Muscle Transplantation by G. Freilinger,J. Holle,B.M. Carlson Pdf

It was a long and troublesome history but an inspiring and excltmg one too-from the time of Zielonko, a Russian pathologist who in 1874 first transplanted muscles, to the present day microneurovascular muscle graft. Today we know that for functional recovery of muscle tissue vascularisation and neurotisation are of equal importance. With the establishment of microsurgery of small vessels and nerves, its application for myopias tic operations has gained increasing interest. It was my intention to bring together leading authorities from all over the world in the field of muscle transplantation. Open questions and unsolved problems had to be discussed between research workers in the basic medical sciences and our clinical colleagues; in this way progress can best be accomplished. This publication is the result of the "Vienna Muscle Symposium" (June 13-14, 1980). It gives an up-to-date viewpoint and should act as a stimulus to all who are interested in this particular field. I wish to express my sincere thanks to those who have contributed to this publication, to the two co-editors J. Holle and B. M. Carlson for their effective cooperation, and to Springer-Verlag Wien for their prompt and most efficient work.

Yearbook of Cell and Tissue Transplantation 1996–1997 by R.P. Lanza,B.B. Chick Pdf

Cell and tissue transplantation is one of the most exciting and rapidly expanding areas in medicine. This first edition of the Yearbook of Cell and Tissue Transplantation summarizes the latest advances in this revolutionary field, including developments in tissue engineering and transplantation of hybrid organs and tissues, while reviewing those data which, while not new, add to the usefulness of this work as a comprehensive reference. The justification for yearbooks is greater than ever as we approach the third millennium, overwhelmed with information. In view of the important and rapid changes occurring in this area, a new edition of this yearbook will appear periodically. The editors' careers at Harvard Medical School guarantee the quality of this book. The authors, too, are uniformly drawn from the highest rank of an unusually dedicated and heterogeneous professional group. from the Foreword by Thomas E. Starzl, Honorary President, The Cell Transplant Society: `No major topic in the global field is left uncovered ... the result will be a feast for those already well informed, and a life raft for those who are not.'

Experimental Transplantation Models in Small Animals by B. R. Christie Pdf

A guide to small animal use in transplantation research, for biomedical researchers. In most cases, the techniques were developed by the chapter authors. While some chapters are of general interest, other deal with specific procedures, mostly in rats and mice but with some rabbit work included. In acknowledgment of the ethical aspects of live animal experimentation, the detailed handling of the animals and the description of anesthesia and analgesia are central to many of the chapters. Cellular Transplantation by Craig Halberstadt,Dwaine F. Emerich Pdf

There have been tremendous strides in cellular transplantation in recent years, leading to accepted practice for the treatment of certain diseases, and use for many others in trial phases. The long history of cellular transplantation, or the transfer of cells from one organism or region of the body to another, has been revolutionized by advances in stem cell research, as well as developments in gene therapy. Cellular Transplants: From Lab to Clinic provides a thorough foundation of the basic science underpinning this exciting field, expert overviews of the state-of-the-art, and detailed description of clinical success stories to date, as well as insights into the road ahead. As highlighted by this timely and authoritative survey, scale-up technologies and whole organ transplantation are among the hurdles representing the next frontier. The contents are organized into four main sections, with the first covering basic biology, including transplant immunology, the use of immunosuppressive drugs, stem cell biology, and the development of donor animals for transplantation. The next part looks at peripheral and reconstructive applications, followed by a section devoted to transplantation for diseases of the central nervous system. The last part presents efforts to address the key challenges ahead, such as identifying novel transplantable cells and integrating biomaterials and nanotechnology with cell matrices. Provides detailed description of clinical trials in cell transplantation Review of current therapeutic approaches Coverage of the broad range of diseases addressed by cell therapeutics Discussion of stem cell biology and its role in transplantation

The Plasticity of Skeletal Muscle by Kunihiro Sakuma Pdf

This book discusses recent advances and various topics in plasticity of skeletal muscle from the perspectives of morphology, biological function, and clinical applications. Skeletal muscle is a highly plastic organ to adapt to environmental various demands, appears to endocrine various myokines, which flow into blood to protect the recognizing function of brain and inhibit the appearance of several cancer tumorigenesis. The book deals with current stem-cell based, pharmacological, and nutritional therapies for muscle wasting (sarcopenia, cachexia, and muscular dystrophy). It also explains the roles of biological mediators such as PGC-1, transient receptor potential cation channels (TRPC), and AMPK in modulating muscle function. The functional roles of ubiquitin-proteasome system, autophagy-dependent signaling in muscle homeostasis, ribosome biogenesis, and redox regulation of mechanotransduction to modulate skeletal muscle mass are also covered. It is an essential resource for physicians, researchers, post-docs as well as graduate students in the field of sports science including rehabilitation therapy, exercise physiology, exercise biochemistry, and molecular biology dealing with skeletal muscle.
