest specimens, which are from drawings by Miss Godsall. The work has been drawn up under my direction by Mr. Herbert A. Grueber, Assistant in the Department of Coins and Medals. In the revision I have had the valuable aid of Mr. Head, Assistant Keeper, and Mr. Gardner, Assistant in the same Department. The British Museum by Henry Charles Shelley Pdf

Excerpt from The British Museum: Its History and Treasures; A View of the Origins of That Great Institution, Sketches of Its Early Benefactors and Principal Officers, and a Survey of the Priceless Objects Preserved Within Its Walls It is too late in the day to eulogize the last-named invaluable work of reference, but the writer would fain avail himself of this opportunity to offer his tribute of sincere gratitude to the memory of George Smith for the rare prescience and noble liberality which he displayed in the inception and publication of that greatest of all biographical dic tionaries.
