Berenice from Cappadocia: the no hero's journey - dawn by Adriana Martins Pdf

Berenice is not a hero; she is an ordinary person who had to go through tortuous paths, like all of us. But if Berenice experienced difficulties, like all of us, what does she have to teach us? Berenice's lessons derive from the person she becomes regardless of so many stones in her life. This is the great teaching of Adriana Martins personified in her non-heroine. Despite the storms we all go through, what really defines us is what we become during and after such storms. Overcoming daily pains and still allowing ourselves to live with joy and wisdom is not easy, but I assure you that a certain shepherdess from Cappadocia can help us on this journey.

The Black Woods by Amy Godine Pdf

The Black Woods chronicles the history of Black pioneers in New York's northern wilderness. From the late 1840s into the 1860s, they migrated to the Adirondacks to build farms and to vote. On their new-worked land, they could meet the $250 property requirement New York's constitution imposed on Black voters in 1821, and claim the rights of citizenship. Three thousand Black New Yorkers were gifted with 120,000 acres of Adirondack land by Gerrit Smith, an upstate abolitionist and heir to an immense land fortune. Smith's suffrage-seeking plan was endorsed by Frederick Douglass and most leading Black abolitionists. The antislavery reformer John Brown was such an advocate that in 1849 he moved his family to Timbuctoo, a new Black Adirondack settlement in the woods. Smith's plan was prescient, anticipating Black suffrage reform, affirmative action, environmental distributive justice, and community-based racial equity more than a century before these were points of public policy. But when the response to Smith's offer fell radically short of his high hopes, Smith's zeal cooled. Timbuctoo, Freemen's Home, Blacksville and other settlements were forgotten. History would marginalize this Black community for 150 years. In The Black Woods, Amy Godine recovers a robust history of Black pioneers who carved from the wilderness a future for their families and their civic rights. Her immersive story returns the Black pioneers and their descendants to their rightful place at the center of this history. With stirring accounts of racial justice, and no shortage of heroes, The Black Woods amplifies the unique significance of the Adirondacks in the American imagination.

Source of Wisdom by Thomas D. Hill,Frederick M. Biggs,Charles Darwin Wright,Thomas N. Hall Pdf

As one of the most prolific and influential scholars in the field, Thomas D. Hill has made an indelible mark on the study of Old English literature. In celebration of his distinguished career, the editors of Source of Wisdom have assembled a wide-ranging collection of nineteen original essays on Old English poetry and prose as well as early medieval Latin, touching upon many of Hill's specific research interests. Among the topics examined in this volume are the Christian-Latin sources of Old English texts, including religious and 'sapiential' poetry, and prose translations of Latin writings. Old English poems such as Beowulf, The Dream of the Rood, and The Wife's Lament are treated, throughout, to thematic, textual, stylistic, lexical, and source analysis. Prose writers of the period such as King Alfred and Wærferth, as well as medieval Latin writers such as Bede and Pseudo-Methodius are also discussed. As an added feature, the volume includes a bibliography of publications by Thomas D. Hill. Source of Wisdom is, ultimately, a contribution to the understanding of medieval English literature and the textual traditions that contributed to its development.

Super Corporate Heroes Vol. 1 by Miguel Guerra,Suzy Dias Pdf

Concept To slap a satirical spin on the ludicrous nature of the financial crisis. As Jackie Chan is to Bruce Lee, so "Super Corporate Heroes" is to Alan Moore’s "Watchmen". Bare Bones Summary The corruption of ideals. Synopsis After powerful companies (and lobbyists) decimate the golden age of non-profit superheroes, new rules are designed and a new generation of superheroes use their extraordinary powers to earn a living. In this alternate reality, superheroes must be licensed by a mega insurance company called Superhero, Inc and people pay to be rescued. Saddle up for the absurdly modern misadventures of these working superheroes. The narrative thread weaves around short vignettes detailing key moments in the lives of various superheroes that work for Superhero, Inc. The benefits of working for the company are fame and fortune. Their celebrity can dwarf the paparazzi frenzy of Hollywood stars and all-star athletes combined. The top earner and most famous is American Icon, a former country music star. His invulnerable strength is only matched by his binge drinking and playboy lifestyle. The hardest working superhero is Ms. Titanium. She’s just as strong as American Icon, but when she found out she’s only paid half his salary, she walks out to plot her revenge. Then there’s the working stiff heroes, who are overworked and often punished for saving people without a license. Enter Blue Collar (a.k.a. Hero in a Hatchback), a divorced father of three with more bills than cash, and Spinlar, a half fly, half spider Brazilian heartthrob who’s trying to live the American dream. His one problem? Spinning a web from his back end can keep even the best superhero’s career from advancing.
