A Textbook on Modern Quantum Mechanics by A C Sharma Pdf

Over the course of the past two to three decades, new tools of presentation and mathematical treatment have emerged and the subject matter of quantum mechanics has gone through significant changes. A Textbook on Modern Quantum Mechanics presents the selected elementary, intermediate, and advance topics with rejuvenated approach to the subject matter. Newly merged topics from contemporary physics and chemistry are included in the text as well as solved examples. The book covers: (i) fundamental discoveries that are the foundation of modern quantum mechanics; (ii) solution of Schrödinger’s wave equation for 1D problems and their importance; (iii) matrix and vector formulation of quantum mechanics; (iv) transformations, symmetries, and conservation laws; (v) angular and spin momenta; (vi) solution of Schrödinger equation for central potentials; (vii) time-independent perturbation theory, variational method and WKB approximation; (viii) quantum theory of scattering; (xi) many-particle systems and their quantum mechanical treatments; (x) time-dependent perturbations and the interaction of fields with matter; (xi) relativistic quantum mechanics; and (xii) quantization of fields and the second quantization. Key Features: It provides everything a student needs to know for succeeding at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate studies. It covers most of the topics that are taught under (a) elementary, (b) intermediate, and (c) advance courses of quantum mechanics at universities and colleges. It has detailed and elegant mathematical treatment with contemporary style of interpretation and presentation in simple English. Solved examples and unsolved exercises that are part of each chapter to consolidate the readers' understanding of fundamental concepts. Fundamentals of Quantum Chemistry by Michael P. Mueller Pdf

As quantum theory enters its second century, it is fitting to examine just how far it has come as a tool for the chemist. Beginning with Max Planck’s agonizing conclusion in 1900 that linked energy emission in discreet bundles to the resultant black-body radiation curve, a body of knowledge has developed with profound consequences in our ability to understand nature. In the early years, quantum theory was the providence of physicists and certain breeds of physical chemists. While physicists honed and refined the theory and studied atoms and their component systems, physical chemists began the foray into the study of larger, molecular systems. Quantum theory predictions of these systems were first verified through experimental spectroscopic studies in the electromagnetic spectrum (microwave, infrared and ultraviolet/visible), and, later, by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Over two generations these studies were hampered by two major drawbacks: lack of resolution of spectroscopic data, and the complexity of calculations. This powerful theory that promised understanding of the fundamental nature of molecules faced formidable challenges. The following example may put things in perspective for today’s chemistry faculty, college seniors or graduate students: As little as 40 years ago, force field calculations on a molecule as simple as ketene was a four to five year dissertation project.

Molecular Electronic-Structure Theory by Trygve Helgaker,Poul Jorgensen,Jeppe Olsen Pdf

Ab initio quantum chemistry has emerged as an important tool in chemical research and is appliced to a wide variety of problems in chemistry and molecular physics. Recent developments of computational methods have enabled previously intractable chemical problems to be solved using rigorous quantum-mechanical methods. This is the first comprehensive, up-to-date and technical work to cover all the important aspects of modern molecular electronic-structure theory. Topics covered in the book include: * Second quantization with spin adaptation * Gaussian basis sets and molecular-integral evaluation * Hartree-Fock theory * Configuration-interaction and multi-configurational self-consistent theory * Coupled-cluster theory for ground and excited states * Perturbation theory for single- and multi-configurational states * Linear-scaling techniques and the fast multipole method * Explicity correlated wave functions * Basis-set convergence and extrapolation * Calibration and benchmarking of computational methods, with applications to moelcular equilibrium structure, atomization energies and reaction enthalpies. Molecular Electronic-Structure Theory makes extensive use of numerical examples, designed to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of each method treated. In addition, statements about the usefulness and deficiencies of the various methods are supported by actual examples, not just model calculations. Problems and exercises are provided at the end of each chapter, complete with hints and solutions. This book is a must for researchers in the field of quantum chemistry as well as for nonspecialists who wish to acquire a thorough understanding of ab initio molecular electronic-structure theory and its applications to problems in chemistry and physics. It is also highly recommended for the teaching of graduates and advanced undergraduates.

A Modern Approach to Quantum Mechanics by John S. Townsend Pdf

Inspired by Richard Feynman and J.J. Sakurai, A Modern Approach to Quantum Mechanics allows lecturers to expose their undergraduates to Feynman's approach to quantum mechanics while simultaneously giving them a textbook that is well-ordered, logical and pedagogically sound. This book covers all the topics that are typically presented in a standard upper-level course in quantum mechanics, but its teaching approach is new. Rather than organizing his book according to the historical development of the field and jumping into a mathematical discussion of wave mechanics, Townsend begins his book with the quantum mechanics of spin. Thus, the first five chapters of the book succeed in laying out the fundamentals of quantum mechanics with little or no wave mechanics, so the physics is not obscured by mathematics. Starting with spin systems it gives students straightfoward examples of the structure of quantum mechanics. When wave mechanics is introduced later, students should perceive it correctly as only one aspect of quantum mechanics and not the core of the subject.
