The island of Nantucket was settled in the 1640s by English Puritans who had grown discontented with the rule of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay. This work consists of detailed genealogies of the majority of the First Purchasers of Nantucket (the original owners of the island, as they were called). It is excerpted from Alexander Starbuck's much longer "History of Nantucket County, Island, and Town," constituting the final 200 pages of that opus. The volume begins with biographical sketches of the First Purchasers.
The Coffyn/Coffin Dynasty is a genealogical recapitulation of fifteen generations born in the United States. At first, I was going to title it The Coffin Saga Continues, but R. Gardner and Louis Coffin expired. I fell in love with a wonderful culmination of people belonging to my husband's family. I added the years before the stepping on US soil. There are millions more of people out there to be added. One can enjoy reading cover to cover about so many important individuals such as presidents, a Union Station president, aviators, college owners, and patented people besides farmers, teachers, doctors, etc. It is not the norm of "born and died" information.

Early Settlers of Nantucket by Lydia Swain Hinchman Pdf
Excerpt from Early Settlers of Nantucket: Their Associates and Descendants Several histories and genealogical books of individual families have been prepared, and are a great help in a work like this. It is not necessary, however, to the islanders that complete genealogies be put at their disposal, since the town, court and Friends' records are unusually complete and well preserved, and may be consulted if one really wants to know. There are matters which, to the people of Nantucket, who have one hundred or more years of family record on the island, are of common interest. It must be remembered that very few of the early settlers came directly from the Old world to Nantucket. Settlements were located on the main land, and family alliances made which are now interesting to note; and in the few instances where the families are brought down to the present time, it is intended to show the cropping up wherever one may go of descendants of the quiet Quaker peo-ple whose beginnings were so humble, but whose in uence has been so widespread.
