With emancipation, a long battle for equal citizenship began. Bringing together the histories of religion, race, and the South, Elizabeth L. Jemison shows how southerners, black and white, drew on biblical narratives as the basis for very different political imaginaries during and after Reconstruction. Focusing on everyday Protestants in the Mississippi River Valley, Jemison scours their biblical thinking and religious attitudes toward race. She argues that the evangelical groups that dominated this portion of the South shaped contesting visions of black and white rights. Black evangelicals saw the argument for their identities as Christians and as fully endowed citizens supported by their readings of both the Bible and U.S. law. The Bible, as they saw it, prohibited racial hierarchy, and Amendments 13, 14, and 15 advanced equal rights. Countering this, white evangelicals continued to emphasize a hierarchical paternalistic order that, shorn of earlier justifications for placing whites in charge of blacks, now fell into the defense of an increasingly violent white supremacist social order. They defined aspects of Christian identity so as to suppress black equality—even praying, as Jemison documents, for wisdom in how to deny voting rights to blacks. This religious culture has played into remarkably long-lasting patterns of inequality and segregation.

He never forgot the gravity and dignity of his high calling, and hence was an excellent pastor. His visits brought sunshine and good cheer to many sad and aching hearts. He was always and everywhere truly a man of God. As a preacher he was far above the average. As a revivalist he was a great success. Many hundreds were converted and brought into the church through his ministry. He was a man of uncommon power as a doctrinal preacher. In his field it was often necessary to defend the doctrines of the church. This he could do with ability and safety. In debate he feared no Opponent. He was a man of broad mind and large heart. He read good literature and was a diligent student of God's word. He believed with all his heart that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth. His life was a practical demonstration of the saving power of the gospel. He accepted and taught without mental reservation the entire Methodist creed, and always stood ready to give a reason for the faith that was in him. But withal, he was broad, liberal and fraternal with Christians of other communions. Brother Bowman had the trying experience to be thrown, rather late in life, into new territory, and among new pe0p1e, by the adjustment of Conference boundaries. He examines the progress and achievements, along with the frustrations, of South Carolina's African Americans in politics, education, labor, and various aspects of social life during the short decades before segregation became the law and custom of the land. Chronicling the evolution of Jim Crow white supremacy, the book originally appeared on the eve of the Civil Rights movement when the nation's system of disfranchisement, segregation, and economic oppression was coming under increasing criticism and attack. Along with Vernon L. Wharton's The Negro in Mississippi, 1865–1890 (1947) which also shed new light on the period after Reconstruction, Tindall's treatise served as an important source for C. Vann Woodward's influential The Strange Career of Jim Crow (1955). South Carolina Negroes now reappears fifty years later in an environment of reaction against the Civil Rights movement, a a situation that parallels in many ways the reaction against Reconstruction a century earlier. A new introduction by Tindall reviews the book's origins and its place in the literature of Southern and black history.
