Ronnie Martin was at Monkey Nuts, a Monterey bar, enjoying a typical girl's night out with her best gal pal Kiki. But the ordinary evening transformed into anything but when Ronnie's long-dead, much-loved grandmother paid her a visit! Naturally, Ronnie makes every attempt to convince herself that the vision was just the result of too many glasses of beer. However, her grandmother's spirit was no hallucination and she wasn't just stopping by for a chat-she wants Ronnie to solve the mystery of her murder. Her loving husband is skeptical about these visits from the other side, but Ronnie can't let her grandmother down. The trouble is, the closer she gets to the truth, the more she realizes that she isn't the only one doing the hunting. With her grandmother's mysterious killer after her, will Ronnie uncover the mysteries of the past in time to save herself in this spine-tingling, jaw-dropping, supernatural mystery?

The Man in the Monkeynut Coat by Kersten T. Hall Pdf

Sir Isaac Newton once declared that his momentous discoveries were only made thanks to having 'stood on the shoulders of giants'. The same might also be said of the scientists James Watson and Francis Crick. Their discovery of the structure of DNA was, without doubt, one of the biggest scientific landmarks in history and, thanks largely to the success of Watson's best-selling memoir 'The Double Helix', there might seem to be little new to say about this story. But much remains to be said about the particular 'giants' on whose shoulders Watson and Crick stood. Of these, the crystallographer Rosalind Franklin, whose famous X-ray diffraction photograph known as 'Photo 51' provided Watson and Crick with a vital clue, is now well recognised. Far less well known is the physicist William T. Astbury who, working at Leeds in the 1930s on the structure of wool for the local textile industry, pioneered the use of X-ray crystallography to study biological fibres. In so doing, he not only made the very first studies of the structure of DNA culminating in a photo almost identical to Franklin's 'Photo 51', but also founded the new science of 'molecular biology'. Yet whilst Watson and Crick won the Nobel Prize, Astbury has largely been forgotten. The Man in the Monkeynut Coat tells the story of this neglected pioneer, showing not only how it was thanks to him that Watson and Crick were not left empty-handed, but also how his ideas transformed biology leaving a legacy which is still felt today.

Historical Common Names of Great Plains Plants Volume I: Historical Names (paperback) by Elaine Nowick Pdf

Containing thousands of entries of both vernacular and scientific names of Great Plains plants, the literature that informs this exhaustive listing spans nearly 300 years. Author Elaine Nowick has drawn from sources as diverse as Linnaeus, Lewis and Clark, and local university extension publications to compile the gamut of practical, and often fanciful, common plant names used over the years. Each common name is accompanied by a definitive scientific name with references and authority information. Interspersed with scientifically-correct botanical line drawings, the entries are written in standard ICBN format, making this a useful volume for scholars as well as lay enthusiasts alike. Volume 1 presents, in alphabetical order, all the historical common names of plants recorded in Great Plains flora, herbaria, and botanical collections, together with the scientific names of species to which those common names have been applied.

International Poisonous Plants Checklist by D. Jesse Wagstaff Pdf

Knowledge of plant toxicity has always been important, but the information has not always been reliable. Now, increasing international trade is drawing attention to the inadequacy of regional information and highlighting the geographical fragmentation and notorious discrepancies of thinly documented information. The international community of safety regulators, toxicologists, and poison control personnel requires a single reference compiled of verifiable, primary source reports of common poisonous plants. Intended for just that purpose, International Poisonous Plant Checklist: An Evidence-Based Reference successfully addresses the deficiencies and gaps in the current literature. Using accepted botanic names, the book defines the known set of toxic vascular plants. The use of botanic names satisfies the need for an international standard of identity to support worldwide communication and commerce. Also, taxonomy based on common ancestry and genetic connections provides a rational basis for studying and using plant relationships. The author supports toxicity information with references to the primary literature. Each entry includes referenced citations supporting the toxicity of the plant, symptoms and circumstances of toxic exposure, dosage and potency, chemical analysis, botany, pharmacology, mechanism and metabolism, and control. Finally, the book cross-references selected synonyms and common names. The checklist is organized alphabetically with two types of entries. The main entry documents the toxic plants themselves and a secondary entry lists selected synonyms and common names cross-referenced to the main entries. Including virtually all common animal feed plants, human food plants, and many plants that are sources of herbal products and dietary supplements, tonics, and therapeutic agents, this timely checklist compiles and verifies the known data on toxic vascular plants from around the world.

A Pocketful of Monkey-Nuts by Joyce Taylor Pdf

ÿ Joyce Taylor grew up on the banks of the Severn in the years during and after the Second World War. Her home town of Sharpness was then a thriving port with cargoes arriving on every tide from all over the world, and as the daughter of a docker she had only to look at her father?s clothes when he came home from work to see what the latest ship had brought in, from flour and timber to chocolate, grain, nuts, sugar and fruit. As Joyce grew up she was expected to pull her weight around the house looking after the goats and hens, and by the age of seventeen she was delivering milk to outlying farms and cottages in all weathers using a pony and trap. Now entering her 80s, Joyce has painted an enchanting portrait of family life in a rural English community in the 1930s and 40s.
