Methodist Quarterly Review, 1877, Vol. 59 (Classic Reprint) by D. D. Whedon Pdf

Excerpt from Methodist Quarterly Review, 1877, Vol. 59 We also welcome this work as an intrinsically valuable one. Being professedly in the form of outlines, and compassing in one octavo volume a rather broad'treatment of the topics of theology, most of the discussions are necessarily brief. Yet the need of elaboration'is largely superseded by thoroughness of analysis, exactness of method and definitive statement, terseness, and clearnes's of style. We do not propose a general review of the work before 11s, tubing wholly impracticable indeed within the necessary limits of this paper. After a brief notice of the more prominent points, we may consider more fully the discussion of some of the cardinal doctrines of christian theology. His conscience in this respect was not so elastic as that of some of our modern ministers who, professing to be Arminians 1n their theology gulp down the whole Calvinistic system without a qualm. Excerpt from Methodist Quarterly Review, 1884, Vol. 36 A further argument against prayer-answer is, that to affix a special result to a prayer would be conditioning the order of events and the order of a perfect world upon the volition of an imperfect being. Have we not shown that imperfection in the world is often the condition of perfection? Surely the learned reasoner will not maintain that the world and its events are not modified by man's volitions, however imperfect. Pro feasor G. P. Marsh shows how man's volitions have changed the face of the earth. And the reasoning is especially malap r0pos in the case of answered prayer; since we shall soon show reason to believe that such prayer is always inspired and guided by God himself, so that the act of the imperfect being is sure to be, if not perfect, tributary to a perfect result. Methodist Quarterly Review, 1875, Vol. 57 by D. D. Wheldon Pdf

Excerpt from Methodist Quarterly Review, 1875, Vol. 57: Fourth Series, Volume XXVII In searching among barbarous tribes for the presence Of primitive religious notions, we must not expect to find them identical, or even similar, in their manifestations. If the prin ciple be present which prompts to action Of the religious class, it is the religious principle. TO the enlightened conscience Of Christianity these actions may be extremely incorrect; but we must recognize the nature Of the underlying principle. The conclusions Of two scientific men upon a debatable question may stand diametrically Opposed to each other - like the con clusions of Locke and Hamilton in reference to intuitive ideas - and we may feel sure that only one conclusion is correct; yet both conclusions, the erroneous not less than the correct, may demonstrate the existence Of a thinking faculty. Methodist Quarterly Review, 1881, Vol. 63 (Classic Reprint) by D. D. Whedon Pdf

Excerpt from Methodist Quarterly Review, 1881, Vol. 63 The Christian Church is growing richer in biography from age to age. It is a principle Of the divine economy that the righteous shall be held in everlasting remembrance. While this is primarily true of the remembrance which God cherishes of his own, however little they may be thought of by an nu sympathetic world, yet it also has its application to the Church, which delights to preserve the memory Of her holy men and women. The Methodist Episcopal Church has always manifested a commendable interest in properly written memoirs of her de ceased Bishops. But, unfortunately, in several instances there has been either a lack of data attainable for the production of such memoirs, or a lack of interest or industry on the part of surviving friends in preparing them.
