Studies in Literature (Classic Reprint) by Frederick M. Tisdel Pdf

Excerpt from Studies in Literature This book is intended as a textbook for secondary schools; it is a guide to the study of the classics read in these schools and required for admission to college in English. Its purpose is not to take the place of the introductions and notes of the annotated editions, but to supplement them. The objects of the study of any classic in the secondary schools are four: (1) to understand the language of the classic; (2) to appreciate its literary qualities, especially those qualities that make the classic a masterpiece of the type of literature to which it belongs; (3) to realize the connection of the classic with life, and (4) to fix the place of the classic in literary history. For the first of these objects, the annotated editions give ample help. In this textbook, therefore, purely philological notes have been, for the most part, avoided. In Part I, the primary aim has been to define briefly the various literary types and to impress their most salient characteristics by an inductive study of representative classics. An effort has also been made to bring the thought of the classics into relation with ordinary experience. There are some who believe such a "literary study" impracticable. The author thinks otherwise. His experience in teaching in the secondary schools has led him to believe that something more can be done to systematize "literary study." He realizes the difficulty of keeping a consistent course between the obvious and trivial on the one hand, and the vague and impressional on the other, and can hardly expect to be free from error in one or the other direction. New Literary Values by David Daiches Pdf

Excerpt from New Literary Values: Studies in Modern Literature This is not to say that no criticism is good which does not take the form of philosophical investiga tion, but that such investigation must precede any further discussion. Criticism must assume a stable standard of values and constant points of reference, and the discovery of these must be made by each critic for himself. Otherwise there cannot even be an intelligent handling of vocabulary. What can the critic do with such words as aesthetic, form, ideal, significant, unless he has satisfied himself about their meaning by his own investigations? How often do we see quite un defined terms flung about loosely in critical writing which passes for profound! Definition of terms is no simple matter it is not the beginning of a thought-process but the end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. New Studies in Literature (Classic Reprint) by Edward Dowden Pdf

Excerpt from New Studies in Literature These studies, chosen from a larger number which appeared during a series of years in The Fortnightly Review, are reprinted with the permission of the proprietors of that periodical. The portion of the volume which deals with Goethe is derived from an examination of Goethe's mind and art, to which I gave much time and pains, but which still remains incomplete. So much new material has recently come to light, so much awaits publication, and so great has been the industry of German scholars, that delay seemed advisable. Certain fragments of my study were thrown into the shape of addresses delivered as President of the English Goethe Society; one - that on Goethe's friendship with Schiller - was read before the Manchester Goethe Society. The article on "Literary Criticism in France" was given as one - I believe the first - of the recently established Taylorian lectures at Oxford. Literary Studies of Poems, New and Old (Classic Reprint) by Dorothea Beale Pdf

Excerpt from Literary Studies of Poems, New and Old The following is chiefly a selection from papers written for English literature classes at the Ladies' College, Cheltenham. Others are reprints from various periodicals. The first two were written for meetings of our Guild of old pupils, at which were given respectively scenes from Dante, and from Spenser's Faery Queene. I have thought it best to leave them in their original form. The allusions in the Britomart paper are to stained glass windows representing six episodes in the story, (1) Britomart is looking into the magic mirror. (2) She is clothing herself in armour in the Church. (3) She is defending the Red-cross Knight. (4) She is passing through the fire. (5) She meets Sir Arthegall. (6) She sends him out to accomplish his work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Foundation Studies in Literature (Classic Reprint) by Margaret S. Mooney Pdf

Excerpt from Foundation Studies in Literature A new text-book in literature should have some reason to be in these days of making many books. The best possible reason that can be given for the preparation of a work of this kind, is that it furnishes to both teachers and students a method of study that necessarily leads to certain definite and much valued results, among which are the following: A better appreciation of artistic merit in poetry; a knowledge of. The relation of the mythology of Greece and Rome to the poetry of every European nation and language of modern times; the power to use this golden key. Studies in Literature by Arthur Quiller-Couch Pdf

Excerpt from Studies in Literature: Second Series I allowed that the word Studies might well seem an exorbitant one for the familiar discourses bound within its cover, and gave half a promise to justify the title more thoroughly next time. That half-promise I am not keeping: and I want my American readers to forgive me, as I think they will when they know the reason why. Short Studies in Literature (Classic Reprint) by Hamilton Wright Mabie Pdf

Excerpt from Short Studies in Literature That these brief chapters may prove helpful to readers of books who desire to become students of literature, is the hope which the writer ventures to cherish in the face of defects more obvious to him than to the most unsympathetic critic. These studies are not critical but interpretative; they are neither exhaustive nor inclusive; they are mainly hints and suggestions. Each chapter might be elaborated into a volume. If they serve to indicate the leading lines of literary development, the fundamental divisions and distinctions, the deep and vital tendencies, they will accomplish the end for which they were written. That they represent deep convictions concerning the significance of literature rather than a purely critical attitude, will be apparent to the most indifferent reader. Studies in English Literature (Classic Reprint) by John Dennis Pdf

Excerpt from Studies in English Literature The chapters in this volume are to some extent reprints; but several of them are considerably eu larged, and some are so changed in substance and form as to present an original aspect. The ground work of the essay on Pope, republished by the courtesy of Messrs. Longmans, is to be found in Fraser's Magazine; but the author has also made use, with the permission of the proprietors, of several papers on the same subject printed in the Pall Mall Gazette and in the Athenwum. Thanks are due to the editors of the Spectator, for authority to insert the Wesley article; and to Messrs. Smith, Elder, and Cc., for the use of the remaining essays. Essays and Literary Studies (Classic Reprint) by Stephen Leacock Pdf

Excerpt from Essays and Literary Studies Now the professor more than any ordinary person finds himself shut out from the general society of the business world. The rest of the interests have, after all, some things in com mon. The circles intersect at various points. Iron and steel has a certain fellowship with pulp and paper, and the whole lot of them may be converted into the common ground of preference shares and common stock. But the professor is to all of them an outsider. Hence his natural dissimilarity is unduly heightened in its appearance by the sort of avocational iso lation in which he lives. Studies in Several Literatures (Classic Reprint) by Harry Thurston Peck Pdf

Excerpt from Studies in Several Literatures Several years ago, Mr. Andrew Carnegie, who is always doing something interesting and unexpected, gave to the public his opinion as to the literary and ethical value of Homer. Not a few persons were in clined to mock at this deliverance and to recall the old maxim that the cobbler should stick to his last. Mr. Carnegie, they said, might know more about iron and steel than any other living man; but why should he put himself forward as an authority on Classical literature? He himself would certainly not have listened with much respect to the views of Professor Gildersleeve or the late Sir Richard Jebb on the subject of iron tubing and steel rails. Thornton Wilder, Classical Reception, and American Literature by Stephen J. Rojcewicz, Jr. Pdf

This book delineates how Thornton Wilder (1897–1975), a learned playwright and novelist, embeds himself within the classical tradition, integrating Greek and Roman motifs with a wide range of sources to produce heart-breaking masterpieces such as Our Town and comedy sensations such as Dolly Levi. Through this study of archival sources and close reading, readers will understand Wilder’s avant-garde staging and innovative time sequences not as a break with the past, but as a response to the classics. The author traces the genesis of unforgettable characters like Dolly Levi in The Matchmaker, Emily Webb in Our Town, and George Antrobus in The Skin of Our Teeth. Vergil’s expression, "Here are the tears of the world, and human matters touch the heart" haunts Wilder’s oeuvre. Understanding Vergil’s phrase as "tears for the beauty of the world," Wilder utilizes scenes depicting the beauty of the world and the sorrow when individuals recognize this too late. Wilder exhorts us to observe lovingly, alert to the wonder of the everyday. This work will appeal to actors and directors, professors and students in classics and in American literature, those fascinated by modern drama and performance studies, and non-specialists, theatre-goers, and readers in the general public.
