Methods and Experiments in Mental Tests (Classic Reprint) by C. A. Richardson Pdf

Excerpt from Methods and Experiments in Mental Tests This book is an attempt to provide, in a manner readily comprehensible to all those interested in the subject, an answer to some of the more important questions that have been asked as to the nature, validity, and methods of application of mental tests, and the conclusions to be drawn there-from. It is not an attempt to theorize, but to illustrate general principles on a strictly empirical and experimental basis, and it is hoped that all who follow developments in education and in psychology may find some points of interest in it. The experiment described in the second part of Chapter V was carried out in the county of Northumberland. The note at the end of Chapter IV was published in The British Journal of Psychology (April 1922), and I am grateful to the Editor for permission to include it in this book. The Mental Test by Lucy Shepard Crawford Pdf

Excerpt from The Mental Test: A Critical Discussion For several years past, the Departments of Education and of Educational Psychology throughout the United States have been intensely interested in the problem of testing human intelligence - oi finding an objective measure of mental capacity. The high enthusiasm of the pioneers and of their disciples has now carried the problem beyond the experimental laboratory, until today it has become a practical question which teachers in all depart ments, in all grades of school from the day-nursery to the uni versity, must sooner or later face and answer for themselves. As in all questions of educational theory and practice, it may be dangerous to accept blindly and without question or limita tion, the judgment of the enthusiast or the expert, no matter how firmly that judgment may seem to be based upon statistics and upon interpretations deduced from practical experience. Especially when a theory or practice is so revolutionary in charac ter, and in such obvious opposition to traditional practice especially then, are teachers under obligation to scrutinize it with the utmost care, in an effort to understand the fundamental principles upon which the theory is based, as well as the probable or possible effects which that theory seems likely to produce when put into general practice. The Use of Mental Tests in School Administration, Vol. 4 (Classic Reprint) by Virgil E. Dickson Pdf

Excerpt from The Use of Mental Tests in School Administration, Vol. 4 Within the last two or three decades the public school system has grad ually grown more and more complex. Not only have studies and curricula increased in number, but school organization has become highly differentiated and the means of ministering to the needs of individual children have been greatly multiplied. Indeed, a modern school system is as marvelous an expression of complexity in education as the modern city is an expression of complexity of social life. An accompaniment of greater complexity has been increased School costs. The greater costs are in part a result of the more varied features combined in the modern complex system. Increased costs are partly due, of course, to the gradually changing economic situation and to the higher standards of living which have been established. The need for careful study of any enterprise or institution increases as complexity becomes greater and as costs multiply. Public schools have shown themselves responsive to this need. Within the last two decades as a result of the initial efforts of Rice, Thorndike, Strayer, and others, scientific procedures applicable to analyzing and measuring the efficiency of school procedures and the costs of the same have been developed. By this time rather satisfactory standards have been established for judging the efficiency of a school plant, the organization of a School system, the ability of children in the various subjects from grade to grade, the costs which are reasonable for various types of school work, and so on. Just as a well established business enterprise no longer relies upon rule of thumb methods nor trial and error processes, so no school system which 15 economically and efficiently operated may rely upon such methods. In keeping with the foregoing considerations, the Board of Education of the Berkely Public Schools established a Bureau of Research and Guidance at the opening of the school year 1919. This bureau is responsible for con ducting a continuous survey of the most pressing educational and financial problems connected with'the operation of the system. Psychological Testing by Theresa J.B. Kline Pdf

"Psychological Testing by Theresa J. B. Kline is an accessible, easy-to-read book that effectively communicates the current concepts, trends, and controversies in the field of psychological testing. Readers are provided with an in-depth analysis of psychometrics in a format that will keep their attention and that they will be able to relate to the significance of psychological testing across numerous areas such as schools, businesses, clinical settings, military, or government." -Todd L. Chmielewski, PsycCRITIQUES, December 7, 2005 VOL. 50, NO. 49, ARTICLE 12 Psychological Testing: A Practical Approach to Design and Evaluation offers a fresh and innovative approach to students and faculty in the fields of testing, measurement, psychometrics, research design, and related areas of study. Author Theresa J.B. Kline guides readers through the process of designing and evaluating a test, while ensuring that the test meets the highest professional standards. The author uses simple, clear examples throughout and fully details the required statistical analyses. Topics include—but are not limited to—design of item stems and responses; sampling strategies; classical and modern test theory; IRT program examples; reliability of tests and raters; validation using content, criterion-related, and factor analytic approaches; test and item bias; and professional and ethical issues in testing. With the student in mind, Kline has created features that ease them into more difficult ideas, always stressing the practical use of theoretical concepts. Features include A step-by-step approach to designing a test, including construct identification, construct operationalization, collecting data, item assessment, and reliability and validity techniques Examples of data analyses with printouts and interpretation Up-to-date coverage of psychometric topics, such as difference scores, change scores, translation, computer adaptive testing, reliability and validity generalization, professional and ethical guidelines, and references IRT program outputs (dichotomous and multiple response) Coverage of traditional topics in the context of how they would be used, such as standard errors and confidence intervals Sampling approaches and their strengths and weaknesses, as well as response rates and missing data management Psychological Testing is perfectly suited as a main text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate Testing or Psychometrics courses in departments of Psychology, Education, Sociology, Management, and in the Human Services disciplines. Professional researchers, educators, and consultants will also want to add this to their libraries for up-to-date coverage of test design and evaluation techniques. "Professor Kline′s attempts to de-mystify complex measurement concepts are beautifully simplified and illustrated in her countless illustrations of practical and relevant problems for the mathematically-challenged student. This book is also a must-have for those who simply do not have the desire for the theoretical jargon used in similar textbooks but are interested in the important conceptual and practical aspects of measurement as they apply in their disciplines." —Arturo Olivarez, Jr., Texas Tech University "Kline′s Psychological Testing provides a well-written treatment of the critical issues in designing and evaluating psychometric instruments. This book will be very useful to advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers." —Richard Block, Montana State University

The Intelligence of School Children How Children Differ in Ability, the Use of Mental Tests in School Grading, and the Proper Education of Exceptional Children (Classic Reprint) by Lewis M. Terman Pdf

Excerpt from The Intelligence of School Children How Children Differ in Ability, the Use of Mental Tests in School Grading, and the Proper Education of Exceptional Children Three years ago the author of the present volume published, in this series. The Measurement of Intelligence. This represented a number of years of careful scientific work, on the part of himself and his students, in testing out and adapting to American needs and conditions the very important foundation work of the French scholar Binet. It was predicted at the time that the volume would prove of fundamental importance in pointing the way to more intelligent school room procedure, and that in time the mental measurement of all children not making satisfactory educational progress would become a matter of routine in the administration of a school. The reception given to the volume, not only in this country but in Canada and England as well, has exceeded expectations. With the entry of the United States into the World War, and the application of intelligence testing to our army recruits as a means of grading capacity and sorting them for the serious business of war, an entirely new impetus has been given to intelligence measurements As a result of the work done in the army, as much progress has been made during the past three years in the use of intelligence tests as ordinarily might have been expected in a decade.
