Assessing Childhood Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities by Johnny L. Matson,Frank Andrasik,Michael L. Matson Pdf

Not long ago, conducting child assessment was as simple as stating that “the child gets along with others” or “the child lags behind his peers”. Today’s pediatric psychologists and allied professionals, by contrast, know the critical importance of using accurate measures with high predictive quality to identify pathologies early, form precise case conceptualizations, and provide relevant treatment options. Assessing Childhood Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities provides a wide range of evidence-based methods in an immediately useful presentation from infancy through adolescence. Noted experts offer the most up-to-date findings in the most pressing areas, including: (1) Emerging trends, new technologies, and implementation issues. (2) Interviewing techniques and report writing guidelines. (3) Intelligence testing, neuropsychological assessment, and scaling methods for measuring psychopathology. (4) Assessment of major pathologies, including ADHD, conduct disorder, bipolar disorder, and depression. (5) Developmental disabilities, such as academic problems, the autism spectrum and comorbid pathology, and self-injury. (6) Behavioral medicine, including eating and feeding disorders as well as pain management. This comprehensive volume is an essential resource for the researcher’s library and the clinician’s desk as well as a dependable text for graduate and postgraduate courses in clinical child, developmental, and school psychology. (A companion volume, Treating Childhood Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities, is also available to ensure greater continuity on the road from assessment to intervention to outcome.)

Geometrical Foundations of Continuum Mechanics by Paul Steinmann Pdf

This book illustrates the deep roots of the geometrically nonlinear kinematics of generalized continuum mechanics in differential geometry. Besides applications to first- order elasticity and elasto-plasticity an appreciation thereof is particularly illuminating for generalized models of continuum mechanics such as second-order (gradient-type) elasticity and elasto-plasticity. After a motivation that arises from considering geometrically linear first- and second- order crystal plasticity in Part I several concepts from differential geometry, relevant for what follows, such as connection, parallel transport, torsion, curvature, and metric for holonomic and anholonomic coordinate transformations are reiterated in Part II. Then, in Part III, the kinematics of geometrically nonlinear continuum mechanics are considered. There various concepts of differential geometry, in particular aspects related to compatibility, are generically applied to the kinematics of first- and second- order geometrically nonlinear continuum mechanics. Together with the discussion on the integrability conditions for the distortions and double-distortions, the concepts of dislocation, disclination and point-defect density tensors are introduced. For concreteness, after touching on nonlinear fir st- and second-order elasticity, a detailed discussion of the kinematics of (multiplicative) first- and second-order elasto-plasticity is given. The discussion naturally culminates in a comprehensive set of different types of dislocation, disclination and point-defect density tensors. It is argued, that these can potentially be used to model densities of geometrically necessary defects and the accompanying hardening in crystalline materials. Eventually Part IV summarizes the above findings on integrability whereby distinction is made between the straightforward conditions for the distortion and the double-distortion being integrable and the more involved conditions for the strain (metric) and the double-strain (connection) being integrable. The book addresses readers with an interest in continuum modelling of solids from engineering and the sciences alike, whereby a sound knowledge of tensor calculus and continuum mechanics is required as a prerequisite.

Differential Geometry and Kinematics of Continua by John D Clayton Pdf

This book provides definitions and mathematical derivations of fundamental relationships of tensor analysis encountered in nonlinear continuum mechanics and continuum physics, with a focus on finite deformation kinematics and classical differential geometry. Of particular interest are anholonomic aspects arising from a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into two terms, neither of which in isolation necessarily obeys the integrability conditions satisfied by the gradient of a smooth vector field. The concise format emphasizes clarity and ease of reference, and detailed step-by-step derivations of most analytical results are provided. Contents: IntroductionGeometric FundamentalsKinematics of Integrable DeformationGeometry of Anholonomic DeformationKinematics of Anholonomic DeformationList of SymbolsBibliographyIndex Readership: Researchers in mathematical physics and engineering mechanics. Key Features:Presentation of mathematical operations and examples in anholonomic space associated with a multiplicative decomposition (e.g., of the gradient of motion) is more general and comprehensive than any given elsewhere and contains original ideas and new resultsLine-by-line derivations are frequent and exhaustive, to facilitate practice and enable verification of final resultsGeneral analysis is given in generic curvilinear coordinates; particular sections deal with applications and examples in Cartesian, cylindrical, spherical, and convected coordinates. Indicial and direct notations of tensor calculus enable connections with historic and modern literature, respectivelyKeywords:Differential Geometry;Tensor Analysis;Continuum Mechanics;Kinematics;Deformation;Anholonomic Coordinates

Geometric Methods in Mathematical Physics by G. Kaiser,J.E. Marsden Pdf

For too many students, mathematics consists of facts in a vacuum, to be memorized because the instructor says so, and to be forgotten when the course of study is completed. In this all-too-common scenario, young learners often miss the chance to develop skills-specifically, reasoning skills-that can serve them for a lifetime. The elegant pages of Teaching Mathematical Reasoning in Secondary School Classrooms propose a more positive solution by presenting a reasoning- and discussion-based approach to teaching mathematics, emphasizing the connections between ideas, or why math works. The teachers whose work forms the basis of the book create a powerful record of methods, interactions, and decisions (including dealing with challenges and impasses) involving this elusive topic. And because this approach shifts the locus of authority from the instructor to mathematics itself, students gain a system of knowledge that they can apply not only to discrete tasks relating to numbers, but also to the larger world of people and the humanities. A sampling of the topics covered: Whole-class discussion methods for teaching mathematics reasoning. Learning mathematical reasoning through tasks. Teaching mathematics using the five strands. Classroom strategies for promoting mathematical reasoning. Maximizing student contributions in the classroom. Overcoming student resistance to mathematical conversations. Teaching Mathematical Reasoning in Secondary School Classrooms makes a wealth of cutting-edge strategies available to mathematics teachers and teacher educators. This book is an invaluable resource for researchers in mathematics and curriculum reform and of great interest to teacher educators and teachers.

Material Geometry: Groupoids In Continuum Mechanics by Manuel De Leon,Marcelo Epstein,Victor Manuel Jimenez Pdf

This monograph is the first in which the theory of groupoids and algebroids is applied to the study of the properties of uniformity and homogeneity of continuous media. It is a further step in the application of differential geometry to the mechanics of continua, initiated years ago with the introduction of the theory of G-structures, in which the group G denotes the group of material symmetries, to study smoothly uniform materials. The new approach presented in this book goes much further by being much more general. It is not a generalization per se, but rather a natural way of considering the algebraic-geometric structure induced by the so-called material isomorphisms. This approach has allowed us to encompass non-uniform materials and discover new properties of uniformity and homogeneity that certain material bodies can possess, thus opening a new area in the discipline.
