Buried Treasures in Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, N. Y. by Richard Reisem Pdf

"Through biographic sketches of more than 600 interesting permanent residents of Mount Hope Cemetery, this book becomes a fascinating history of Rochester, New York, America's first boomtown in the early 1800s, the flour-milling capital of the world, the third largest clothing manufacturing center in the U.S, and a horticultural phenomenon. Kodak became the world's photography leader. This was the city of Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. A Rochesterian founded Western Union Telegraph Company; another Rochesterian started Xerox. Bausch and Lomb created one of the great optical companies. Exxon Mobil was started here as Vacuum Oil Company. A University of Rochester professor founded the science of anthropology. Buffalo Bill Cody created his Wild West Show in Rochester. The voting machine was invented here, as was the machine gun, the internal combustion motorcar, and the fish hatchery. A persistent Hartwell Carver instituted the transcontinental railroad. Frank Gannett launched his publishing empire here. This book brings it all to live, from the tavern owner who operated the best oyster bar in town, to the man who persuaded Czar Alexander to sell Alaska to the U.S."--Back cover

Broome, Latourette, and Mercereau Families of New York and Connecticut by Barbara Broome Semans,Letitia Broom Schwartz Pdf

Broome, LaTourette, and Mercereau Families of New York and Connecticut If you have a connection to Staten Island, New York, you probably have a connection to these families. The LaTourette and Mercereau families came separately to Staten Island from France in the late 17th century. They were French Huguenots who left France for religious freedom and were among the small number of early settlers on Staten Island. There were a lot of intermarriages between the LaTourette and Mercereau families and with the other Staten Island families, such as Broome, Chadrayne, Corsen, Doucinet, Lake, Poillon, and Vanderbilt. Later generations went further afield, though not very far to Manhattan Island (New York City), Long Island, upstate New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut to include Barnard, Chetwood, Fay, Gould, Jarvis, LaGrange, Phelps, Platt, and Smith. And still later, they included other families in other states. This book tells the stories of these early American settlers and their descendants. Even if you dont know of a connection to Staten Island, you may find a connection to a later descendant. And you will learn about early difficulties and successes of these pioneers.

Explorer's Guide Erie Canal: A Great Destination: Exploring New York's Great Canals by Deborah Williams Pdf

The Erie Canal: Great Destinations is the first comprehensive travel guide to New York State Canals and the communities and attractions found along them. Each chapter covers one canal, providing historical background as well as information on wineries, canal museums, restaurants, lodging, canal cruises and bike paths in all the major cities, many of the small towns and villages, and the two biggest Finger Lakes. The guide offers separate sections on Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse, Utica, and Rochester and their outlying areas, as well as a chapter on Niagara Falls. With coverage of three smaller canals in the region (the Oswego, Champlain, and Cayuga-Seneca) this is undoubtedly the most extensive guide to the canalways of the state.

Some Descendants of John Thomas of Jamestown, Rhode Island by Hollis A. Thomas, MD Pdf

In 1636, Roger Williams, recently banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony because of his religious beliefs, established a settlement at the head of Narragansett Bay that he named “Providence.” This small colony soon became a sanctuary for those seeking to escape religious persecution. Within a few years, a royal land patent and charter resulted in the formation of the “Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations,” which incorporated Williams’ original settlement and espoused his tenets of freedom of religion and separation of church and state. During the ensuing decades, thousands of Baptists, Quakers, Jews, and Huguenots relocated to Rhode Island from other New England colonies, the British Islands, and Europe in search of religious freedom. One such individual, John Thomas, an immigrant from Wales, made significant contributions to early settlements at Jamestown on Conanicut Island and at Wickford on the nearby mainland of Rhode Island. He was the first town constable of Jamestown in 1679, and later owned hundreds of acres of land in the towns of North and South Kingstown. This fully indexed work traces and sketches the lives of his descendants, many of whom were at the forefront of the great American westward migration, and represents the most comprehensive compilation of them to date. It is the result of twenty years of extensive research and includes detailed information from military pension archives, will and estate records, agricultural data, county histories, and migration patterns that far exceeds the standard for genealogical works of this scope and magnitude. It is important for us to remember those who helped shape our nation. This work provides valuable information for those who are interested in this family and its evolution in America.
