Distributed Economic Operation in Smart Grid: Model-Based and Model-Free Perspectives by Jiahu Qin,Yanni Wan,Fangyuan Li,Yu Kang,Weiming Fu Pdf

This book aims to work out the distributed economic operation in smart grids in a systematic way, which ranges from model-based to model-free perspectives. The main contributions of this book can be summarized into three folds. First, we investigate the fundamental economic operation problems in smart grids from model-based perspective. Specifically, these problems can be modeled as deterministic optimization models, and we propose some distributed optimization algorithms by integrating the multi-agent consensus theory and optimization techniques to achieve the distributed coordination of various generation units and loads. Second, due to the randomness of the large-scale renewable energies and the flexibility of the loads, we further address these economic operation problems from a model-free perspective, and we propose learning-based approaches to address the uncertainty and randomness. At last, we extend the idea of model-based and model-free algorithms to plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) charging/discharging scheduling problem, the key challenge of which involves multiple objectives simultaneously while the behavior of PEVs and the electricity price are intrinsically random. This book presents several recent theoretical findings on distributed economic operation in smart grids from model-based and model-free perspectives. By systematically integrating novel ideas, fresh insights, and rigorous results, this book provides a base for further theoretical research on distributed economic operation in smart grids. It can be a reference for graduates and researchers to study the operation and management in smart grids. Some prerequisites for reading this book include optimization theory, matrix theory, game theory, reinforcement learning, etc.

Intelligent Power Grids of Tomorrow by Nava Raj Karki,Bishnu Prasad Bhattarai,Ajit Kumar Verma,Rajesh Karki Pdf

This book discusses various aspects of future intelligent power grids, covering key topics including the operation of smart grids and microgrids, resource optimization, and energy management. Over the last few decades, the use of solar photovoltaics (PVs) and wind turbine generators has increased significantly in an effort to make future power systems sustainable. However, the intensive integration of renewables in existing electrical networks has raised several control and operational issues due to their limited dispatch capability and intermittent generation. In addition, integrating new electrical loads, such as those produced by electric vehicles, heat pumps, and electric water heaters, in existing distribution networks negatively impacts the power-balance scenario. As such, these developments present both challenges and opportunities for the research community. Against this backdrop, the book not only discusses the challenges and their potential solutions, but also outlines future research directions that could help make future power grids intelligent, adaptive, and resilient. It presents insights from academia, industry, and research institutions on understanding, modeling, and analyzing the control and operation of intelligent power grids of the future.

Power Electronics-Enabled Autonomous Power Systems by Qing-Chang Zhong Pdf

Power systems worldwide are going through a paradigm shift from centralized generation to distributed generation. This book presents the SYNDEM (i.e., synchronized and democratized) grid architecture and its technical routes to harmonize the integration of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, storage systems, and flexible loads, with the synchronization mechanism of synchronous machines, to enable autonomous operation of power systems, and to promote energy freedom. This is a game changer for the grid. It is the sort of breakthrough — like the touch screen in smart phones — that helps to push an industry from one era to the next, as reported by Keith Schneider, a New York Times correspondent since 1982. This book contains an introductory chapter and additional 24 chapters in five parts: Theoretical Framework, First-Generation VSM (virtual synchronous machines), Second-Generation VSM, Third-Generation VSM, and Case Studies. Most of the chapters include experimental results. As the first book of its kind for power electronics-enabled autonomous power systems, it • introduces a holistic architecture applicable to both large and small power systems, including aircraft power systems, ship power systems, microgrids, and supergrids • provides latest research to address the unprecedented challenges faced by power systems and to enhance grid stability, reliability, security, resiliency, and sustainability • demonstrates how future power systems achieve harmonious interaction, prevent local faults from cascading into wide-area blackouts, and operate autonomously with minimized cyber-attacks • highlights the significance of the SYNDEM concept for power systems and beyond Power Electronics-Enabled Autonomous Power Systems is an excellent book for researchers, engineers, and students involved in energy and power systems, electrical and control engineering, and power electronics. The SYNDEM theoretical framework chapter is also suitable for policy makers, legislators, entrepreneurs, commissioners of utility commissions, energy and environmental agency staff, utility personnel, investors, consultants, and attorneys.
