True Story by Michael Finkel Pdf

The improbable but true story of a man accused of murdering his entire family and the journalist he impersonated while on the run In 2001, Mike Finkel was on top of the world: young, talented, and recently promoted to a plum job at the New York Times Magazine. Then he made an irremediable slip: Under extraordinary pressure to keep producing blockbuster stories, he fabricated parts of an article. Caught and excommunicated from the Times, he retreated to his home in Montana, swearing off any contact with the media. When the phone rang, though, he couldn’t resist. At the other end was a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle, whom Finkel congratulated on being the first in what was sure to be a long and bloodthirsty line of media watchdogs. The reporter was puzzled. In Waldport, Oregon, Christian Longo had killed his young wife and three children and dumped their bodies into the bay. With a stolen credit card, he fled south, making his way to Cancun, where he lived for several weeks under an assumed identity: Michael Finkel, journalist for the New York Times. True Story is the tale of a bizarre and convoluted collision between fact and fiction, and a meditation on the slippery nature of truth. When Finkel contacts Longo in jail, the two men begin a close and complex relationship. Over the course of a year, they exchange long letters and weekly phone calls, playing out a cat-and-mouse game in which it’s never quite clear if the pursuer is Finkel or Longo—or both. Finkel’s dogged pursuit of the true story pays off only at the end, in the gripping trial scenes in which Longo, after a lifetime of deception, finally tells the whole truth. Or so he says.

Mea Culpa by Bruno Cocorocchio Pdf

A powerful memoir that dives deep into the childhood and psyche of the author, Mea Culpa: A Plea of Innocence chronicles the lifelong struggle of a boy—and later a man—to gain his parents’ approval. Longing particularly to ease his mother’s ever-present pain, he carries a misplaced guilt into every aspect—and relationship—of his life. In a series of vignettes, the reader is transported back in time to a small mountain village in post-war Italy. Amidst ruins and famine, a young family grapples with poverty. Growing up in such dire circumstances, the only coping strategy for the young boy is to imagine himself as a Roman centurion in command of an army. Adding to his stress is a mother who constantly draws him into a relationship that requires blind devotion and cruel sacrifice. Her craftiness and guilt-inducing methods are revealed in detail, making this a suspenseful narrative about survival. Written for readers who seek to understand why they are burdened with shame, Mea Culpa: A Plea of Innocence invites them into the courtroom of the author’s life, where they become judge and jury. Passionate, moving, and thought-provoking, this memoir will hold readers’ attention to the final page.

Mea Culpa by Steven Bender Pdf

"In Mea Culpa, Steven W. Bender examines how the United States' collective shame about its past has shaped the evolution of law and behavior. We regret slavery and segregationist Jim Crow laws: we craft our legislation in response to that regret. By examining policies and practices that affected the lives of groups that have been historically marginalized and oppressed, Bender is able to draw persuasive connections between shame and its eventual legal manifestations. Analyzing the United States' historical response to its own atrocities, Bender identifies and develops a definitive moral compass that guides us away from the policies and practices that lead to societal regret"--Dust jacket.

An Audition For A Murder by Lee Mueller Pdf

A Theatre group is holding auditions for a Murder Mystery called "Death of A Disco Dancer". All of the typical actors show up to audition. There is Mia Monahan - the militant method actress, Amber Frost- the ditzy Drama queen, Chad - the energetic actor who never seems to get a part in anything, Alan- the accomplished Theatre Major who works at a fast-food place in the meantime. Troy May - the ego-centric actor who always gets a role and his gorgeous assistant Tantanya who holds his imported bottled water and carries his Portfolio. And last but not least, Mrs. Needleman and her precious daughter Julie, fresh from the Little Miss Pumpkin Pageant finals. The auditions get underway without too many problems, well a few.. Well, all right, you see, the thing is.. the Director Vivian Vinderlou and assistant director Reed Moore have a bit of the problem with "script". The problem is they don't have enough copies for everyone. And the bigger problem is they don't actually have a finished script. Jim Culter- the playwright arrives in the nick of time with a few more copies and a few more finished pages just as one of the actors mysteriously dies. As luck would have it, Jim has brought Inspector Bonnie Brauvera along to the auditions to serve as Technical advisor for the play. Perhaps the investigation into this "mysterious death" will inspire the playwright and help him finish the play. After all, there is a read-through on Monday.

The Two Lives of Grand Duke Michael by Michael Roman Pdf

A vivid and well-researched novel about Grand Duke Michael who briefly reigned as the last Tsar of Russia. Fully illustrated to show the assets used and resumé of important political and armed forces leaders of time. No other books have taken a slice of Russian history and reinterpreted it to reveal a hidden story; one of survival against the odds and adventures that extend from Russia to the UK, Denmark and Estonia.. In The Two Lives of Grand Duke Michael, numerous historical high-ranking figures are set within an audacious plot in a ‘what if’ drama against the backdrop of the First World War and which could have changed 20th Century history. The allies plan to invade Russia, destroy the Bolshevik Revolution and bring back Russia to war with Germany on the eastern front. Lured by the idea of becoming the Tsar of the reinstated Imperial Rule, Michael is swayed by Lloyd George, Woodrow Wilson and Winston Churchill to bring him out of Bolshevik Russia to the UK. The purpose is to agree terms and incorporate Michael’s ‘Prometheus Accord’ for political renewal and freedom in Russia. The ensuing two-week journey provides high adventure and gripping entertainment as he journeys in exotic cars, battleships, sea planes and secret German submarines, and with the additional intent of secreting a multi-million pound hoard of Romanov treasures on the Yorkshire coast in the UK. It comes to a halting stop when, as history tells us, the Grand Duke Michael’s attempts to defeat the emergence of Bolshevism is thwarted, and he is assassinated whilst under house arrest in Siberia. Here the story is set for the author’s imagined second chapter for Grand Duke Michael. He carefully crafts, in detail, the revelation of his survival. How he is helped by Sidney Reilly of MI6, and his second life in the UK under a new identity and care of the British Secret Service whilst working at Bletchley Park in World War Two.

Crime, Passion & Conscience by Edward Gibbon Pdf

This writing is a wonderful effort to produce a book that: Reeks with authenticity Challenges the reader to predict outcomes. Both immediate and eventual. Intertwines a moral thread throughout with the final climax. Educates historically to the current reality. Brings to the reader a colorful caste of characters. Calls attention to the bias in the hierarchy of law enforcement agencies. Points to the ethnic predominance of cops and crooks. Infuses the reader with the impression that male chauvinism predominates law enforcement. Portrays "cops" motivation being emotional as well as moral. Asks the question, "does might make right?" "Boston Police Detective Sergeant Stuart Parnell McKeady was not fully aware of the moral debt he was incurring as he slipped progressively deeper into graft and corruption - but that debt would quickly come due." -William "Bill" Arbuckle Former California lawman and reviewer of books pertaining to crime cases. "The book The Great Brink's Holdup I co-authored with Sid Feder (Murder, Inc.) was factual. Crime, Passion & Conscience is factualized fiction. In my ten years on the force, I witnessed inefficiency and outright dishonesty from the top down. This fictional account shows how temptations can overwhelm conscience in a very difficult job. I am proud of the honest majority of police and of the Boston Police Medal of Honor bestowed on me." -Edward Anthony Gibbons

An Arrogance of Ignorance by Oscar Beauregardi Pdf

After years of prepping for the most important day of school, the first day, I came up with a phrase you, the reader, will come across numerous times: failure is the condiment for the flavor of success. I tell any teacher willing to listen that the first day is imperative as far as standard impressions are made and, in general, what the expectations would be. My eloquence to quote, vastly lacking by my own estimates, pale in comparison to most. The reader throughout this book will find many quotes, as appropriate as I deemed necessary and proper. Proper credit has been given to acknowledge those in history who have provided me with empowerment and inspiration for all the students to understand. Hoping that after thirteen years of AP world history teaching, the challenges should be greater than the regular class: supplying the above quote should have a more emphatic sense of the direction we were about to head. The right to fail, to try, and try again, if necessary, using various techniques and insights offered should provide the support these students would so desperately deserve. Nothing of value comes easy; it comes with struggleexperiencing the wrong to get it right. No student left behind is the credo for most public schools in the state. This is a more than subtle way of sending the message to all who educate our young today. As subtly is their forte this quote leads to an assumption that all students should be passed! Teachers become less stringent toward the academics: the reason they were hired in the first place! The personal baggage, which I allude to in the book, can be infectious for both teacher and student. I estimate that stress is all-consuming and deserves to be addressed, rather than allowing it to become all-consuming, much like the Leviathan. An autonomous teacher appears to be headed to the endangered species list. I lived to tell the tale. Teachers are dropping out like flies: those who refuse the autotron demands placed upon them by their higher-ups, those who fail to assist students in their most vital needsto know. Like Diogenes, good teachers shine their lamp to look for a willing student. I am a passionate man. This I admitted to as a fault when asked, in my interview for the educational position/job, What are your shortcomings as a teacher? I admitted that I care too much. This can be a deterrent. Maybe, if I could take literary license from Emily Dickinson (18301886), I can be summed up as follows: Im somebody. Who are you? Are you somebody, too? Then theres a pair of usdont tell! Theyd banish us, you know. Baggage / being close-minded / being self-important / being self-righteous/ nay-saying / being oblivious to moral obligation / utilized or brutalized into acceptance and ever popular entitlement expectationsthis is this arrogance of ignorance.

The Tuner of Silences by Mia Couto Pdf

A RADIO FRANCE-CULTURE/TÉLÉRAMA BEST WORK OF FICTION BY THE WINNER OF THE 2013 CAMÕES PRIZE AND THE WINNER OF THE 2014 NEUSTADT PRIZE “Quite unlike anything else I have read from Africa.""—Doris Lessing “By meshing the richness of African beliefs . . . into the Western framework of the novel, he creates a mysterious and surreal epic.”—Henning Mankell Mwanito was eleven when he saw a woman for the first time, and the sight so surprised him he burst into tears. Mwanito has been living in a former big-game park for eight years. The only people he knows are his father, his brother, an uncle, and a servant. He’s been told that the rest of the world is dead, that all roads are sad, that they wait for an apology from God. In the place his father calls Jezoosalem, Mwanito has been told that crying and praying are the same thing. Both, it seems, are forbidden. The eighth novel by the internationally bestselling Mia Couto, The Tuner of Silences is the story of Mwanito’s struggle to reconstruct a family history that his father is unable to discuss. With the young woman’s arrival in Jezoosalem, however, the silence of the past quickly breaks down, and both his father’s story and the world are heard once more. The Tuner of Silences has been published to acclaim in more than half a dozen countries. Now in its first English translation, this story of an African boy's quest for the truth endures as a magical, humanizing confrontation between one child and the legacy of war. PRAISE FOR MIA COUTO “On almost every page … we sense Couto’s delight in those places where language slips officialdom’s asphyxiating grasp.”—The New York Times "Even in translation, his prose is suffused with striking images.”—The Washington Post PRAISE FOR DAVID BROOKSHAW "David Brookshaw dexterously renders the novel's often colloquial, pithy Portuguese into lively English. Brookshaw's task is made more exacting by the particular quality of Couto's brilliance.”—The New York Times
