Fast Money Schemes by John Cox Pdf

A history and anthropological analysis of one of Papua New Guinea’s worst Ponzi schemes in the late 1990s. In the late 1990s and early 2000s a wave of Ponzi schemes swept through Papua New Guinea, Australia, and the Solomon Islands. The most notorious scheme, U-Vistract, attracted many thousands of investors, enticing them with promises of one percent interest to be paid monthly. Its founder, Noah Musingku, was a charismatic leader who promoted the scheme as a form of Christian mission and as the basis for establishing an independent kingdom. Fast Money Schemes uses in-depth interviews with investors, newspaper accounts, and participant observation to understand the scheme’s appeal from the point of view of those who invested and lost, showing that organizers and investors alike understood the scheme as a way of accessing and participating in a global economy. John Cox delivers a “post-village” ethnography that gives insight into the lives of urban, middle-class Papua New Guineans, a group that is not familiar to US readers and that has seldom been a focus of anthropological interest. The book’s concern with understanding the interweaving of morality, finance, and aspirations shared by a global cosmopolitan middle class has wide resonance beyond studies of Papua New Guinea and anthropology.

A Great Cloud of Witnesses by Church Publishing Pdf

A new and expanded volume of optional commemorations of significant figures in the history of the Episcopal Church. This volume replaces the popular Holy Women, Holy Men. By action of the 2015 General Convention, Great Cloud of Witnesses is being made available for devotional or catechetical use and for use in public worship throughout the Church. It reflects the lively experience of holiness, especially on the level of the local community. It is accordingly a useful tool for learning about the history of the church and identifying those who have inspired and challenged us from the time of the New Testament to the present. Each entry includes a biographical narrative of the person or people, highlighting the significance of their lives and witness. A devotional collect is provided in both Rite I and Rite II language and a set of indexing “tags” suggests how the entry fits into the broader scope of Christian history and delineates the Christian gifts and virtues that may have inspired the person’s ministries. This edition is printed on a special synthetic paper coated with a unique clay coating which combines the advantages of paper with the durability of plastic. This paper looks and feels like paper but stands up to water, weather, grease, chemicals and resists tearing in both directions.

Celebrating the Saints by Robert Atwell Pdf

For every major feast, saint’s day and commemoration in the calendars of the Anglican churches of the UK, this liturgical resource and spiritual companion offers a feast of readings that reflects the richness, depth and variety of the Christian tradition from the earliest years of the church to the present day. Writings from across the centuries represent the Eastern, Western, Roman and Celtic traditions and constitute a vibrant history of Christianity manifested in the lives of hundreds of holy men and women as diverse as first century martyrs, or twentieth century social reformers. A complementary volume to Exciting Holiness which provides scripture readings and prayers for the calendar, this is now updated to include the additional commemorations in the Church of England’s calendar of saints.

The Daily Office SSF by Anonim Pdf

The opus dei is the prayer life of the Church. By the use of forms of prayer prescribed during the day, Christians of all traditions connect with the prayer life of the Universal Church. To members of religious orders, these daily 'offices' form the structure of the day. The patterns of this daily prayer embrace the three key elements of praise, intercession and engagement with Scripture. The Society of Saint Francis have been fervent advocates of the use of these forms of daily prayer for lay people, priests and religious people. Indeed the Church of England drew very heavily on the work pioneered by the Franciscans when they produced their own Daily Prayer part of the series of books following the publication of Common Worship (Church House, 2005). But this book has a lot of additional 'Franciscan' material and as such has long maintained a strong and devoted audience. Now this revised edition brings the basic texts into line with Common Worship by using more contemporary but dignified language and the Common Worship translation of the Psalms.
