Mickey Newbury Crystal & Stone by Joe Ziemer Pdf

What do Tom Jones, Nick Cave, Joan Baez, John Denver, Ray Charles, Del Shannon, Keith Richards, B.B. King, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Carol Channing, Manowar and Linda Ronstadt... have in common? Mickey Newbury. They recorded his songs. Matter of fact, Newbury's material has been covered by over 1,230 artists. That is just about everybody. His inspirational ballad "An American Trilogy" has been recorded by more than 550 artists. It was Elvis' showstopper. His "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" is the rocker that launched Kenny Rogers' career into the stratosphere. Newbury, who grew up on Houston's tough North side, is the only songwriter to place four top hits on four different charts... simultaneously. The train hopper was also instrumental in mentoring Kris Kristofferson, who says, "God, I learned more about songwriting from Mickey than I did any other single human being. He was my hero and still is." Shotgun Willie Nelson adds, "He was one of the best writers we've ever had and one of the best friends I've ever had." And that is not all. Newbury's albums enjoy an extensive cult following. Peers consider him among the best of the best, and many artists refer to his albums as "perfect." Some call him a modern day Stephen Foster. Why then is Newbury known mainly to insiders? A well-kept secret? Too good for the masses? Two truths can be stated: The man cannot be pigeonholed, and he refused to sell out. Like crystal and stone, Newbury's fascinating story is clearly and solidly laid out. It may even change a few truths. As he wrote, Time has a way of changing everything Truth has a way of changing all the time.

Becoming Elektra by Mick Houghton Pdf

An account of Elektra Records in the Jac Holzman years, from 1950 to 1973, Becoming Elektra tells the story of the label's growth from a small folk label to a major hit-making concern. Jac Holzman's role in founding and running the company is central to the story, and his capacity for the lateral thinking that led to innovations such as the first-ever sampler album and a million-selling series of sound effects records is a recurring theme. Opening with the moment that Holzman discovered The Doors, the story then goes back to the '50s, when the label brought folk music to a wide audience through artists such as Jean Ritchie, Josh White, Theodore Bikel, and Bob Gibson. Moving into the '60s and '70s, the story covers artists that read like an inventory of musical innovation: Love, Judy Collins, Tim Buckley, Fred Neil, David Ackles, Phil Ochs, Bread, Queen, Mickey Newbury, The Incredible String Band, Carly Simon, The Stooges and The MC5.

Looks Like Rain by Brian T. Atkinson Pdf

Mickey Newbury (1940-2002) grew up in Houston and moved to Nashville in the early 1960s, following his muse. He wrote top hits for many well-known artists, including Don Gibson, Andy Williams, Kenny Rogers, Tom Jones, and others. He is probably best known, however, for being name-checked in the song "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)" by Waylon Jennings. Newbury has been cited by Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt, and many other eminent singer-songwriters as a primary influence. In his own independent fashion, Newbury helped to loosen the grip maintained for decades by the Nashville studio system, thus paving the way for later innovators like Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe, and others. He is still the only songwriter to produce hits on four different charts in the same year in 1968: "Just Dropped In (to See What Condition My Condition was In)" on the pop/rock charts, "Sweet Memories" on easy listening, "Time Is a Thief" on the R & B charts, and "Here Comes the Rain, Baby" in country. Following the successful pattern established in his previous works on Townes Van Zandt and Ray Wylie Hubbard, veteran music journalist Brian T. Atkinson has interviewed artists such as Kris Kristofferson, Bobby Bare, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and many others to learn how Newbury's influence continues to shape the musical and artistic approach of both seasoned and newer performers. Forewords by Larry Gatlin and Don McLean set the stage for a fascinating look back at one of the most revered songwriters and musicians of recent decades.
