Mystery Mile by Margery Margery Allingham Pdf

Mystery Mile - typical of a great many crime novels of the period - is the presence of a criminal mastermind. Certainly, the mysterious criminal, whose appearance is unknown even to his own henchman, is a staple of detective fiction, from Sherlock Holmes's arch-enemy Moriarty to James Bond's Goldfinger (or most of his other opponents, come to think of it). In Mystery Mile, Campion finds himself up against a person named Simister. At least, that is the name he is known by, both to the police and to his own criminal associates. The police aren't even sure he actually exists; they point out that Simister has been active far longer than any one individual could possibly be active. But the truth about Simister evades just about everyone - with two exceptions. The first exception is an American judge, Crowdy Lobbett, who does not know Simister's identity - but who apparently has stumbled upon a clue that is so dangerous to Simister that the criminal has made the judge a prime target for murder. The second exception is Albert Campion, who befriends the judge, manages to save his life on an ocean voyage from New York to London, and becomes involved in trying to protect the judge and his family from Simister. And it is Campion, of course, who will eventually solve the mystery and confront the villain.

Miles Davis by Jennifer Warner Pdf

The 20th century produced only a handful of musicians who could be called geniuses – people who would have achieved timeless fame no matter when they were born. Miles Davis is one of those individuals. He primarily played the trumpet, though he was an accomplished multi-instrumentalist. His signature style was minimalist and improvisational. Those closest to him described a shy person who used anger and arrogance as a shield to keep others away. Likewise, his addictive personality – he battled drugs and alcohol for virtually his entire adult life – made his creative achievements all the more remarkable. Miles died younger than he might have were it not for those self-destructive tendencies, but not before creating dozens of the most important jazz albums in the history of the genre. This book explores Davis’ fascinating life.

The Riddle of the Third Mile by Colin Dexter Pdf

The Riddle of the Third Mile is the sixth novel in Colin Dexter's Oxford-set detective series. As portrayed by John Thaw in ITV's Inspector Morse. The thought suddenly occurred to Morse that this would be a marvellous time to murder a few of the doddery old bachelor dons. No wives to worry about their whereabouts; no landladies to whine about the unpaid rents. In fact, nobody would miss most of them at all. . . Dr Browne-Smith passed through the porter's lodge at approximately 8.15 a.m. on the morning of Friday, 11th July. And nobody has heard from him since. By the 16th of July the Master of Lonsdale is concerned, but not yet worried. Plenty of time to disappear, think Chief Inspector Morse. And plenty of time, too, for someone to commit murder . . . As bodies begin to pile, Morse sets out on a journey through intricate and complicated history, from World War Two Egypt to present-day London, in search of answers. The Riddle of the Third Mile is followed by the seventh Inspector Morse book, The Secret of Annexe 3.

Moonlight Mile by Dennis Lehane Pdf

“[Lehane has] emerged from the whodunit ghetto as a broader and more substantial talent....When it comes to keeping readers exactly where he wants them, Mr. Lehane offers a bravura demonstration of how it’s done.” —New York Times Moonlight Mile is the first Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro suspense novel in more than a decade from the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling master of the new noir, Dennis Lehane. An explosive tale of vengeance and redemption—the brilliant sequel to Gone, Baby, Gone—Moonlight Mile returns Lehane’s unforgettable and deeply human detective duo to the mean streets of blue collar Boston to investigate the second disappearance of Amanda McCready, now sixteen years old. After his remarkable success with Mystic River, Shutter Island, and The Given Day, the celebrated author whom the Washington Post praises as, “one of those brave new detective stylists who is not afraid of fooling around with the genre’s traditions,” returns to his roots—and the result, as always, is electrifying.
