Nontimber forest products from southern Alaska (also called special forest products) have been used for millennia as resources vital to the livelihoods and culture of Alaska Natives and, more recently, as subsistence resources for the welfare of all citizens. Many of these products are now being sold, and Alaskans seek additional income opportunities through sustainable harvest and manufacture of such forest resources. We discuss the unique legal, regulatory, land tenure, geographic, vegetation, and climatic context that southern Alaska presents for marketing nontimber forest products; summarize the various species and types of products being harvested; and consider the marketing challenges and opportunities new entrepreneurs will encounter. The information and resources we provide are intended to enhance income opportunities for all Alaskans, while sustaining the organisms harvested, respecting traditional activities, and ensuring equitable access to resources.

This study provides an overview of nontimber forest products (NTFP) programs on national forests in the United States. We conducted an email survey in 2003 to obtain data on NTFP management activities on national forests across the country. Program characteristics examined in the study included important NTFPs managed on national forests, presence of NTFP coordinators and law enforcement programs on ranger districts, incorporation of NTFPs into forest planning documents, presence of NTFP inventory and monitoring programs, managers views on barriers to and opportunities for including NTFP harvesters in NTFP inventory and monitoring efforts, and managers perceptions of barriers to expanding commercial NTFP harvesting. The data indicate that the agency is constructing a foundation for scientific NTFP management. The study identifies lack of funding and internal administrative capacity as key barriers to adequate incorporation of NTFPs in Forest Service planning, inventory, and monitoring.

This cheery little pamphlet which starts out sounding like "Mushrooms are our friends" gets a bit darker with every page--the last has a "Cut this out and keep it by the phone" label with the numbers for the poison control centers. Inside, there are lovely color illustrations (with no indication of whether or not the item is edible), followed by increasingly alarming instructions about not carrying mushrooms in plastic (makes them sweat and incubate yeast, mold and bacteria), not feeding them to the old, sick or young, and saving a few out of each batch for emergency analysis in case you've guessed wrong.
