Multiwavelength AGN Surveys and Studies (IAU S304) by Areg M. Mickaelian,David B. Sanders Pdf

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are among the most interesting astrophysical objects in the Universe. IAU Symposium 304, dedicated to marking the centenary of B. E. Markarian's birth, addresses the most important questions in this area: understanding the possible evolutionary and/or physical connections between the different classes of AGN; the relation of AGN to their host galaxies; and understanding the true fraction of heavily obscured AGN in order to determine the true AGN luminosity function and its variation with redshift. This volume's topics include: historical spectral and colorimetric surveys, multiwavelength AGN surveys, AGN statistics, unification and other models of AGN, AGN feedback in galaxies and clusters, their host galaxies and environments, binary AGN and merging supermassive black holes, AGN variability, and future large projects. This fresh summary of AGN surveys is especially useful for researchers engaged in this exciting field and helping them plan for future surveys and observations.

New Horizons from Multi-Wavelength Sky Surveys by Brian J. McLean,Daniel A. Golombek,Jeffrey J.E. Hayes,Harry E. Payne Pdf

Large area sky surveys are now a reality in the radio, IR, optical and X-ray passbands. In the next few years, new surveys using optical, UV and IR mosaic cameras with high throughput digital detectors will expand the dynamic range and accuracy of photometry and astrometry of objects over a significant fraction of the entire sky. Parallel X-ray and radio surveys over the same areas will produce astronomical image and spectroscopic databases of unprecedented size and quality. The combined data sets will provide significant new constraints on star formation, stellar dynamics, Galactic structure, the evolution of galaxies and large scale structure, as well as new opportunities to identify rare objects in the solar system and the Galaxy. Large area surveys have formidable data acquisition, processing, archiving, and data distribution demands and this meeting provided a forum for sharing experiences amongst workers specializing in different wavebands as well as discussing how multiband observations can reveal fundamental relationships in our understanding of the Universe.

A Multi-Wavelength Census of Star Formation at Redshift Z~2 by Naveen Reddy Pdf

We examine the census of star-forming galaxies and their extinction properties at redshift z 2, when a large fraction of the stellar mass in the universe formed. We find a good agreement between the X-ray, radio, and de-reddened UV estimates of the average star formation rate (SFR) for our sample of z 2 galaxies of 50 Msun/yr, indicating that the locally calibrated SFR relations appear to be statistically valid from redshifts 1.5

Reports on Astronomy 2003-2005 (IAU XXVIA) by Oddbjorn Engvold Pdf

Transactions XXVIA of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) provides a comprehensive and authoritative review of what has been achieved in astronomy during the years 2003 to 2005. The insightful and up-to-date reviews are written by the Presidents and Chairpersons of the IAU's different Divisions, Commissions and Working Groups and each focuses on a different subject area. Topics covered in this wide-ranging volume include: fundamental astronomy; the Sun and heliosphere; planetary systems sciences; stars; variable stars; interstellar matter; the Galactic system; galaxies and the Universe; optical and infrared techniques; radio astronomy; space and high energy astrophysics; and other IAU activities. The reviews are written at a level suitable for colleagues in the same field, but they will also be useful for students and researchers wishing to gain an overview beyond their own research area.

The Interplay Among Black Holes, Stars and ISM in Galactic Nuclei (IAU S222) by International Astronomical Union. Symposium Pdf

How massive are the largest and smallest nuclear black holes in galaxies? Why are the masses of nuclear black holes proportional to those of their host galaxy bulges? How is nuclear activity triggered? What are the observational signatures of such processes? What are the connections between the active nucleus, stars and interstellar medium in galaxies? Answers to these questions are addressed in this book, which presents a compilation of 191 works covering recent observations from X-rays to radio wavelengths, as well as theoretical modeling of accretion disks, stellar populations and galaxy and black hole evolution. This volume presents the nuclear activity as a phase in the life of a galaxy, which is intimately connected to the evolution of its stars and interstellar medium. It brings together recent developments in topics covering most aspects of galaxy evolution, and is a valuable resource for astronomers and graduate students working in extragalactic astronomy.

AGN Feedback in Galaxy Formation by Vincenzo Antonuccio-Delogu,Joseph Silk Pdf

During the past decade, convincing evidence has been accumulated concerning the effect of active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity on the internal and external environment of their host galaxies. Featuring contributions from well-respected researchers in the field, and bringing together work by specialists in both galaxy formation and AGN, this volume addresses a number of key questions about AGN feedback in the context of galaxy formation. The topics covered include downsizing and star-formation time scales in massive elliptical galaxies, the connection between the epochs of supermassive black hole growth and galaxy formation and the question of whether AGN and star formation coexist. Authors also discuss key challenging computational problems, including jet-interstellar/intergalactic medium interactions, and both jet- and merging-induced star formation. Suitable for researchers and graduate students in astrophysics, this volume reflects the engaging and lively discussions taking place in this emerging field of research.

Multi-Wavelength Continuum Emission of AGN by International Astronomical Union. Symposium Pdf

(Note: the title actually, but erroneously, shown on the dust jacket, cover, and title page is Multi-Wavelength Continuum Emission of AGN, which is really only the heading of the first section of the volume. Because the correct, but omitted, title subsumes the erroneous title, Book News uses it in order to most accurately establish the reach of the volume.) The proceedings, then, of IAU Symposium No. 159, held in Geneva, Switzerland, August-September 1993, contain almost all of the presentations given at the conference both as posters and as oral invited and contributed papers. They address topics in multi- wavelength continuum emission of AGN; new observations of AGN with specific instruments; variability; correlations between emission components; AGN physics and models; unified schemes and relations with other types of objects; continuum studies; emission processes; x-rays and higher energies; variability; radio emission (maps); line studies; disk structure and emission; and statistical studies and evolution. Black Holes by Mario Livio,Anton M. Koekemoer Pdf

Black holes, once considered to be of purely theoretical interest, play an important role in observational astronomy and a range of astrophysical phenomena. This volume is based on a meeting held at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which explored the many aspects of black hole astrophysics. Written by world experts in areas of stellar-mass, intermediate-mass and supermassive black holes, these review papers provide an up-to-date overview of developments in this field. Topics discussed range from black hole entropy and the fate of information to supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies, and from the possibility of producing black holes in collider experiments to the measurements of black hole spins. This is an invaluable resource for researchers currently working in the field, and for graduate students interested in this active and growing area of research.
