Military History Of Ulysses S. Grant From April 1861 To April 1865 Vol. I by General Adam Badeau Pdf

Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. Few men can have known General and President of the United States Ulysses S. Grant as well as General Adam Badeau. As Grant’s military secretary during 1864-1865, he came to know and work closely with the future president; he wrote his classic account of General Grant’s military abilities. Allowed access to documents produced on both the Union and Confederate armies during the war, Badeau weaves these into an excellent narrative. As a soldier himself Badeau is able to give a critical account of the battles actions and motivations that Grant was engaged in. An excellent military biography.

Military History of Ulysses S. Grant, Vol. 1 by Adam Badeau Pdf

Excerpt from Military History of Ulysses S. Grant, Vol. 1: From April, 1861, to April, 1865 The fact that I became a member of General Grant's personal staff, before he assumed command of the armies of the United States, and that I have since remained with him, is the voucher that I offer for the correctness of this history. I have not meant to state one fact, unless it came under my own per sonal observation, or has been told me by the gen eral of the army, or one of his important officers, or unless I know it from official papers. When I deviate from this rule, I make the deviation known. The correspondence, telegraphic and written, of the headquarters of the armies, is accessible to me. I have also been allowed to examine all papers under the control of the Tar Department; and, as many of the rebel archives are now in the posses sion of the government, I have seen the original reports made by the rebel generals, of every battle but two, which I have attempted to describe. Military History of Ulysses S. Grant, Vol. 2 by Adam Badeau Pdf

Excerpt from Military History of Ulysses S. Grant, Vol. 2: From April, 1861 to April, 1865 The first volume of this work relates to the earlier period of General Grant's military career, when I was not personally associated with him, and was intended as a prelude to the more important portion. The present volumes constitute the history of the last year of the war, when he commanded all the armies of the Republic. During this period I was his military secretary and aide-de-camp, and therefore an eye-witness of the important circumstances in which he personally participated. I knew his plans and wishes, as well as his judgments of men and events. His correspondence with the government, and with army and corps commanders, was familiar to me at the time. I have since examined the entire official record of the year, including the returns of troops and all the reports in existence by either national or rebel officers above the rank of brigadier-general.
