The Nix by Nathan Hill Pdf

Winner of the Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction A New York Times 2016 Notable Book Entertainment Weekly's #1 Book of the Year A Washington Post 2016 Notable Book A Slate Top Ten Book NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “The Nix is a mother-son psychodrama with ghosts and politics, but it’s also a tragicomedy about anger and sanctimony in America. . . . Nathan Hill is a maestro.” —John Irving From the suburban Midwest to New York City to the 1968 riots that rocked Chicago and beyond, The Nix explores—with sharp humor and a fierce tenderness—the resilience of love and home, even in times of radical change. It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart. Which version of his mother is true? Two facts are certain: she’s facing some serious charges, and she needs Samuel’s help. To save her, Samuel will have to embark on his own journey, uncovering long-buried secrets about the woman he thought he knew, secrets that stretch across generations and have their origin all the way back in Norway, home of the mysterious Nix. As he does so, Samuel will confront not only Faye’s losses but also his own lost love, and will relearn everything he thought he knew about his mother, and himself.

A Conversation in Blood by Paul S. Kemp Pdf

The hard-fighting, harder-drinking fortune hunters of The Hammer and the Blade and A Discourse in Steel are back to test their mettle and tempt fickle fate. Fantasy fiction has long welcomed adventurous rogues: Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg, and Scott Lynch’s Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen have all made their mark. In his Egil & Nix series, New York Times bestselling author Paul S. Kemp introduces a daring new duo to the ranks of fantasy fame—or is it infamy? Nix is a nimble thief with just enough knowledge of magic to get into serious trouble. Egil is the only priest of a discredited god. Together, they seek riches and renown, but somehow it is always misadventure and mayhem that find them—even in the dive bar they call home. And their luck has yet to change. All Nix wants to do is cheer Egil up after a bout of heartbreak. And, of course, strike it so rich that they need never worry about their combined bar bill. But when the light-fingered scoundrel plunders a tomb and snatches mysterious golden plates covered in runes, the treasure brings terrifying trouble. Pursued by an abomination full of ravenous hunger and unquenchable wrath, Egil and Nix find all they hold dear—including their beloved tavern—in dire peril. To say nothing of the world itself. Praise for A Conversation in Blood “An adventure perfect for fantasy fans and action-movie lovers. It will take readers on a wild ride with heart-pounding fights, harebrained schemes, and several laugh-out-loud moments.”—Booklist “If you enjoy storytelling with the content sensibilities of Game of Thrones, then imagine George R. R. Martin forced to write while strapped to the front of a War Boys’ car going 100 mph, pumped full of Jolt Cola and Pixy Sticks with Metallica blaring from the speakers and you approximate the full Egil & Nix experience that [Paul S.] Kemp delivers.”—Rebels Report

Nix by J. J. Reichenbach Pdf

Nix has one goal: to escape notice long enough for her enemies to forget about a murderous joyride thing that Nix may have done but definitely wasn't responsible for. Just when Nix gets settled into a little girl named Callie in a nondescript Californian town, a family of paranormal hunters comes knocking on the door. The potential for the kind of questions that could end in exposure-or worse, an exorcism-is too high to ignore. One of the hunters is a nineteen-year-old girl, sweet as apple pie and twice as naive, and too perfect an opportunity to pass up. Rachel fits worse than Callie, loose in all the wrong places, but all Nix needs to do is lead the hunters away-and give Rachel and her adopted brother a dirty little secret to keep-then disappear. Of course, nothing's ever that easy. Nix regrets stealing Rachel almost as soon as she does it. Caught inside a hunter, Nix is damned if she leaves and double damned if she stays-though damnation is pretty rhetorical for a demon. To make matters worse, the idiot hunters are wrapped up in some nasty plot to destroy the world. Nix has objections to that sort of nonsense. Nix isn't the hero the world deserves, but she's the hero it's damn well going to get.

What a to do! When the Green Nix arrive on the Red Nix shore it creates a clamour and a huge uproar, for the Red Nix do not like it one little bit, not a smidgen, a tad, or even a nip! Apollo Stark’s ‘The Nix,’ is the second Seussian styled story he has written, but this time a smattering of Edward Lear-like nonsense has been thrown in for good measure! The Nix is a tongue testing story, smattered with nonsensical words and portmanteaus, which splash his rhyming tale with dashes of colourful craziness to delight both young and old alike.

Homo, Fix or Nix by Abdulmouti Souwed Pdf

This interesting essay, developed with a philosophical approach, has the advantage of crossing and taking inspiration from various disciplines for the understanding of some very topical contemporary phenomena. Analyzing some authors of classical Western philosophy and comparing them with other thinkers from other geographical areas (among them some intellectuals of Islamic current), the author confronts the reader with a great reflection on how we see the world today, often influenced by the powerful communication weapon represented by the WEB. Through the use of simple examples, it will be almost natural to understand that phenomena such as extremism (described as a blatant phenomenon against the difficulties of life and the problems of societies), common sense, justice, populism are innate in man’s ability to relate to each other, emerging in a sort of sense a common destiny of human beings. Souwed Abdulmouti was born in 1943 in a traditional, modest environment in thinking and behavior region and hometown, Homs (Syria). His father died early because of diabetic issue. Primary school was mostly a failure, the neighborhood where he lived in his childhood had two mosques, and during the summer he used to enter them to drink cold water from naturally cooled clay pots. Some books of philosophy opened up his life path of thought while he was in junior high school. At the end of middle school, he moved to Damascus, until the end of his university level, then he set out to France where he obtained a Doctorate in Islamic Philosophy Studies, (Dialectic – Al Tawhid), at Sorbonne University, Maitrise in Comparative Philosophy, at Nancy University France 1972, has Bachelor of Arts (Social studies/Philosophy) in Damascus University. Working outside Syria from 1981 until retirement age. His career can be divided into two steps: – in charge of making textbooks for secondary school on philosophic matter – as a University professor of humanities. These two mentioned points developed his strong idea consisting on teaching Critical Thinking matters.

Sabriel by Garth Nix Pdf

Game of Thrones fans will love the New York Times bestselling Abhorsen series. Sabriel, the first installment in the trilogy, launched critically acclaimed author Garth Nix onto the fantasy scene as a rising star. Dark Secrets, Deep Love, and Dangerous Magic Sent to a boarding school in Ancelstierre as a young child, Sabriel has had little experience with the random power of Free Magic or the Dead who refuse to stay dead in the Old Kingdom. But during her final semester, her father, the Abhorsen, goes missing, and Sabriel knows she must enter the Old Kingdom to find him. She soon finds companions in Mogget, a cat whose aloof manner barely conceals its malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories. As the three travel deep into the Old Kingdom, threats mount on all sides. And every step brings them closer to a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death—and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own destiny. “Sabriel is a winner, a fantasy that reads like realism. Here is a world with the same solidity and four-dimensional authority as our own, created with invention, clarity and intelligence.” —Philip Pullman, author of His Dark Materials trilogy
