Non-flint Stone Tools and the Palaeolithic Occupation of the Iberian Peninsula by Norah Moloney Pdf

The papers in this volume introduce English readers to the variety and scope of Palaeolithic stone tool research taking place in the Iberian Peninsula. They not only offer information about early occupation in the region but also demonstrate the diversity and quality of those research projects. The contributions cover all periods of the Palaeolithic, with a focus on Lower and Upper Palaeolithic topics, and one concerns raw material in a Portuguese Mesolithic site. The volume also includes an overview of raw material exploitation in the Lower Palaeolithic of the Iberian peninsula and comments on the particular problems associated with past and present research. Many of the papers represent regional studies, others relate to specific sites, and some describe changing strategies in the use of raw materials. Technology, typology and their association with raw material and/or subsistence patterns are addressed, as are current methodological approaches towards lithic and use-wear analyses.

Sourcebook of Paleolithic Transitions by Marta Camps,Parth Chauhan Pdf

As the study of Palaeolithic technologies moves towards a more analytical approach, it is necessary to determine a consistent procedural framework. The contributions to this timely and comprehensive volume do just that. This volume incorporates a broad chronological and geographical range of Palaeolithic material from the Lower to Upper Palaeolithic. The focus of this volume is to provide an analysis of Palaeolithic technologies from a quantitative, empirical perspective. As new techniques, particularly quantitative methods, for analyzing Palaeolithic technologies gain popularity, this work provides case studies particularly showcasing these new techniques. Employing diverse case studies, and utilizing multivariate approaches, morphometrics, model-based approaches, phylogenetics, cultural transmission studies, and experimentation, this volume provides insights from international contributors at the forefront of recent methodological advances.

Use-wear Analysis on Quartzite Flaked Tools by Antonella Pedergnana Pdf

Quartzite is a particularly frequently used lithology for knapping stone tools throughout all stages of human evolution. Despite this, however, there is a surprising lack of detailed methodological research on the formation and appearance of use-wear on this type of rock. As such, this book fills in a gap in the research, and proposes a new method to analyse use-wear on quartzite, by evaluating the variability of use-wear appearance on different rock varieties. This book is conceived as a handbook for the application of microwear analysis on quartzite, and is addressed to both students and lithic use-wear analysists. The extreme surface irregularities of quartzite, mainly due to its microcrystalline structure and the diverse orientation of quartz crystals surfaces, have always been regarded as a major obstacle when applying use-wear analysis. As shown here, the use of scanning electron microscopy allows this and other obstacles when observing highly reflective surfaces, such as quartzite, to be overcome.

The Oldowan by Kathy Diane Schick,Nicholas Patrick Toth Pdf

The earliest traces of proto-human technology emerged over 2.5 million years ago on the African continent. Called the Oldowan after the famous site of Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, these technologies herald a major evolutionary shift in the human lineage. The Oldowan: Case Studies into the Earliest Stone Age provides a critical look at early archaeological sites and their evidence. This volume also shows how a range of probing, multidisciplinary, experimental investigations - including experimental tool-making, comparative studies of ape technologies, biomechanical analysis, and PET studies of brain activity - help us evaluate this tantalizing prehistoric evidence and appreciate its relevance to human evolution.
