None Other Gods (Classic Reprint) by Robert Hugh Benson Pdf

Excerpt from None Other Gods To whom can I dedicate this book but to you who were, not only the best friend of the man I have written about, but one without whom the book could not have been written? It is to you that I owe practically all the materials necessary for the work it was to you that Frank left the greater part of his diary, such as it was (and I hope I have observed your instructions properly as regards the use I have made of it); it was you who took such trouble to identify the places he passed through; and it was you, above all, who gave me so keen an impression of Frank himself, that it seems to me I must myself have somehow known him intimately, in spite of the fact that we never met. None Other Gods by Robert Benson Pdf

The story is of the Honorable Frank Guiseley, second son of an English nobleman, and, in the first chapters, student at Cambridge. Frank has become a Catholic, and in consequence has been cast off by his father without even the proverbial shilling. He startles his friends by announcing an auction sale of his furniture, books, and clothes; later, armed with the resultant thirteen pounds and his exeat from Cambridge, he "takes to the roads" very literally and determinedly. To the remonstrances of his friend Jack Kirkby, Frank's reply is, "I'm going to find out things for myself."

None Other Gods by Robert Hugh Benson Pdf

These two young men were sitting in one of the most pleasant places in all the world in which to sit on a summer evening—in a ground-floor room looking out upon the Great Court of Trinity College, Cambridge. It was in that short space of time, between six and seven, during which the Great Court is largely deserted. The athletes and the dawdlers have not yet returned from field and river; and Fellows and other persons, young enough to know better, who think that a summer evening was created for the reading of books, have not yet emerged from their retreats. A white-aproned cook or two moves across the cobbled spaces with trays upon their heads; a tradesman's boy comes out of the corner entrance from the hostel; a cat or two stretches himself on the grass; but, for the rest, the court lies in broad sunshine; the shadows slope eastwards, and the fitful splash and trickle of the fountain asserts itself clearly above the gentle rumble of Trinity Street.

None Other Gods by Robert Hugh Benson Pdf

Frank Guiseley was a student at Cambridge when he decided to enter the priesthood. When he heard of that, his father disowned him, leaving without much more than the clothes on his back. Note even his best friend -- Jack Kirby -- could dissuade Frank from this madness. In the middle of the night, Frank left the confines of college and set off to join the clergy with only a handful of currency in his pocket. Lord Talgarth -- Frank's father -- wrote the letter to disown his son certain that it would cause his son to change his plans. Frank was supposed to have been devastated -- and returned a submissive letter stating that he would not join clergy. But that didn't happen, and Frank has run away. Lord Talgarth has grown ill with worry. Jenny Launton was Frank Guiseley's fiance. She seems unperturbed by Frank's decision and even tells her cousins that she has a plan. A clever and wonderful plan that will bring everything back together again and make everything right as rain. . . .Robert Hugh Benson AFSC KC*SG KGCHS (18 November 1871 - 19 October 1914) was an English Anglican priest who in 1903 was received into the Roman Catholic Church in which he was ordained priest in 1904.
