This book provides a readable yet rigorous introduction to analytical methods with a focus on problem-solving skills. It stresses the fundamental concepts of chemical analysis and, through examples from current journals and other science media, shows how the principles and practice of analytical chemistry are used to produce answers to questions in all areas of scientific study and practice.Features a balance of topics that is closer to contemporary analytical practice than those covered by other books. Introduces the tools that are ubiquitous in analytical chemistry e.g., statistics, sampling and sample preparation. Discusses methods depending on chemical kinetics which are so widely used in medicine and biology. Features a number of problems that call for the use of a speadsheet to generate data, which is then plotted to show trends. Includes answers for all numerical problems in an appendix.

Chemical Analysis of the Environment and Other Modern Techniques by Sut Ahuja Pdf

With the rise in general awareness of the effects of trace chemicals in the environment on man's health, it has been realized that traditional methods of analysis are often inadequate. Reliable analyses are needed in the fractional parts-per million range of contaminants in condensed phases, and of the order of micrograms per cubic meter in air. Trying to get meaningful answers regarding such minute amounts raises cogent problems in all stages of an analysis. It is most appropriate, therefore, that the 1971 Eastern Analytical Symposium should have four half-day sessions devoted to this general field. Two of these, entitled "Trace Metals in the Envi ronment," were assembled by Dr. Kneip, one on "Pesticides in the Environment: Recently Discovered Analytical Problems," by Dr. Zweig, and one on "The Determination of Anions in Water," by Dr. Lambert. Together, these reports furnish a fairly complete picture of the present state of environmental anal ysis. The remainder of this volume is devoted to pharmaceutical analysis, a diversified field in which nearly all analytical methods find a place. Partly because of this multiplicity of techniques, and partly due to the large number of samples which must be examined in connection with the manu facture, biological testing, and clinical applica tion of pharmaceutical preparations, this area is particularly appropriate for the introduction of automation. The objective, broadly, is to speed up multiple analyses without the sacrifice of accuracy.

Physical Methods in Modern Chemical Analysis, Volume 2 covers the fundamental principles, the instrumentation or necessary equipment, and applications of selected physical methods. This volume contains five chapters, and deals first with the theory, instrumentation, column features, and applications of high-performance liquid chromatography. The next two chapters survey the principles, experimental aspects, procedures, and specific applications of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. A chapter discusses the technical and theoretical aspects of ion cyclotron resonance, with a special emphasis on its application in gas phase ion and neutral compounds analysis. The last chapter explores the apparatus and experimental procedures in refractive index measurements. This book will be of value to analytical chemists and analytical chemistry researchers.

Modern Aspects of Reflectance Spectroscopy by W. W. Wendlandt Pdf

This volume contains all of the papers presented at the American Chemical Society Symposium on Reflectance Spectroscopy. The Symposium was presented under the sponsorship of the Division of Analytical Chemistry, and was held on September 11 and 12,1967, at the 154th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Chicago, Illinois. The papers presented herein represent a renaissance of interest in reflectance spectroscopy. The techni~ue of reflec tance spectroscopy is not, of course, a new techni~ue, however, it has only been applied to problems of a chemical interest in the last decade or so. The instrumentation for this techni~ue in the ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared regions of the spectrum has been available for many years. New and exciting research is being carried out at the present time to extend these techni~ues to the infrared and far infrared regions as well. It is a pleasure for the Editor to express his gratitude to Drs. John K. Taylor and E. C. Dunlop of the Division of Analytical Chemistry, ACS, for their cooperation in making the Symposium a reality. The assistance of Miss Julie Norris of the University of Houston for her typing and manuscript organi zation skill is greatly appreciated. And lastly, but certainly not the least, the Editor would like to acknowledge the coopera tion of all of the contributors to this volume. Certainly without their cooperation, this Symposium would not have been a success.
