Homogeneous cosmological models, self-similar motion of self-gravitating gas and motion of gas with homogeneous deformation have important applica tions in the theory of evolution of the universe. In particular they can be applied to the theory of explosions of stars, formation of galaxies, pulsation of alternating stars etc. The equations of general relativity and Newtonian gas dynamics in the cases mentioned above are reduced to systems of a finite (but quite large) number of ordinary differential equations. In the last two decades these multi-dimensional dynamical systems were and still are being analyzed by means of traditional analytic and numerical methods. Important dynamical modes of some solutions were thus established. These include oscillatory modes of the space-time metric near a cosmological singularity, self-similar motion of self-gravitating gas with a shock wave and an expanding cavity inside (as in an explosion of a star), collapse of an ellipsoid of self-gravitating dust into a disc and others. However the multi dimensional dynamical systems in question are so complex, that a complete analysis of all dynamical modes of the solutions by means of well-known tra ditional analytic methods does not seem feasible. Therefore the development of effective methods of qualitative analysis of multi-dimensional dynamical systems and their application to the problems of astrophysics and gas dynamics previ ously unsolved by traditional methods becomes especially urgent.

Juan José Nieto Roig (born 1958, A Coruña) is a Spanish mathematician, who has been a Professor of Mathematical Analysis at the University of Santiago de Compostela since 1991. His most influential contributions to date are in the area of differential equations. Nieto received his degree in Mathematics from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1980. He was then awarded a Fulbright scholarship and moved to the University of Texas at Arlington where he worked with Professor V. Lakshmikantham. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1983. Nieto's work may be considered to fall within the ambit of differential equations, and his research interests include fractional calculus, fuzzy equations and epidemiological models. He is one of the world’s most cited mathematicians according to Web of Knowledge, and appears in the Thompson Reuters Highly Cited Researchers list. Nieto has also occupied different positions at the University of Santiago de Compostela, such as Dean of Mathematics and Director of the Mathematical Institute. He has also served as an editor for various mathematical journals, and was the editor-in-chief of the journal Nonlinear Analysis: Real World Applications from 2009 to 2012. In 2016, Nieto was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences. Peter Gabriel Bergmann started his work on general relativity in 1936 when he moved from Prague to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Bergmann collaborated with Einstein in an attempt to provide a geometrical unified field theory of gravitation and electromagnetism. Within this program they wrote two articles together: A. Einstein and P. G. Bergmann, Ann. Math. 39, 685 (1938) ; and A. Einstein, V. Bargmann and P. G. Bergmann, Th. von Karman Anniversary Volume 212 (1941). The search for such a theory was intense in the ten years following the birth of general relativity. In recent years, some of the geometrical ideas proposed in these publications have proved essential in contemporary attempts towards the unification of all interactions including gravity, Kaluza-Klein type theories and supergravity theories. In 1942, Bergmann published the book "Introduction to the Theory of Relativity" which included a foreword by Albert Einstein. This book is a reference for the subject, either as a textbook for classroom use or for individual study. A second corrected and enlarged edition of the book was published in 1976. Einstein said in his foreword to the first edition: "Bergmann's book seems to me to satisfy a definite need. . . Much effort has gone into making this book logically and pedagogically satisfactory and Bergmann has spent many hours with me which were devoted to this end.
