Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... INTRODUCTION PICTORIAL SATIRE AS A FACTOR IN NAPOLEONIC HISTORY E; est le propre de l'homme," says Rabelais; and the history of literature and of art bears witness to the truth of the assertion. The earliest known forms of art are so grotesquely imitative as to suggest a sense of fun in the cave-dwellers. Primitive poetry also often descended from the doings of gods and heroes to sport with dwarfs or gnomes. In either case the motive is at bottom much the same. Man has always delighted in gibes and jests. The dullness of the cave or the lake-dwelling must be enlivened with jokes either in verse or in drawing. Thus can the chief, merry with ale, while away the long evening and live over again amidst his women-folk the joys of triumph over his defeated and disgraced rival. Mocking doggerel and mocking sketches, we may be sure, are as old as the race. They added zest to the efforts of the early bards. Possibly they are the fountain-head of art. It is therefore with something primitive, innate, and almost savage that we are concerned in these volumes. Caricature has always existed and will always exist, for it is the laughter of art. Milton in his gayer moods could in spirit hie away-- "to the spicy nut-brown ale With stories told of many a feat How Faery Mab the junkets eat. VOL. I. xvil b She was pinched and pulled, she said; And he, by Friar's lantern led, Tells how the drudging goblin sweat To earn his cream-bowl duly set." If the grave Puritan poet could delight in "Sport that wrinkled care derides And laughter holding both his sides," how much more so beings akin to Aristophanes, Plautus, Rabelais, and Calverley? Some artists there are who must sometimes sport even with the most serious subject --witness Holbein's Dance of Death. But...

Resisting Napoleon by Mark Philp Pdf

"By bringing together historians of Britain and France to examine the dynamics of the conflict between the two nations in this period, this book measures its impact on their domestic political cultures, and its effect on their perceptions of each other. In so doing it will encourage scholars to examine in more detail aspects of popular mobilization which have hitherto been largely ignored, such as the resurgence of loyalism in 1803, and to see contributions in the light of the dual contexts of domestic political conflict and their war with each other. The book contributes both new detail to our understanding of the period and a better overall understanding of the complex place that each nation came to occupy in the consciousness of the other."--BOOK JACKET.

The Boy-Man, Masculinity and Immaturity in the Long Nineteenth Century by Pete Newbon Pdf

This book explores the evolution of male writers marked by peculiar traits of childlike immaturity. The ‘Boy-Man’ emerged from the nexus of Rousseau’s counter-Enlightenment cultural primitivism, Sensibility’s ‘Man of Feeling’, the Chattertonian poet maudit, and the Romantic idealisation of childhood. The Romantic era saw the proliferation of boy-men, who congregated around such metropolitan institutions as The London Magazine. These included John Keats, Leigh Hunt, Charles Lamb, Hartley Coleridge, Thomas De Quincey and Thomas Hood. In the period of the French Revolution, terms of childishness were used against such writers as Wordsworth, Keats, Hunt and Lamb as a tool of political satire. Yet boy-men writers conversely used their amphibian child-adult literary personae to critique the masculinist ideologies of their era. However, the growing cultural and political conservatism of the nineteenth century, and the emergence of a canon of serious literature, inculcated the relegation of the boy-men from the republic of letters.

The Conduct of War 1789-1961 by J. F. C. Fuller Pdf

This book, originally published in 1961, examines the wars from the age of absolute rulers, and the destructive impact of revolutionary and democratic government on this state of affairs. It discusses the relation between war and policy, and takes into account how the character of war in the first half of the twentieth century affected international diplomacy.
