Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (Volume 4) by Vikram Patel,Dan Chisholm,Tarun Dua,Ramanan Laxminarayan,Mari'a Lena Medina-Mora,Theo Vos Pdf

Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are common, highly disabling, and associated with significant premature mortality. The impact of these disorders on the social and economic well-being of individuals, families, and societies is large, growing, and underestimated. Despite this burden, these disorders have been systematically neglected, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with pitifully small contributions to scaling up cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies. Systematically compiling the substantial existing knowledge to address this inequity is the central goal of this volume. This evidence-base can help policy makers in resource-constrained settings as they prioritize programs and interventions to address these disorders.

A Handbook of Neurological Investigations in Children by Mary D. King,John B. P. Stephenson Pdf

Neurological disorders in children are common: families want to know what is wrong, why it happened, and whether it will happen again. Management and treatment depend on establishing the diagnosis, which usually requires investigations, but the number of possible neurological investigations is now very large indeed, and uncritical investigations may be seriously misleading and often costly. This book, based on the authors’ vast combined personal experience, gives practical guidance on how to target any specific condition with the minimum of tests. Part 1 is a brief distillation of advice on clinical history and examination, introducing the problems that beset those who deal with neurological disorders in childhood. Part 2 outlines the investigations available to solve these diagnostic problems. Part 3 takes a problem-oriented approach to the most appropriate investigations in the various clinical scenarios that may present to the practitioner: the starting point is the patient’s presentation, not the diagnosis. Throughout, vignettes of real cases help to illustrate the use of the tests in different clinical situations. The authors co-wrote the hugely popular Handbook of Neurological Investigations (“the Blue Book”) 20 years ago. This new book, while closely following the highly successful approach of the earlier title, is thoroughly up to date, with fresh material, new case vignettes, and additional investigations covered.

Diagnostic Tests in Neurology by G. David Perkin Pdf

In writing this book, I have attempted to provide information about the relative value of particular investigations in various neurological disorders. The book is divided into sections dealing with the methods of investigation, the investigation of particular symptoms, the investigation of specific neurological conditions and neurological emergencies. Finally, the assessment of certain disorders suggesting a particular anatomical localization, for example isolated optic atro phy, is considered. Following an appraisal of the literature, each section ends with a recommendation regarding appropriate investigation. In some in stances this is supported by an algorithm. Specific recommendations have been attempted despite the risk of producing over-dogmatic criteria for patient management. A small amount of illustrative material is included. I am grateful to colleagues at Charing Cross Hospital who have provided some of the illustrations. Figs 1. 4, 2. 1 and 10. 2 are reproduced from Atlas of Clinical Neurology, by G. D. Neurological Disorders by World Health Organization Pdf

Although there are several gaps in understanding the many issues related to neurological disorders, we know enough to be able to shape effective policy responses to some of the most common. This book describes and discusses the increasing public health impact of common neurological disorders such as dementia, epilepsy, headache disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuroinfections, neurological disorders associated with malnutrition, pain associated with neurological disorders, Parkinson's disease, stroke and traumatic brain injuries. It provides information and advice on public health interventions that may reduce their occurrence and consequences, and offers health professionals and planners the opportunity to assess the burden caused by these disorders. The clear message that emerges is that unless immediate action is taken globally, the neurological burden is likely to become an increasingly serious and unmanageable.

Challenging Cases in Neurologic Localization by Joel I. Shenker,Nakul Katyal,Junaid Siddiqui,Raghav Govindarajan Pdf

This concise book is about using clinical stories to learn how to practice neurology. Each chapter represents a neurological case from different sub-specialty of neurology; authors illustrate how clinical neurology storytelling remains heavily tied to a detailed understanding of neuroanatomy, then consideration of a differential diagnosis for neuroanatomic localization before determining an etiologic a differential diagnosis. The neuroanatomic localization can be focal (one spot or region), multifocal (two or more physically discrete separate regions), or diffuse (widely dispersed across a broad but selected part of neuroanatomy). These stories capture the hypothesis testing point of view by offering different diagnostic possibilities based on presenting history alone, and then the storyteller revises those possibilities after testing them further with physical exam findings and later with test data. At each point, the exercise is to understand what the possibilities are based only on the information available at that point of the hypothesis testing and data collection processes. This interesting read for the upcoming residents and medical student educates on presenting complex neurological case in an explicit way.

Fifty Neurologic Cases from Mayo Clinic by John H. Noseworthy Pdf

This informative and entertaining compilation of 50 short neurological cases demonstrates important principles in clinical localization and differential diagnosis. Each case presents the key elements without revealing the diagnosis at first. A vivid clinical scenario provides enough information for the student to localize the site of the lesion and for the experienced neurological physician to reach a differential diagnosis. Each case description is followed by one or two illustrations, the diagnosis, and then a commentary by a Mayo Clinic consultant. The commentary highlights the issues in the differential diagnosis and provides an update on what is currently known about the specific diagnostic entity. The book will be of interest to physicians and surgeons caring for neurological patients at each stage of their career. It will be of particular help to medical students and to residents and fellows in neurology and neurosurgery. Internists, pediatricians, geriatricians, and psychiatrists will also find it useful.

Fundamentals of Neurological Diagnosis by Bertha Ekeh Pdf

The importance of good history and physical examination with proper interpretation being adequate for neurological diagnosis in as much as 90% of cases cannot be overemphasized. Investigations however are essential for collaboration with or confirmation of the clinical diagnosis. Recent advances in scientific technology have increased the physician's armamentarium in investigative modalities. The advent of these sophisticated modalities (neuro imaging techniques, biochemical and gene studies) for the investigation of neurological disorders has caused an over reliance on these investigations alone for diagnosis. This practice should be avoided as it certainly does not guarantee the correct diagnosis in neurological patients. The aim of the neurologist is to arrive at a final diagnosis by the intelligent analysis of the clinical data aided by the least number of investigations; relevant. In essence, clinical diagnosis should always precede and guide the investigations. In making a neurological diagnosis therefore, it is pertinent to have a thorough clinical evaluation, localize the lesion, make a clinical diagnosis or narrow down the differential diagnosis before requesting investigations. This book 'Fundamentals of Neurological Diagnosis' gives a simplified step wise approach to the diagnosis of Neurological disorders. The first part is a brief anatomy of the nervous system; the second part is a guide to the localization of lesions while the third part details the basic investigations of the central nervous system. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson that said "To ensure that one person breathed easier just because you lived: that is to have achieved". My utmost purpose in writing this book is to ensure that some persons breathe easier in Neurological Diagnosis.

Neurological Differential Diagnosis by Roongroj Bhidayasiri,Michael F. X. Waters,Christopher Giza Pdf

Neurology is primarily characterized by a variety of diseases which seem very similar and are therefore difficult to distinguish between. Skill at differential diagnosis is therefore absolutely paramount. Neurological Differential Diagnosis is a streamlined handbook of prioritized differential diagnosis, to be used both in clinical practice and for exam review. By presenting differential diagnosis in order of frequency and importance, this book provides a practical handbook for clinicians in training, as well as a potential resource for quick board review. Whilst the book covers the most important syndromes and disease entities, readers are referred to other texts for more exhaustive differentials. By limiting differentials in this way - to the most likely and most serious diagnoses - the reader can more easily recall relevant disease processes when faced with a particular clinical situation, whether it be a patient in the emergency room or a difficult question on the board examination. The book specifically targets neurology residents and fellows, with overlap to neurosurgery and psychiatry. Internal medicine physicians with an interest in neurological problems and medical students looking for an edge in clinical neuroscience would also benefit from this text. The content is primarily mid-level material, in a pedagogic format. In order to organize the students' thought processes concise tables and line drawing templates are included. The book is organized into broad chapters by type of disorder and some overlap occurs between particular chapters.
