Modern Music-Inspired Optimization Algorithms for Electric Power Systems by Mohammad Kiani-Moghaddam,Mojtaba Shivaie,Philip D. Weinsier Pdf

In today’s world, with an increase in the breadth and scope of real-world engineering optimization problems as well as with the advent of big data, improving the performance and efficiency of algorithms for solving such problems has become an indispensable need for specialists and researchers. In contrast to conventional books in the field that employ traditional single-stage computational, single-dimensional, and single-homogeneous optimization algorithms, this book addresses multiple newfound architectures for meta-heuristic music-inspired optimization algorithms. These proposed algorithms, with multi-stage computational, multi-dimensional, and multi-inhomogeneous structures, bring about a new direction in the architecture of meta-heuristic algorithms for solving complicated, real-world, large-scale, non-convex, non-smooth engineering optimization problems having a non-linear, mixed-integer nature with big data. The architectures of these new algorithms may also be appropriate for finding an optimal solution or a Pareto-optimal solution set with higher accuracy and speed in comparison to other optimization algorithms, when feasible regions of the solution space and/or dimensions of the optimization problem increase. This book, unlike conventional books on power systems problems that only consider simple and impractical models, deals with complicated, techno-economic, real-world, large-scale models of power systems operation and planning. Innovative applicable ideas in these models make this book a precious resource for specialists and researchers with a background in power systems operation and planning. Provides an understanding of the optimization problems and algorithms, particularly meta-heuristic optimization algorithms, found in fields such as engineering, economics, management, and operations research; Enhances existing architectures and develops innovative architectures for meta-heuristic music-inspired optimization algorithms in order to deal with complicated, real-world, large-scale, non-convex, non-smooth engineering optimization problems having a non-linear, mixed-integer nature with big data; Addresses innovative multi-level, techno-economic, real-world, large-scale, computational-logical frameworks for power systems operation and planning, and illustrates practical training on implementation of the frameworks using the meta-heuristic music-inspired optimization algorithms.

Nature Inspired Optimization for Electrical Power System by Manjaree Pandit,Hari Mohan Dubey,Jagdish Chand Bansal Pdf

This book presents a wide range of optimization methods and their applications to various electrical power system problems such as economical load dispatch, demand supply management in microgrids, levelized energy pricing, load frequency control and congestion management, and reactive power management in radial distribution systems. Problems related to electrical power systems are often highly complex due to the massive dimensions, nonlinearity, non-convexity and discontinuity associated with objective functions. These systems also have a large number of equality and inequality constraints, which give rise to optimization problems that are difficult to solve using classical numerical methods. In this regard, nature inspired optimization algorithms offer an effective alternative, due to their ease of use, population-based parallel search mechanism, non-dependence on the nature of the problem, and ability to accommodate non-differentiable, non-convex problems. The analytical model of nature inspired techniques mimics the natural behaviors and intelligence of life forms. These techniques are mainly based on evolution, swarm intelligence, ecology, human intelligence and physical science.

Combinatorial Optimization of Alternating Current Electric Power Systems by Sid Chi-Kin Chau,Khaled Elbassioni,Majid Khonji Pdf

The electric power grid which has been an indispensable part of our society is being put under increasing pressure to meet the demands of a major surge in global energy consumption. As a result, the power grid needs to undergo transformations to meet the new challenges for a more sustainable society. One of these transformations is the need for continuous optimization in the smart grid so that it can react rapidly to dynamic situations in presence of fluctuating demands and uncertain renewable energy. In the past, the operations of power grid relied on careful a-priori planning, under the assumptions of static demands and predictable circumstances. In the era of dynamic smart grid, self-optimization with adaptive control is more crucial to its operations. Many of the ideas developed by the theoretical computer science community can be applied in such cases. This monograph establishes an interdisciplinary bridge between power systems engineering and theoretical computer science by relating the practical and challenging problems in electric power systems with the modern theoretical tools from computer science. The proper understanding of these hard problems in electric power systems can advance the frontiers of both communities. This monograph introduces Power System Engineers to the concepts and results of approximation algorithms, and applies them to solve electric power systems problems as well as providing Computer Scientists with an exposition of a class of challenging combinatorial problems in electric power systems.

Music-Inspired Harmony Search Algorithm by Zong Woo Geem Pdf

Calculus has been used in solving many scientific and engineering problems. For optimization problems, however, the differential calculus technique sometimes has a drawback when the objective function is step-wise, discontinuous, or multi-modal, or when decision variables are discrete rather than continuous. Thus, researchers have recently turned their interests into metaheuristic algorithms that have been inspired by natural phenomena such as evolution, animal behavior, or metallic annealing. This book especially focuses on a music-inspired metaheuristic algorithm, harmony search. Interestingly, there exists an analogy between music and optimization: each musical instrument corresponds to each decision variable; musical note corresponds to variable value; and harmony corresponds to solution vector. Just like musicians in Jazz improvisation play notes randomly or based on experiences in order to find fantastic harmony, variables in the harmony search algorithm have random values or previously-memorized good values in order to find optimal solution.

Computational Methods for Electric Power Systems by Mariesa L. Crow Pdf

The sheer size of today's power grid and the increasingly stressed conditions under which power systems operate demand the use of computers for analysis and simulations. Yet commercial software packages often fail or give erroneous results when used to simulate stressed systems. To correctly interpret the results, it is therefore imperative that power engineers understand the underlying numerical algorithms of the software. Computational Methods for Electric Power Systems provides a comprehensive study of the various computational methods that form the basis of many analytical studies of power systems. It presents the analytical background of the algorithms used in many commercially available software packages, thereby enabling readers to make more informed decisions in their use of the software and correctly interpret their results. The book furnishes a well-balanced discussion of the theory and applications of the algorithms and supports them with instructional examples and illustrations. As more and more demands are placed on the nation's power systems, predicting and updating the operating status of a network through systems analysis becomes increasingly important. This book builds the background necessary to successfully perform that analysis and prepares readers to cope with any difficulties they may encounter in practice.

Electric Power System Planning by Hossein Seifi,Mohammad Sadegh Sepasian Pdf

The present book addresses various power system planning issues for professionals as well as senior level and postgraduate students. Its emphasis is on long-term issues, although much of the ideas may be used for short and mid-term cases, with some modifications. Back-up materials are provided in twelve appendices of the book. The readers can use the numerous examples presented within the chapters and problems at the end of the chapters, to make sure that the materials are adequately followed up. Based on what Matlab provides as a powerful package for students and professional, some of the examples and the problems are solved in using M-files especially developed and attached for this purpose. This adds a unique feature to the book for in-depth understanding of the materials, sometimes, difficult to apprehend mathematically. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to Power System Planning (PSP) issues and basic principles. As most of PSP problems are modeled as optimization problems, optimization techniques are covered in some details in Chapter 2. Moreover, PSP decision makings are based on both technical and economic considerations, so economic principles are briefly reviewed in Chapter 3. As a basic requirement of PSP studies, the load has to be known. Therefore, load forecasting is presented in Chapter 4. Single bus Generation Expansion Planning (GEP) problem is described in Chapter 5. This study is performed using WASP-IV, developed by International Atomic Energy Agency. The study ignores the grid structure. A Multi-bus GEP problem is discussed in Chapter 6 in which the transmission effects are, somehow, accounted for. The results of single bus GEP is used as an input to this problem. SEP problem is fully presented in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 devotes to Network Expansion Planning (NEP) problem, in which the network is planned. The results of NEP, somehow, fixes the network structure. Some practical considerations and improvements such as multi-voltage cases are discussed in Chapter 9. As NEP study is typically based on some simplifying assumptions and Direct Current Load Flow (DCLF) analysis, detailed Reactive Power Planning (RPP) study is finally presented in Chapter 10, to guarantee acceptable ACLF performance during normal as well as contingency conditions. This, somehow, concludes the basic PSP problem. The changing environments due to power system restructuring dictate some uncertainties on PSP issues. It is shown in Chapter 11 that how these uncertainties can be accounted for. Although is intended to be a text book, PSP is a research oriented topic, too. That is why Chapter 12 is devoted to research trends in PSP. The chapters conclude with a comprehensive example in Chapter 13, showing the step-by-step solution of a practical case.
