My City Speaks by Darren Lebeuf Pdf

A young girl’s exploration of the city she loves. A young girl and her father spend a day in the city, her city, traveling to the places they go together. As they do, the girl, who is visually impaired, describes what she senses in delightfully precise, poetic detail. Her city, she says, “pitters and patters, and drips and drains.” It’s both “smelly” and “sweet.” Her city also speaks, as it “dings and dongs and rattles and roars.” And sometimes, maybe even some of the best times, it just listens. A celebration of all there is to appreciate in our surroundings — just by paying attention!

My Winter City by James Gladstone Pdf

A boy, his father and their dog have a perfect day in a snowy city, illustrated by Governor General’s Literary Award winner Gary Clement. A young boy wakes up in the early light of a winter morning, pulls on his boots and mittens, and steps out into the snowy city with his dad. They trudge through the snow, their dog bounding along beside them, then a slushy, steamy bus ride takes them to the tobogganing hill for some winter fun. The boy describes all the sights and sounds of the day, from the frost in Dad’s beard and the snow “pillows” in the park, to the noisy clunking snow plows and the singing buskers they pass on their way home. That night, the boy lies awake under cozy covers, reflecting on the day, as snow blankets the world outside his window. This is winter in the city. Small in the City by Sydney Smith Pdf

The first picture book that the award-winning Sydney Smith has both written and illustrated is a story about feeling small in the city — and finding your way home. On a snowy day in a big city, a little boy hops off a streetcar and walks through downtown, between office buildings, through parks and down busy streets. Along the way, he provides helpful tips about which alleys make good shortcuts, which trees to climb and where to find a friendly face. All the while, the boy searches for what he has lost ... The first book that award-winning illustrator Sydney Smith has written tells a story of what it means to get lost in the city, travel the wrong path and get caught in bad weather — and to ultimately find your way back home. His beautiful watercolour illustrations alternate between full spreads and small panels, evoking the sometimes overwhelming cacophony of urban sights and sounds, as well as the quiet moments that make all of us feel less small in the city. The Affordable City by Shane Phillips Pdf

From Los Angeles to Boston and Chicago to Miami, US cities are struggling to address the twin crises of high housing costs and household instability. Debates over the appropriate course of action have been defined by two poles: building more housing or enacting stronger tenant protections. These options are often treated as mutually exclusive, with support for one implying opposition to the other. Shane Phillips believes that effectively tackling the housing crisis requires that cities support both tenant protections and housing abundance. He offers readers more than 50 policy recommendations, beginning with a set of principles and general recommendations that should apply to all housing policy. The remaining recommendations are organized by what he calls the Three S’s of Supply, Stability, and Subsidy. Phillips makes a moral and economic case for why each is essential and recommendations for making them work together. There is no single solution to the housing crisis—it will require a comprehensive approach backed by strong, diverse coalitions. The Affordable City is an essential tool for professionals and advocates working to improve affordability and increase community resilience through local action.

My Kind of City by Hank Dittmar Pdf

"Hank lived by the credo, 'first listen, then design'." --Scott Bernstein, Founder and Chief Strategy + Innovation Officer, Center for Neighborhood Technology Hank Dittmar was a globally recognized urban planner, advocate, and policy advisor. He wrote extensively on a wide range of topics, including architectural criticism, community planning, and transportation policy over his long and storied career. In My Kind of City, Dittmar has organized his selected writings into ten sections with original introductions. His observations range on scale from local ("My Favorite Street: Seven Dials, Covent Garden, London") to national ("Post Truth Architecture in the Age of Trump") and global ("Architects are Critical to Adapting our Cities to Climate Change"). Andrés Duany writes of Hank in the book foreword, "He has continued to search for ways to engage place, community and history in order to avoid the tempting formalism of plans." The range of topics covered in My Kind of City reflects the breadth of Dittmar's experience in working for better cities for people. Common themes emerge in the engaging prose including Dittmar's belief that improving our cities should not be left to the "experts"; his appreciation for the beautiful and the messy; and his rare combination of deep expertise and modesty. As Lynn Richards, CEO of Congress for the New Urbanism expresses in the preface, "Hank's writing is smart without being elitist, witty and poetic, succinct and often surprising." My Kind of City captures a visionary planner's spirit, eye for beauty, and love for the places where we live.

A Forest in the City by Andrea Curtis Pdf

This beautiful book of narrative non-fiction looks at the urban forest and dives into the question of how we can live in harmony with city trees. “Imagine a city draped in a blanket of green ... Is this the city you know?” A Forest in the City looks at the urban forest, starting with a bird’s-eye view of the tree canopy, then swooping down to street level, digging deep into the ground, then moving up through a tree’s trunk, back into the leaves and branches. Trees make our cities more beautiful and provide shade but they also fight climate change and pollution, benefit our health and connections to one another, provide food and shelter for wildlife, and much more. Yet city trees face an abundance of problems, such as the abundance of concrete, poor soil and challenging light conditions. So how can we create a healthy environment for city trees? Urban foresters are trying to create better growing conditions, plant diverse species, and maintain trees as they age. These strategies, and more, reveal that the urban forest is a complex system—A Forest in the City shows readers we are a part of it. Includes a list of activities to help the urban forest and a glossary. The ThinkCities series is inspired by the urgency for new approaches to city life as a result of climate change, population growth and increased density. It highlights the challenges and risks cities face, but also offers hope for building resilience, sustainability and quality of life as young people act as advocates for themselves and their communities. My City, My New York by Jeryl Brunner Pdf

What do famous people love to do during their free time in the Big Apple? Like all New Yorkers, even the well-known among them have cherished rituals that connect them to their city in a unique way—favorite restaurants, delis, museums, parks, galleries, landmarks, haunts, and hideaways. For one resident, it may be watching tango dancers on Saturday nights in Central Park; for another, it’s riding a bike over the Brooklyn Bridge to get a slice of Grimaldi’s pepperoni pizza and a view of the Manhattan skyline from across the East River. Perhaps it entails choosing from the many varieties of bread at Rock Hill Bake House in the Union Square Greenmarket or simply walking across 46th Street and ending up at the great Broadway hangout, Angus McIndoe. In a refreshing step beyond the usual travel guides and tourist listings, My City, My New York quotes VIPs and gives readers something truly unique: a chance to experience Manhattan the way its most notable luminary residents do. The activities and establishments included are diverse, often eclectic, and, most-importantly, nonexclusive––you don’t need to be a celebrity to enjoy them. While offering new and creative possibilities for exploration, My City, New York is also a love letter to the Big Apple and will touch even the most jaded New Yorkers. Celebrities include: - Matthew Broderick - Woody Allen - Bette Midler - Joan Rivers - Donald Trump - Chris Noth - Mayor Michael Bloomberg - Alex Rodriguez

My Karst and My City and Other Essays by Scipio Slataper Pdf

Scipio Slataper is one of the most prominent writers from the Italian town of Trieste. Before the onslaught of World War One, Trieste was a unique urban environment and the largest port in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was a financially powerful city and a cosmopolitan centre where Slavic, Germanic, and Italian cultures intersected. Much of Slataper’s oeuvre is highly influenced by Trieste’s cultural complexity and its multi-ethnic environment. Slataper’s major literary achievement, My Karst and My City – a fictionalized, lyrical autobiography, translated here in its entirety – offers a unique example of an Italian modernist narrative, one that is influenced both by Slataper’s collaboration with the Florentine journal La Voce, and by the Germanic and Scandinavian literature that he absorbed while living in Trieste. My Karst and My City, together with the excerpts from his reflections on Ibsen and other critical essays included here, adds a new voice and a different dimension to our understanding of European modernism.

June 4, 2024 brought about what can safely be described as a tectonic shift of sorts in Odisha politics. Naveen Patnaik, who governed the state as Chief Minister since 2000, saw his party – the Biju Janata Dal – lose its grip on power after 24 long years. His legacy, however, is set to endure, much like that of his father, the late Biju Patnaik. Our Cover Story tries to summarize the phenomenon that is Naveen Babu, as he is fondly addressed by many. Music is the universal language of mankind, famous American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote way back in 1835. This holds true even today, decades of evolution and experimentation notwithstanding. June 21 will be observed as World Music Day. In City Lights, we bring you a special feature on the music of Odisha, tracing its journey over the last few decades and how it is changing, thanks to the transformative effect of technology as well as social media. With climate change and environmental sustainability becoming the buzzword, there is a need to take a closer look at some concerns which generally tend to go unnoticed. Among these are diapers and sanitary pads – they take several years to decompose once they end up in landfills. Encouraging the use of eco-friendly material may be a way out to deal with this challenge. Read all about it in City Green. While on the subject of a greener tomorrow, we also look at how cycling promotes the well-being not just of an individual but also the planet as a whole. City Health brings you some interesting insights on this. The CBSE Class 10 and 12 results were announced recently.
