Sphagnum Mosses of Eastern Canada by Gilles Ayotte,Line Rochefort Pdf

Sphagnum mosses are small plants of the division of Bryophyta that are widespread and abundant in peatlands and several other types of wetlands. About sixty species of Sphagnum mosses are known for the territories of Quebec, Labrador and the Maritimes (with the exception of the island of Newfoundland). However, it can be laborious to identify these plants to the species taxonomic level. This book provides a unique dichotomous key for a visual identification of Sphagnum mosses that will help to demystify the lingo used in botany. To make it easier for identifiers, it also presents ways to recognize species in the field, notes about their habitats, and distribution maps. This document will be useful to ecologists, foresters, biologists and geographers involved in environmental management, as well as stakeholders responsible for managing the natural resources they protect or exploit. This guide is also intended as a tool for any naturalist or botanist working east of the Rockies, or in the Canadian Arctic. The botanists of the United States will find this document useful for the Sphagnum mosses found in Northern States or in the region of New England.

Mosses and Other Bryophytes by William McLagan Malcolm,Nancy Malcolm Pdf

"An illustrated glossary of terms that are used to describe mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. Written in informal prose, it's intended to be an everyday reference for not only bryology and botany students, but also gardeners and anybody who's interested in plants. The second edition has half again as many pages (over 330) and illustrations (nearly 1400) as the first edition did, and two-thirds of those illustrations are new. Over 530 species of bryophytes are illustrated. Also, an appendix explains how to photograph bryophytes without a camera."--NHBS Environment Bookstore.

Forest Ecosystems in the Alaskan Taiga by K. van Cleve,F.S.III. Chapin,P.W. Flanagan,L.A. Viereck,C.T. Dyrness Pdf

The information presented in this book is the result of combined research efforts of scientists at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, the Institute of Northern Forestry, USDA Forest Service, and the Systems Ecology Research Group, San Diego State University. The objective of the volume is to present a synthetic overview of structure and function of taiga forest ecosystems in interior Alaska. The data base for this work has appeared in earlier published articles including the special issue of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research Volume 13:5 (1983). Stimulus for this book was a conference held in Fairbanks from June 10-14, 1983. The papers presented at the conference were fore runners of the chapters in this book. We invited 19 scientists from North America and England to critique our research and synthesis efforts. Six of these people were asked to write introductory chapters for each section of the book. Formal presentation sessions, combined with field trips to research sites, introduced the invitees to the primary and secondary successional ecosystems with which we were dealing. A major wildfire, only 24 km from the University campus, was contained the week prior to the conference and one field trip provided graphic evidence of fire impact in subarctic forests. The conference conveners regretted that it was not possible to host a similar meeting during synthesis efforts in mid-January.
