Advanced Technologies and Polymer Materials for Surgical Sutures by Sabu Thomas,Phil Coates,Ben Whiteside,Blessy Joseph,Karthik Nair Pdf

Polymeric materials offer a high level of versatility due to the range of applications possible within the biomedical and clinical fields – including wound closure - particularly in comparison to metals or ceramics. These specialised materials also allow for a diverse array of therapeutic effects. Although there have been advances in improving polymeric materials for surgical sutures, there is little information available regarding improving the therapeutic value of sutures, and advanced technologies used to implement this improvement. Advanced Technologies and Polymer Materials for Surgical Sutures provides thorough coverage on suture materials with improved mechanical and therapeutic properties that can improve quality of life; chapter topics include drug-releasing kinetics of sutures, shape memory polymer sutures and future trends. This book is a useful resource for academics and researchers in the materials science and biomedical engineering fields, as well as professionals in biomaterials and biotextiles development and clinicians looking to learn more about suture material properties and suture/body interactions. Depicts recent advances in both the therapeutic effects of polymer-based sutures, as well as the various manufacturing techniques employed in the production of sutures Offers an interdisciplinary approach, covering material properties and engineering technologies, as well as an understanding of the biological properties of sutures, such as suture/body interactions Comprehensive coverage allows both experienced researchers in the area and new entrants (such as clinicians) to learn more about this important topic

"Cricothyroid membrane - This is the landmark used for a cricothyrotomy procedure. Located between the cricoid and thyroid cartilage tissue, as shown in Figure 1, the membrane acts as a guide for establishing an airway for patients in emergency situations. Palpate superiorly to the sternal notch until the prominence of the cricoid cartilage is identified and a subtle step off is felt just inferior to the thyroid cartilage"--

Fundamentals of Hernia Radiology by Salvatore Docimo Jr.,Jeffrey A. Blatnik,Eric M. Pauli Pdf

This book offers a complete focus on the radiographic analysis of the abdominal wall and hernias. An estimated 20 million hernias are repaired annually throughout the world. As the technology utilized to complete hernia repairs becomes more complex, surgeons are required to have a more thorough understanding of the radiographic anatomy and diagnostic modalities used to evaluate hernias. Furthermore, the amount that now goes into the preoperative planning of hernias for complex repairs (such robotic and open transversus abdominis muscle release procedures) requires an understanding of radiology and the ability to identify nuances of anatomy offered by the imaging. The use of mesh and extent of re-do hernia repairs has also complicated radiographic evaluation of hernias. The text is a comprehensive review of abdominal wall imaging broken down into individual types of hernia. Each hernia type is discussed with consideration to the best type of imaging evaluation, unique radiographic findings and considerations prior to repair. Representative images, diagrams and videos are used to point out anatomy and features of the hernia. This text offers the first-of-its-kind standardized approach to evaluating hernias radiographically. Most importantly, each hernia and chapter is approached with the surgeon in mind, meaning, authors explain the radiology based on anatomy and with a plan for surgical repair on the horizon. Select chapters include illuminating videos to give context to the text. This is an ideal guide for practicing surgeons and trainees treating patients with hernias.

Northwestern Handbook of Surgical Procedures, Second Edition by Richard H. Bell, Jr. Pdf

The Northwestern Handbook of Surgical Procedures, 2nd Edition, is designed to be reviewed prior to performing or participating in an operation. The authors of the book have identified the key steps of performing each procedure, to provide a framework to the learner for understanding the tasks and the sequence of those tasks necessary for successful performance. Breaking a complex performance like an operation into a series of steps is a technique well validated in the educational literature and provides the basic scaffold upon which the surgeon-in-training can add nuances and variations that are encountered in the course of experience, ultimately building a strong mental model or image of the operation. It is the goal of this portable handbook to try to bring some degree of order to the complexity, focusing on many of the common operations in general, gastrointestinal, plastic, thoracic, vascular and pediatric surgery, and in organ transplantation. Each procedure has been divided into specific and well-defined steps to provide the beginner with a framework that can serve as a baseline and against which real-life experiences can be measured.

Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Health and Medicine Division,Board on Health Sciences Policy,Committee on Pain Management and Regulatory Strategies to Address Prescription Opioid Abuse Pdf

Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States by National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics,Policy and Global Affairs,Committee on Science, Technology, and Law,Committee on Identifying the Needs of the Forensic Sciences Community Pdf

Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
