Ecological Network and Local Authorities Sociological Instruments by Catherine Mougenot,Laurence Roussel,Council of Europe. Committee for the Activities of the Council of Europe in the Field of Biological and Landscape Diversity Pdf

Ever closer links have been forged between caring for nature on the one hand and human activities on the other. In recent years there has been a shift from an interest in reserve-based nature, which excluded man and human activities, to an increasingly powerful nature-culture relationship. Nature protection became nature conservation and then nature development with the integration of socio-economic and cultural aspects. Within the framework of the setting-up of the Pan-European Ecological Network, these sociological aspects have a great importance for establishing an ecological network where the scientific aspects of biodiversity protection must co-exist with nature management and development.

General Guidelines for the Development of the Pan-European Ecological Network by Council of Europe Pdf

The Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy, which was endorsed by ministers from 54 countries in the UN-ECE region on 25 October 1995, provides for the establishment by 2005 of the Pan-European Ecological Network. These Guidelines provide a reference document for all those involved in establishing and managing the network. The document aims to provide a coherent framework for guiding an array of co-operative, decentralised measures which aim to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of the ecosystems, habitats, species and landscapes of European importance.

Corridors for Birds Within a Pan-European Ecological Network by Colin Hindmarch,Jeff Kirby,Council of Europe. Committee for the Activities of the Council of Europe in the field of Biological and Landscape Diversity Pdf

This report considers the signifiance of corridors for high priority bird species within the development of Pan-European Ecological Network. This involves a brief review of existing research and policy, the testing of recent corridor ideas and typologies, the application of these ideas to fifteen birds "species of European Conservation Concern" and discussion of the next steps for research and policy development.

Identification of the Most Important Transboundary Protected Areas in Central and Eastern Europe by Robert Brunner,Council of Europe. Committee for the Activities of the Council of Europe in the field of Biological and Landscape Diversity Pdf

The protection of transborder areas in an ecological network system which take account of clusters of conservation areas represents an important step towards protecting natural heritage in Europe. Cross-border co-operation can help provide larger protected areas with uniform management and thus make a considerable contribution to the conservation of biodiversity. This report reflects the transborder co-operation in countries of central and eastern Europe, including Russia, the Baltic countries, Belarus and Ukraine.

Corridors and Ecosystems by Council of Europe Pdf

Coastal and marine ecological corridors, part of the Pan-european Ecological Network, form part of the migration route of many mobile marine species and are often narrow stretches of water (such as sea straits and river mouths). Shorebirds often move along the coast, itself one long corridor interrupted only by infrastructure and other developments. This study seeks to contribute to the identification of the main marine and coastal ecological corridors in Europe.

Action Plan for the Conservation of the Greater Horseshoe Bat in Europe (Rhinolophus Ferrumequinum) by Roger Ransome,Anthony Michael Hutson,Council of Europe Pdf

This publication results from a request by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention for action plans to be drawn up for the conservation of two bat species as a contribution to the Euro-Species Programme. (The second action plan concerns the Pond bat (Myotis Dasycneme)). The greater horseshoe bat is widespread in Europe with major declines in its population recorded this century. Both roosts and foraging habitats are threatened. Action has been taken in many of the countries that this bat inhabits and this has at least, stabilised populations. Further conservation plans may vary between the current centres of population and areas of depleted or extinct populations. This action plan gives detailed background to the current knowledge of the status and ecology of the pond bat and how this relates to threats to the species. The plan includes detailed objectives, points for further discussion and possible mechanisms for implementation of the action plan.

Code of Practice for the Introduction of Biological and Landscape Diversity Considerations Into the Transport Sector by Catherine J. Bickmore,Council of Europe. Committee for the Activities of the Council of Europe in the field of Biological and Landscape Diversity Pdf

The Pan-European Biological and Landscape Strategy (1996) aims to halt the degradation of landscape and biological diversity across the European region. Action Theme 2 of the Strategy relates to the integration of landscape and biological diversity into other sectors including transport. This Code of Practice contributes to this progress. The Code relates to linear transport systems, comprising roads, railways and inland navigation along waterways, such as canals and rivers. It aims to assist elected representatives, decision makers, and practitioners as well as nature conservation bodies in the understanding of the main issues and solutions associated with the planning, design and use of linear transportation networks i.e. roads, railways and inland navigation channels, in relation to the landscape and biological diversity. Other modes of transport are outside the scope of this CodeThe Code sets a political and social framework and proposes policy options for the development of new, and the maintenance of existing linear transport systems in relation to biological and landscape diversity. By building on examples, the Code has developed a series of Practice Pointers.

European Strategy for the Conservation of Invertebrates by John R. Haslett,Council of Europe. Standing Committee of the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats Pdf

Invertebrate animals make up the greater part of the world's biological diversity and are present in all habitats, where they perform essential ecological functions. Their survival is fundamental to the maintenance of life as we know it. Large numbers of invertebrate species are under severe threat of extinction in Europe, or are already extinct due to the extreme transformations that European habitats have suffered due to human activities. The European Strategy for the conservation of invertebrates, adopted by the Council of Europe (Bern Convention) in 2006, addresses the loss of invertebrate biodiversity and promotes their conservation and the services they provide in terrestrial and non-marine aquatic environments. The Strategy offers appropriate guidance to European governments, other decision-makers, land managers, scientists and teachers that have potential influence on invertebrate conservation.

Ecological Corridors and Species by Fabio Corsi,Iacopo Sinibaldi,Luigi Boitani,Council of Europe. Committee for the Activities of the Council of Europe in the field of Biological and Landscape Diversity Pdf

This report discusses the problems involved in developing an environmental suitability model to manage three large carnivore populations in the Alpine region, for the bear, the lynx and the wolf. The aim is to identify sensitive areas, both in terms of areas particularly suitable for the survival of the species and those which represent broad unsuitable patches) and connecting corridors. It is based on the results obtained by the 'Large Carnivores Conservation Areas in Europe' (LCCA) project developed by the Istituto di Ecologia Applicata (IEA) of Rome.
