Studies in Literature (Classic Reprint) by Frederick M. Tisdel Pdf

Excerpt from Studies in Literature Part II consists of a brief survey of English literature with assigned readings from the literature itself. Much study about authors whose books the student has never read is of doubt ful utility. A wiser plan is to use a very brief account of the literature in connection with a considerable amount of reading in the literature itself arranged chronologically. In studying Part II, therefore, emphasis should be placed upon the sug gested readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Studies in English Literature (Classic Reprint) by John Dennis Pdf

Excerpt from Studies in English Literature The chapters in this volume are to some extent reprints; but several of them are considerably eu larged, and some are so changed in substance and form as to present an original aspect. The ground work of the essay on Pope, republished by the courtesy of Messrs. Longmans, is to be found in Fraser's Magazine; but the author has also made use, with the permission of the proprietors, of several papers on the same subject printed in the Pall Mall Gazette and in the Athenwum. Thanks are due to the editors of the Spectator, for authority to insert the Wesley article; and to Messrs. Smith, Elder, and Cc., for the use of the remaining essays. English Literature and the Classics (Classic Reprint) by G. S. Gordon Pdf

Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal. Social Studies in English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Laura Johnson Wylie Pdf

Excerpt from Social Studies in English Literature The unity of the following studies consists in their common viewpoint, each essay tracing the relation between a certain body of literature and some aspects of the social conditions out of which it grew. This unity of idea is due to no attempt to illustrate the now generally accepted theory that literature is essentially social in nature and function, but results solely from the pedestrian effort to "see the object as in itself it really is." In the history of the essay and in the English poetry of the Revolution the connection between literature and life on which the criticism of our day emphatically insists is so obvious that it seems impossible to come to a full understanding either of this art-form or of these poets without recognizing the social affiliations of each. Though conscious of many debts to many friends in writing these papers, I can mention only three. Miss Julia B. Anthony and Miss Katharine Warren have given me invaluable aid in reading proof, and Professor Gertrude Buck, for many years my associate in the English Department of Vassar College, has been indefatigable in criticism and suggestion. Studies in Early English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Emelyn W. Washburn Pdf

Excerpt from Studies in Early English Literature This is especially true of the old English literature. It is a folio of many leaves, yet one book from the dap pled dawn of Saxon Alfred to the sunrise of Chaucer it is one long day, deepening into the full noon of' Shakespeare. Each period is a phase of the great strug gles of English national life: the shaping of a rough folk into a Christian people; the stormy time of the Norman Conquest ending in stronger unity; the awakening of the Reformation; the ripening of the whole past in the reign of Elizabeth. Each English writer, from Caedmon, who first sung the Creation, to Milton, from Aelfric to Jeremy Taylor, from Alfred to Burke, is a living historian of the English mind. Excerpt from Studies in English and American Literature The questions and remarks are placed at the end of each Part, instead of being put at the end of each chapter, or at the close of the section to which they refer. It is hoped that these questions will aid materially in analyzing the thought, and that they will prove a decided help both in learning and in teaching the lessons. In the historical portion, the effort has been to represent every period by the best it produced. For this purpose it has not been thought necessary to call attention to. A great number of writers, but only to such as gave tone and char acter to the literature of their time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools (Classic Reprint) by J. Logie Robertson Pdf

Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Studies in the Influence of the Classics on English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Ruth Ingersoll Goldmark Pdf

Excerpt from Studies in the Influence of the Classics on English Literature When the full day of Elizabeth's reign arrived, other triumphs than those of unschooled art were prepared. From the universities came men with the background of humanistic studies, endowed with wit and with poetic talents instinct with the beau tiful or the sublime. With the advent of these and of Shakespeare, the London stage won to its new standard all necessary to make it complete but the constructive critic. Such a man was not only required to supplement the artistic completeness Of Elizabethan drama, but to serve lesser writers with education in fundamental form. So, unmis takably the man for his time was Ben Jonson, in no respect more rare than in his erudition. His intellectual grasp is known to have compre hended even the subtlest knowledge of his times and much mediaeval lore, but it is impressive to con sider only his classic learning. The first of English poets, with the wealth of Greece as well as Rome at his command, he has not, in periods especially animated by the Greek spirit, been surpassed for the profoundness of his literary acquaintance. Others have exhibited more intimate knowledge and de light; but Jonson in his day stood alone in his championship and first in his conscious theory of art based upon scholarship. While a catalogue of Jonson's Greek and Latin reading would fill line after line, the story of his educational advantages can be briefly told. All quality and inspiration in his early training may safely be attributed by Jonson's own grateful acknowledgment to the famous second master of Westminster School, the most learned, and my honored friend, Master Camden,1 to whom Every M an in his Humor was dedicated. Under his instruction was laid the foundation of vast and exact translation. The jottings of idle moments, contained in the Discoveries, are a revelation Of the range at Jonson's command. Incidental anecdote or authority quoted in this memorandum laid under contribution not only the masterpieces of poetry, philosophy, and oratory, but more obscure gram marians, sophists, and historians.2 With his vigor ous scholarship and naturally retentive memory, Jonson could scarcely be surpassed for the richness of his quotation and allusion. He says of his own faculty in the Discoveries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Contemporary English Literature The general bibliographies are arranged according to literary type, with subdivisions indicatedlin so far as they prove helpful. The reference works on poetry, for example, are subdivided into anthologies, biographical and critical studies, and discussions of poetic theory and principle. In the bibliographies of individual authors, the order of ar rangement is generally from comprehensi've treatment to the treatment of particular facets of the author's life and works. The chronologies of authors' works and the lists of biblio graphical items are often selective rather than exhaustive; and in the reference works, reviews and newspaper notices are not included. Only places of publication other than New York and London are listed in the bibliographies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
