Lost Lands, Forgotten Realms by Bob Curran Pdf

“A comprehensive encyclopedia of fantastic places straddling the nebulous borderlands between fact and fantasy.” —Frank Joseph, author of Opening the Ark of the Covenant There are places that turn up in literature or in film—mystical and legendary places whose names may be familiar but about which we know little. We nod knowingly at the reference, but are often left wondering about places such as Atlantis, the lost land overwhelmed by the sea, or El Dorado, the fabulous city that vanished somewhere in the South American jungles. Other names are more evocative—Mount Olympus, the Garden of Eden, the mystic Isle of Avalon, and Davy Jones’ Locker. But did such places actually exist and if so, where were they, and what really happened? What are the traditions and legends associated with them? In the fascinating book, Lost Lands, Forgotten Realms, historian Dr. Bob Curran sets out to find the answers by journeying to the far-flung corners of the world and to the outer reaches of human imagination. “In this fascinating encyclopedia of places that time forgot, Irish psychologist and historian Dr. Bob Curran brings the legends alive.” —Nexus magazine “Learned and erudite, yet written in an accessible and exceptionally readable style, this book is invaluable for those interested in the mysteries of vanished civilizations.” —Brian Haughton, author of Hidden History

East Asia's Other Miracle by Alex J. Bellamy Pdf

East Asia, until recently the scene of widespread blood-letting, has achieved relative peace. A region that at the height of the Cold War had accounted for around eighty percent of the world's mass atrocities has experienced such a decline in violence that by 2015 it accounted for less than five percent. This book explains East Asia's 'other' miracle and asks whether it is merely a temporary blip in the historical cycle or the dawning of a new, and more peaceful, era for the region. It argues that the decline of mass atrocities in East Asia resulted from four interconnected factors: the consolidation of states and emergence of responsible sovereigns; the prioritization of economic development through trade; the development of norms and habits of multilateralism, and transformations in the practice of power politics. Particular attention is paid to North Korea and Myanmar, countries whose experience has bucked regional trends largely because these states have not succeeded in consolidating themselves to the point where they no longer depend on violence to survive. Although the region faces several significant future challenges, this book argues that the much reduced incidence of mass atrocities in East Asia is likely to be sustained into the foreseeable future.

The Miracle Tales by Sophia T. Coombes Pdf

"The Miracle Tales" is a collection of eight shining stories that will take you on a journey of unconditional love and what it means to hold on. Sophia's stories are so creative, imaginative, and delightful. They remind me so much of beautiful stories I read as a little girl. I am sure that kids reading them will love them and be able to envision the stories as they come to life. I love the message in each story also, and it is no problem at all to recognize the spiritual aspects of these stories. I think that in this day that we are living in, we need so much to teach children right from wrong, good and bad, evil and good! Kids love stories that fill their imaginations; these not only will accomplish this, but the added spiritual messages are vital. God bless you, Sophia, and may the Lord bless your good work! -Roberta Simpson, author of "Nana's Bible Stories," "Once upon a Christmas," and "Tales from the Ark"

Forgotten Legacies Collection by KJ Simmill Pdf

All four books in 'Forgotten Legacies', a series of epic fantasy novels by KJ Simmill, now in one volume! Darrienia: It is said that the past always returns to haunt you, yet some forgotten pasts have whispered names and a debt for collection. Dangerous curiosities stir a hidden darkness, one that patiently waits to seize control. The subtle periphery between dream and reality is in peril, and those chosen must face the evil behind this looming disaster. But can would-be-heroes discover the truth in time, or will they become nothing more than pawns of evil? The Severaine: Across the countless span of time, a threat rises, heralding the end of man's rule and laying to waste those who defiled its mistress. It is known as the Severaine: a power that could bring even the Gods themselves to their knees. Our heroes had been tasked to save the world, yet by their hand it was plunged into peril. But fate will not relinquish its hold on the ones who are chosen. Creatures once forced into slumber rise, their cries heralding a new dawn as the Severaine awakens. Its sole purpose is to purge and remake the world. Remedy: Before there were legends, there was war. Before fables became twisted truth and distorted tales. Now, whispers from an ancient realm threaten the peace, drawing a lone adventurer into The Depths of Acheron. He seeks something from within this sealed domain, and those banished want something in return. Something belonging to them. The time has come for the forgotten to be unveiled, and for the sealed to be unbound. Only then will the world know true fear. The Dream Walker: All which had come to pass had led to this. Prophecies and events, manipulated through shadows, had paved the way for his return. Sacrifices bled, gateways opened, and now The Father of Nightmares was free at last. This time there would be no mistakes; no force with the power required to stand against him. The Mystics thought by sealing him within The Forest of The Epiales, they had weakened him, but instead they had given him the key to victory. Now, all must unite to prevent the darkness which is to come. Should they fail, should darkness fall and unleash its ancient gaolers, then all hope will be lost.

The Miracle of the Black Leg by Patricia Williams Pdf

Brilliant essays from the renowned Nation columnist—aka the Mad Law Professor—tackling questions of identity, bioethics, race, surveillance, and more Beginning with a jaw-dropping rumination on a centuries-old painting featuring a white man with a Black man’s leg surgically attached (with the expired Black leg-donor in the foreground), contracts law scholar and celebrated journalist Patricia J. Williams uses the lens of the law to take on core questions of identity, ethics, and race. With her trademark elegant prose and critical legal studies wisdom, Williams brings to bear a keen analytic eye and a lawyer’s training to chapters exploring the ways we have legislated the ownership of everything from body parts to gene sequences—and the particular ways in which our laws in these areas isolate nonnormative looks, minority cultures, and out-of-the-box thinkers. At the heart of “Wrongful Birth” is a lawsuit in which a white couple who use a sperm bank sue when their child “comes out Black”; “Bodies in Law” explores the service of genetic ancestry testing companies to answer the question of who owns DNA. And “Hot Cheeto Girl” examines the way that algorithms give rise to new predictive categories of human assortment, layered with market-inflected cages of assigned destiny. In the spirit of Dorothy Roberts, Rebecca Skloot, and Anne Fadiman, The Miracle of the Black Leg offers a brilliant meditation on the tricky place where law, science, ethics, and cultural slippage collide.

A Garland of Forgotten Goddesses by Michael Slouber Pdf

Imagining the divine as female is rare—even controversial—in most religions. Hinduism, by contrast, preserves a rich and continuous tradition of goddess worship. A Garland of Forgotten Goddesses conveys the diversity of this tradition by bringing together a fresh array of captivating and largely overlooked Hindu goddess tales from different regions. As the first such anthology of goddess narratives in translation, this collection highlights a range of sources from ancient myths to modern lore. The goddesses featured here battle demons, perform miracles, and grant rare Tantric visions to their devotees. Each translation is paired with a short essay that explains the goddess’s historical and social context, elucidating the ways religion adapts to changing times.
