The Nature of Socialist Economies by Peter Murrell Pdf

What are the sources of the well-known differences in the performance of capitalist and socialist economic systems? Peter Murrell argues that the Schumpeterian model has far more power to answer this question than does the neoclassical theory generally used for that purpose. The neoclassical theory focuses on the absence of a price system and the inability of a centralized system to allocate resources efficiently, while the Schumpeterian model emphasizes the rigidity of institutions and policies in socialist economies and their lack of mechanisms either to create new institutions or to identify and to foster the growth of the most efficient organizations (including multinational corporations). In a work that will have profound consequences for the analysis of economic reform in socialist economies, Murrell compares the predictions of these two models against data summarizing foreign trade performance and finds the Schumpeterian model clearly superior. Combining international trade theory and econometric techniques, the author develops new methods of comparative economic analysis. These methods provide new information on the values of eleven resource endowments implicit in trade, the degree to which the socialist countries fit standard models of trade, the effect of multinational corporations on trade, and myriad other features of economic performance. Multinationals and East-West Relations by J Wilczynski Pdf

WHEN in the future historians examine the second half of the twentieth century, they will no doubt identify the accelerated inter-nationalization of production as a landmark comparable with the Industrial Revolution. In this process multinational enterprises have been leading actors in the past twenty-five years and are certain to continue to be so in the next quarter-century. In 1975 the sales of the Western multinational corporations represented one-fifth of the Gross National Product of all capitalist countries. If their growth is maintained at the same rate as over the period 195o-75, by the end of the century this share will be nearly one-half and the whole capitalist economy may very well be dominated by some 200 giant corporations of which three-quarters may be American-based.

Enterprise Guidance in Eastern Europe by David Granick Pdf

The sixties were a decade of major reform in the guidance of industry in the socialist countries of Eastern Europe. In this comparative study of industrial management, the different directions taken by reform in the German Democratic Republic, Hungary, and Yugoslavia are examined against the pattern shown by Romania, a country in which no significant reform has occurred. The author focuses on the methods used to coordinate enterprises in the early 1970s. The book is the product of a remarkable opportunity: eleven months of interviews in the four countries. Those interviewed were mainly middle and upper managers of enterprises, but also include officials of ministries, planning commissions, banks, trade unions, and national Communist parties. The resulting data made possible new interpretations of enterprise management in Eastern Europe. Originally published in 1976. The Globalization of Industry and Innovation in Eastern Europe by Christian von Hirschhausen,Jürgen Bitzer Pdf

'The topic is important and neglected and has major implications for the types of industrial policy that make any sense in transition countries. The clear message of this book is that protective science and technology policies would, for the most part, be a total waste of money. What is needed now is internationalization and a demand-driven approach, exactly the opposite of the former nationally based and supply-led systems existing under socialism.' - Paul Hare, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, UK 'Here is a book that goes beyond the abstractions and platitudes of conventional "transition economics" to look at what is really happening on the ground in the post-socialist countries of Eastern Europe . . . The Globalization of Industry and Innovation in Eastern Europe presents a provocative but richly documented assessment of the central dynamic issues facing the East European economies today.' - David Dyker, SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research, University of Sussex, UK In this important book, industrial and enterprise reform over the last decade in Eastern Europe is critically reviewed in light of increasing Eastern integration into the global economy. The authors argue for the further globalization of Eastern European enterprise networks as a condition for recovery and growth in the region. Empirical evidence is provided from five industrial sectors (car industry, telecommunication, shipbuilding, computers, software), including case studies and international comparisons.

Socialism and International Economic Order by Elisabeth L. Tamedly Pdf

The theory of international economic order is concerned with two basically different types of human relationships: those that belong to the private sphere of the individual and which are amenable to the rule of law (the "dominium") and those that are backed by sovereign national power (the "imperium"). It is very important to know which fields of human activity are subject, within a given state, to imperium and which are left to the regulating influence of market values and private law.

Eastern Europe and the New International Economic Order by Ervin Laszlo,Joel Kurtzman Pdf

Eastern Europe and the New International Economic Order examines the views, positions, and practices of Eastern European nations regarding the New International Economic Order (NIEO). Topics covered include technology transfer from CMEA countries to the Third World and the perspectives of Yugoslavia, Romania, and Hungary regarding the NIEO. This volume is comprised of five chapters and begins with an analysis of the NIEO from the perspective of CMEA countries, paying particular attention to the NIEO's political objectives and impediments to the realization of the NIEO goals. Some strategies for overcoming setbacks in the implementation of NIEO principles are outlined. The next chapter looks at the principles of technology transfer from socialist countries to developing countries, along with obstacles to the export of technology in CMEA countries and the inflow of technology in the Third World. Incentives for increasing technology transfer are also discussed. The final chapters consider the positions and policies of Yugoslavia, Romania, and Hungary toward the NIEO. This book will be a useful resource for economists and economic policymakers.

Partners in East-West Economic Relations by Zbigniew M. Fallenbuchl,Carl H. McMillan Pdf

Partners in East-West Economic Relations: The Determinants of Choice covers the proceedings of an international conference of the same name held at Montebello, Quebec on April 26-29, 1978. This conference brings together various professionals to address contemporary international economic relations issues. One of the three major issues tackled in this compilation is the reintegration of the economics of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe into the international division of labor. This compendium also studies the determinants of the choice of partners in East-West relations at the national and subnational levels. The last major topic concerned in this selection is the similarities and differences between partnerships in the East-West and North-South contexts. This compendium will be of interest to those interested in economics and related disciplines.
