Discourse, Grammar and Typology by Werner Abraham,T. Givón,Sandra A. Thompson Pdf

This volume combines papers selected for their affinity with work on discourse analysis and language typology. The methodological platform is the authors' conviction that all linguistic work needs to be empirical in the sense that (1) generalizations are to be made on the basis of spoken texts in larger contexts, (2) generalizations are correct only as long as pertinent linguistic material does not contradict them, and (3) that linguistic categories and rules are of a temporal nature. In this sense, the contributions represent 'functional typological' comparison, often of languages not frequently investigated. The papers are arranged in 5 groups: Transitivity and voice; Clausal modality; Typology and discourse categories; Language and Culture; Functionality.

The Papuan Languages of Timor, Alor and Pantar: Volume 3 by Antoinette Schapper Pdf

These volumes present sketches of the Papuan languages scattered over the islands of Timor, Alor and Pantar. Together they give an authoritative and comprehensive overview of the unique and diverse grammars of the Timor-Alor-Pantar languages, a family of 'Papuan outliers' located at the western perimeter of Melanesia. While largely undescribed until recently, the Timor-Alor-Pantar languages are now among the most intensively studied Papuan families. In this third volume, five new sketches of members of the family are presented, all written by specialist linguists on the basis of original field work.

Sociolinguistics and Dialectological Studies in Indonesia by Sonya Puspasari Suganda,Antonia Soriente Pdf

"This book contains chapters which are classified into three major themes, namely Dialectology Studies in Indonesia, Sociolinguistics Issues in Java, and Meanings and Society. The first part of the edited volume discusses the close relationship between culture, traditions, and myths in the community, such as the tradition of Labuhan in East Java as a ritual offering to the Queen of the Southern Sea. There are multiple factors influencing languages in different regions in Indonesia, which include economic development from the tourism sector. The second part focuses on the concept of the relationship between language and its speakers. Family, as the smallest unit of society, is considered the most ideal place for language maintenance. Country is also assumed to play an important role in determining what language to maintain through lessons taught in school. The interesting thing, however, is that in the Indonesian context, administrative boundary is not always equivalent with the language boundary. Expansion or unification of regions, for instance, may change the language curriculum taught in schools. Meanwhile, Meanings and Society chapters show that the intention to maintain tradition and establish harmonious relations with other speakers from different backgrounds may also influence the way someone speaks. It is not surprising, therefore, that code switching in a conversation, which is done with the intention to show solidarity towards speakers from different backgrounds, has become a common phenomenon in Indonesia. The studies in this book constitute empirical studies of the Indonesian people's everyday lives particularly those concerning the abundance of languages spoken across the country"--

A Survey of Word Accentual Patterns in the Languages of the World by Harry van der Hulst,Rob Goedemans,Ellen van Zanten Pdf

This volume contains a wealth of information on the word accentual (metrical, stress) phenomena that we encounter in natural languages. Two types of information will be supplied: language profiles in 'tabular form' and survey articles. Of the total of 10 chapters in Part I, 3 are general in nature, while the other 7 describe and analyze word accentual systems in all continents. The volume's point of departure is a database called StressTyp. StressTyp developed into a database on word prosodic systems of the languages of the world. The over 500 languages, representing a wide geographical distribution, taken from the StressTyp database will be represented in this volume. For all these languages, information regarding identity, sources and stress location(s) will be included, accompanied by some examples in nearly all cases. These language data packages will be organized by language family. This information constitutes Part II of the volume.

A Grammar of Madurese by William D. Davies Pdf

Madurese is a major regional language of Indonesia, with some 14 million speakers, mainly on the island of Madura and adjacent parts of Java, making it the fourth largest language of Indonesia after Indonesian, Javanese, and Sundanese. There is no existing comprehensive descriptive grammar of the language, with existing studies being either sketches of the whole grammar, or detailed descriptions of phonology and morphology or some particular topics within these components of the grammar. There is no competing work that provides the breadth and depth of coverage of this grammar, in particular (though not exclusively) with regard to syntax.
