Mome Vol. 4 by various Pdf

The fourth volume of Mome includes the following: R. Kikuo Johnson (Night Fisher) contributes a series of comic strips created for a gallery show in New York City that could be mistaken for a forgotten classic from the Sunday Funnies circa 1935; John Pham's "221 Sycamore Street," an ongoing graphic novel about three very strange people who board in a two-story house, presented in a unique three-color process; Paul Hornschemeier's "Life with Mr. Dangerous," a full-color narrative about a young woman who struggles to define a life outside of the example her mother provides, spending far too much time watching a cartoon called "Mr. Dangerous"; David Heatley (Deadpan, McSweeney's) weaves a surreal, layered graphic novel around the inhabitants of Overpeck, a city he conceived in a dream; and Andrice Arp's (Hi-Horse) retelling of ancient Japanese fairy tales in a lovely two-color format. The issue also features new work by Anders Nilsen (in full-color), Jeffrey Brown (of Clumsy, Big Head!, and McSweeney's fame), Kurt Wolfgang (Where Hats Go), Gabrielle Bell (Scheherazade), Jonathan Bennett (Esoteric Tales), Martin Cendreda (Dang!), Sophie Crumb (Belly Button Comix), and Tim Hensley (Weird Tales of the Ramones).

The fifth volume of Mome includes the following: Tim Hensley (Weird Tales of the Ramones) returns for the first time since the third volume with the first-installment of his first book-length story, titled "Gropius," which tells the story of teen millionaire Wally Gropius, who will be disinherited unless he marries the saddest girl on earth; Martin Cendreda depicts a mostly wordless, surreal adventure starring three peculiar musicians, and what happens when they get together to make music; Kurt Wolfgang delivers "Nothing Eve.," a story about the day before the end of the world; David Heatley (Deadpan, McSweeney's) contributes several short "portrait comics"; Paul Hornschemeier continues "Life with Mr. Dangerous," a full-color narrative about a young woman who struggles to define a life outside of the example her mother provides, spending far too much time watching a cartoon called "Mr. Dangerous"; Andrice Arp (Hi-Horse) contributes another retelling of ancient Japanese fairy tales in a lovely two-color format. The issue also features an interview with Anrice Arp, conducted by Gary Groth, and new work by Anders Nilsen (in full-color), Jeffrey Brown (of Clumsy, Big Head!, and McSweeney's fame), Gabrielle Bell (Scheherazade), Jonathan Bennett (Esoteric Tales), and Sophie Crumb (Belly Button Comix).

Coming Home? Vol. 1 by Sharif Gemie Pdf

The wars of the twentieth century uprooted people on a previously unimaginable scale to the extent that being a refugee became an increasingly widespread experience. With the arrival of refugees, governments of host countries had to mediate between divided national populations: some wished to welcome those arriving in search of refuge; others preferred a strategy of exclusion or even expulsion. At the same time, refugees had to manage conflicts of the self as they responded to the loss of nationhood, families, socio-political networks, material goods, and arguably also a sense of belonging or home. While return migration was usually perceived by governments and refugees alike as the best solution to the dilemmas of forced displacement, consensus about the timing and dynamics of how this would actually occur was very difficult to achieve. In practice, the return of refugees to their countries of origin rarely, if ever, produced a wholly satisfactory outcome. Conflicts clearly resulted in forced displacement, but it is equally true that forced displacement created conflicts. The complex inter-relationship of conflict, return migration and the sometimes chimerical, but still compelling, search for a sense of home is the central preoccupation of the contributors to the two volumes of the Coming Home? series. Scholars from history, literature, cultural studies and sociology explore the tensions between nation-states and migrants as they have anticipated, implemented or challenged the process of return migration during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This book begins with Western Europe and progresses to Central and Eastern Europe from the period of the Spanish Civil War to the Cold War era, whilst the second volume – Coming home? Vol. 2: Conflict and Postcolonial Return Migration in the Context of France and North Africa – shifts the focus to the colonial and post-colonial framework of the French-North African nexus. What emerges from the two volumes of essays is that, as ambiguous and sometimes ambivalent as home could appear, it was nonetheless central to migrants’ preoccupations about returning.

Women in Eighteenth-Century Scotland by Deborah Simonton Pdf

The eighteenth century looms large in the Scottish imagination. It is a century that saw the doubling of the population, rapid urbanisation, industrial growth, the political Union of 1707, the Jacobite Rebellions and the Enlightenment - events that were intrinsic to the creation of the modern nation and to putting Scotland on the international map. The impact of the era on modern Scotland can be seen in the numerous buildings named after the luminaries of the period - Adam Smith, David Hume, William Robertson - the endorsement of Robert Burns as the national poet/hero, the preservation of the Culloden battlefield as a tourist attraction, and the physical geographies of its major towns. Yet, while it is a century that remains central to modern constructions of national identity, it is a period associated with men. Until recently, the history of women in eighteenth-century Scotland, with perhaps the honourable exception of Flora McDonald, remained unwritten. Over the last decade however, research on women and gender in Scotland has flourished and we have an increasingly full picture of women's lives at all social levels across the century. As a result, this is an appropriate moment to reflect on what we know about Scottish women during the eighteenth century, to ask how their history affects the traditional narratives of the period, and to reflect on the implications for a national history of Scotland and Scottish identity. Divided into three sections, covering women's intimate, intellectual and public lives, this interdisciplinary volume offers articles on women's work, criminal activity, clothing, family, education, writing, travel and more. Applying tools from history, art anthropology, cultural studies, and English literature, it draws on a wide-range of sources, from the written to the visual, to highlight the diversity of women's experiences and to challenge current male-centric historiographies.
