Mental Arithmetic by James Bates Thomson Pdf
At what precise age a child should begin to go to school, or commence the different studies, it is not our province to decide. Whatever may be the diversity of opinion on this point, all practical teachers seem to agree, that Mental Arithmetic is among the first exercises which should be presented to the youthful mind. The correctness of this sentiment is corroborated by the ease with which children understand simple combinations of numbers, their fondness for these exercises, and the obvious advantages which may be derived from them. But in order to become interesting or profitable, it is manifest, this branch, as well as others, must be taught in such a manner that the pupil shall understand it. The examples, therefore, must, at first, be simple, containing small numbers, and have reference to sensible objects with which the learner is acquainted ; the transition from easy to more difficult questions must be gradual; for the reason for every step in the solution distinctly seen.Typeset in elegant Garamond! Intellectual Arithmetic by Warren Colburn Pdf
Excerpt from Intellectual Arithmetic: Upon the Inductive Method of Instruction The names of a few of the first numbers are usually learned very early and children frequently learn to count as far as a hundred before they learn their letters. As soon as children have the idea of, more and less, and the names of a few of the first numbers, they are able to make small calculations. And this we see them do ever day about their playthings, and about the little affairs whic they are called upon to attend to. The idea of more and less implies addition hence they will often perform these operations without any previous instruction. If, for example, one child has three apples, and another five, they will readily tell how many they both have and how many one has more than the others If a child be requested to bring three apples for each person in the room, he will calculate very readily how many to bring, if the number does not exceed those he has learnt. Again, if a child be requested to divide a number of apples among a certain number of persons, he will contrive a way to do it, and will tell how many each must have. The method which children take to do these things, though always correct, is not always the most expeditious. The fondness which children usually manifest for these exercises, and the facility with which they perform them, seem to indicate that the science of? Numbers, to a certain extent, should be among the first lessons taught to them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Work and Play With Numbers (Classic Reprint) by George Wentworth Pdf
Excerpt from Work and Play With Numbers It has been recognized ever since the days of Pestalozzi that children when they first enter school have a taste for number work and also a considerable knowledge of numer ical forms. They use numbers in their games, they talk about them, they like to count, and they enjoy a little work and play with numbers within their mental grasp. On the other hand, children of this age are not ready for such a study of arithmetic as the formal textbook offers. A textbook of that kind would take away their love for number and would place upon them a burden heavier than they could carry. Not to begin the study of the subject when the child enters school, however, is to say that the child's natural tastes should not be fostered. What we need is to intro duce, in an informal and attractive fashion, such number work as is within his grasp at this time. Experience shows that children can easily learn the combinations in addition, and part of those in multipli cation, before taking up a formal study of the subject; in other words, they can cover the work included in this little book. Since the entire multiplication table is some times required, it is given at the end of the book, to be developed in the usual manner if necessary. First Days in Number by Della Vanamburgh Pdf
Excerpt from First Days in Number: A Primer of Arithmetic One of the first essentials in primary education is the ability of the pupil to talk without restraint and in good language. To correlate this phase of development with number work lends interest to the lesson, inspires self-confidence in the pupil, awakens the child mind to the realization of the wonders it is his privilege to explore. Number work is one of the means of the primary teacher by which the natural investigating tendency of the child may be turned into channels where he will make discoveries concerning the truths of nature and the inventions of man. The pictures throughout the book are not in any way designed to take the place of actual objects. Such objects as are attractive and interesting to the pupil are represented. They are familiar to him, and yet they suggest many avenues of study to the skilful teacher. The first few pages are suggestions for conversational work. Objects of life have been chosen because the animal kingdom naturally interests the child mind. Quadruped, biped, bird, fish, and insect are represented. The child is easily led to observe, study, and classify the animals around him. He is interested in observing the many kinds belonging to one class and in studying separately and comparatively their forms, foods, homes, habits, and usefulness. In this work, number appeals incidentally to the mind and little need be said in regard to it. Page 10 represents the inventions of man. The objects suggested should be studied with a purpose of discovering something of their manufacture, the material used, their parts, and their distinctive usefulness. First Lessons in Numbers by John H. French Pdf
Excerpt from First Lessons in Numbers: In the Natural Order: First Visible Objects; Second, Concrete Numbers; Third, Abstract Numbers As its general plan is unlike other works designed for the same grade of learners, it is important that teachers and parents should make themselves familiar Avith its peculiar characteristics, before using it in classes or families. General Divisions. Sections. The book is divided into fifteen sections, the first one of which is devoted to lessons in counting; the next eight to examples and combinations in Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division; the next three to the fractional parts of numbers halves, thirds, and fourths; the thirteenth to miscellaneous problems, embracing all the classes of combinations in the preceding sections; the fourteenth section to tables of the denominations of money, weight and measures in common use; and the fifteenth to combinations embracing the tables of Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Factors, and Aliquot or Fractional Parts. Articles. The division of the sections into articles indicates, in every case, either a new class of combinations, or a review of combinations already learned. For example. Section III, as its title states, teaches Addition and Subtraction, with the numbers 4, 5, 6, as one of the parts or terms. Article A contains combinations in Addition and Subtraction, with 4 as one of the parts or terms; Article B, with 5;and Article C, with 6, as one of the parts or terms. Articles Dand Eare reviews of all the combinations in the three preceding articles, the numbers leing concrete, and some of them perceptive; while the questions in Article Drequire the briefest form of answer. Tables of Money, Weight, and Measures. These tables, pages97-99, contain only the tables and denominations in common use. The stereotyped schoolmaster and school-book-maker arrangement has been discarded, and the denominations are here presented as they are used in business. Tables of Combinations. In Section XV these tables are arranged to be learned in the same order as they are developed in the previous sections. Everyday Number Stories (Classic Reprint) by George Baker Longan Pdf
Excerpt from Everyday Number Stories Suggestions for using the dialogues and the pictures. Two children may be selected to impersonate Kate and Frank, and the dialogue may be read in the usual way. Have the remaining children follow the reading and decide if the answers are correctly given. Children enjoy this, and several different pairs of children may be selected to repeat the reading. In the second and sub sequent readings, different numbers may be used so that the children will be kept on the alert. Or, the girls of the class may represent Kate and the boys Frank, giving the answer called for when all are ready. Another way is to disregard the dialogue form, and have the sentences or paragraphs read in turn, all pay ing strict attention in order to note if correct answers are supplied in the elliptical sentences. Supplement the lessons given by frequent use of measures suggested. Have the pictures carefully studied. Many of them are suitable for oral language lessons. Indeed, the entire book, if wisely used, will be of great assistance in reading and language, as well as in arithmetic.
