The description of Swift's combination toy blocks printed on the cover of the issue in hand matches that found in the publisher's catalogue, except that the cover advertisement states that set no. 2 contains 52 blocks, while the publisher's catalogue describes set. no. 2 as having 50 blocks. This information is repeated in the catalogue for 1876-77, and by 1879, set no. 2 is advertised as containing 100 blocks. Last page blank. Cover printed in color. Cover design signed by Edward P. From the mid-16th century nursery rhymes begin to be recorded in English plays, and most popular rhymes date from the 17th and 18th centuries.The first English collections, Tommy Thumb's Song Book and a sequel, Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book, were published by Mary Cooper in 1744. Publisher John Newbery's stepson, Thomas Carnan, was the first to use the term Mother Goose for nursery rhymes when he published a compilation of English rhymes, Mother Goose's Melody, or, Sonnets for the Cradle (London, 1780).
