Middle East 1940-1942: a Study in Air Power by Philip Guedalla Pdf

"The assembling and manipulation of British air power in the Middle East (an area that often seems to run from somewhere near Gibraltar to the gates of India) is one of the great stories of the war." Written in 1943, Middle East 1940-1942 was the first authoritative account of the decisive part played by the RAF in the Middle Eastern, African and Mediterranean theatres in the first half of the war. Philip Guedalla was attached to the RAF at the beginning of the war, receiving a complete tour of the scenes of operation in the Western Desert, Malta, Syria, Iraq and Eritrea. Spanning the long series of campaigns fought from the outbreak of war to the capture of Tripoli, Guedalla provides a detailed narrative of these early years. Supporting the British Army, the RAF bombed targets, dropped leaflets, took down enemy fighters and dropped paratroopers to liberate Crete. The wide reach of Middle East Command also fell to Malta, where bitter battles for control lead to terrible consequences for the Maltese. Middle East 1940-1942 is a fascinating insight to the Second World War in the air, written whilst the war continued. Praise for Middle East 1940-1942 'The late historian and biographer sought in these pages to recapture the spirit behind the men and the policy that saved the Middle East. As one would expect from Mr. Guedalla, his prose is exciting' - Foreign Affairs Praise for Philip Guedalla 'Polished, witty, lucid, excellently proportioned.' - The Times 'A brilliant piece of work.' - Spectator 'Lively, dashing, entertaining.' - Daily Telegraph 'Extremely well done' - Kirkus Reviews Philip Guedalla (1889-1944) was the Oxford University President of the Union Society. Later he was called to the Bar and contested several Parliamentary elections as a Liberal. Having become interested in British relations with South America, he founded the Ibero-American Institute and was responsible for the Latin-American Division of the British Council. He lectured in both North and South America, and broadcast frequently to South America. Among other distinguished books by him are The Second Empire, Palmerston and Mr Churchill.

MEDITERRANEAN AND MIDDLE EAST VOLUME III (September 1941 to September 1942) British Fortunes Reach Their Lowest Ebb. HISTORY OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR: by Major-General I. S. O. Playfair Pdf

This, the third of eight volumes in the 18-volume official British History of the Second World War, dealing with the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern theatres, describes the nadir of British fortunes in the region. Covering the year from September 1941 to September 1942, the book opens with the latest round in the ding-dong battle in North Africa with 'Operation Crusader', Britain's bid to relieve the besieged port of Tobruk and chase Rommel from the western desert. The authors emphasise how Britain was hampered by obsolescent equipment such as the Crusader tank. Despite this, British, Australian and South African forces relieved Tobruk and entered Benghazi on Christmas Day 1941 - only to evacuate it after Rommel's swift recovery the following month. At sea, the Royal Navy suffered serious blows with the loss of 'Ark Royal' and 'Barham' and a daring Italian 'human torpedo' attack on British ships in Alexandria harbour. Axis air attacks on Malta and convoys supplying it reached their peak in April, and the island was awarded the George Cross for its gallant defence. Rommel counter-attacked in the desert in May, defeating the Eighth Army at Gazala, and on June 21st Tobruk was lost. But the Axis attempt to take Cairo was stalled at the battle of Alam el Halfa and, after General Auchinleck was replaced by General Montgomery, the Allies prepared to go back on the offensive. With 11 appendices, 40 maps and diagrams and 40 photographs.

The Secret Anglo-French War in the Middle East by Meir Zamir Pdf

The role of intelligence in colonialism and decolonization is a rapidly expanding field of study. The premise of The Secret Anglo-French War in the Middle East is that intelligence statecraft is the "missing dimension" in the established historiography of the Middle East during and after World War II. Arguing that intelligence, especially covert political action and clandestine diplomacy, played a key role in Britain's Middle East policy, this book examines new archival sources in order to demonstrate that despite World War II and the Cold War, the traditional rivalry between Britain and France in the Middle East continued unabated, assuming the form of a little-known secret war. This shadow war strongly influenced decolonization of the region as each Power sought to undermine the other; Britain exploited France's defeat to evict it from its mandated territories in Syria and Lebanon and incorporate them in its own sphere of influence; whilst France’s successful use of intelligence enabled it to undermine Britain's position in Palestine, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Shedding new light on the clandestine Franco-Zionist collaboration against Britain in the Middle East and the role of the British secret services in the 1948 Arab-Jewish war in Palestine, this book, which presents close to 400 secret Syrian and British documents obtained by the French intelligence, is essential reading for scholars with an interest in the political history of the region, inter-Arab and international relations, and intelligence studies.

Tobruk 1942 by David Mitchelhill-Green Pdf

Tobruk was one of the greatest Allied victories – and one of the worst Allied defeats – of the Second World War. The 1942 fiasco rocked the very foundation of Winston Churchill's premiership. It revived the flagging hopes of the German people and fanned the flames of Arab unrest. Furthering Rommel's ascendency and souring relations within the British Commonwealth, it marked a turning point in Anglo-American relations in the fight against Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. Utilising a wealth of primary and secondary sources, Tobruk 1942 examines why the fortress fell to Rommel's Axis forces in just 24 hours when it held out against repeated attacks the previous year. Comparing the 1941 and 1942 battles, this book presents a new perspective on Tobruk – the isolated Libyan fortress, and symbol of Allied freedom, which for a period in the war captured the world's attention.

El Alamein by Kelvin Crombie Pdf

In January 1942 the Nazi leadership declared its intentions to annihilate all eleven million Jewish people in Europe. Nearly a million had already been murdered, mostly by squads known as Einsatzgruppen. Then in July 1942 the Nazi leadership ordered the despatch to the Middle East of a specialized SS murder squad - the Einsatzkommando Egypt - which was to enlist local collaborators to help fulfil their alotted task. This book looks at the Middle East campaign of 1940-1942 and how the Allied victory which culminated at El Alamein in November 1942 thwarted both the military objectives of the German-led army to capture the Suez Canal, and the possibility of the Holocaust entering into the Middle East. It also looks at the relationship between the Arab nationalist movement and its main spokesman, Haj Amin el-Husseini (the Mufti of Jerusalem), with Hitler and Nazi Germany.
